Despairing ‘Ten No’s Youth’ Emerge, Proclaiming China’s Last Generation’s Resignation to Lying Flat

- Young people in mainland China have been facing multiple challenges such as a continuous decline in the Chinese economy, high unemployment rates, and intense social competition. These issues have led to a phenomenon known as "lying flat" among young people. Last year, the term "Four Nos" was widely circulated in society, referring to young individuals who do not seek the four things: romantic relationships, marriage, homeownership, or parenthood. This year, this trend has evolved into "Ten Nos." The emergence of this new wave of "lying flat" has sparked widespread discussions.

admire this generation enormously. so creative and refused to be owned.
The 10 Nos are just an example of wanting only what you already have. These kids have very intelligently learned from the older generation that none of those things are within reach anyway. So stop wanting them. It's sort of modern, dark take on Buddhist philosophy. Suffering comes of wanting that which you can't have. So to exist without suffering one must want only what one already has. But even this is dangerous because what one has may change, may be lost. So not only should you want only what you have, but you cannot grow to attached to any of it because tomorrow it might be gone, and then you will suffer until you learned to not want it anymore. As you can see, the CCP hasn't killed off Buddhism at all.
There does seem to be some common elements with the Buddhist renunciation of the material world. And of course, there's nothing wrong with living by Buddhist principles. The practical problem is that if an entire society becomes monks and they all renounce the family and reproduction, then within a generation you have no society left. As it is, China doesn't have enough young adults left to stave off demographic catastrophe. This generation's demoralization is just going to make things even worse, from that perspective.
@@douglassun8456It's all thanks to the yellow bear, i am also like that, hard times often creates this kind of peoples.

@@douglassun8456 Very true. I want to emphasize I don't think this is some organic resurgence of Buddhism, I think it's just a uniquely Chinese cultural response to the lack of opportunity young people see around them. In the west, we have ghosttown subdivisions and removed all 3rd spaces, coupled with stranger danger mentality, that no one goes outside anymore.
And in China, you have a youth who can clearly see behind the curtain that there is no healthy future in an unhealthy society.
We have an older generation, through their hatred of nature, designed unnatural living spaces. Who now claim to care about the very environment they've destroyed over the years. Who now complain about young people not doing anything, yet designed these spaces so that young people have nothing to do.
The old have forgotten the youth. We can clearly see this today. They have forgotten their own youth. They have destroyed their own childhoods. And to then have the gall to complain about young people being lazy and uninitiated... the old turned the young people into old people!
This is what happens when the old abandon their youth. And who has to now pick up the pieces? Oh that's right... the youth.
I feel for the youth. Forced to grow up too fast in an unforgiving world where the essence of youth is on the brink of extinction. A shut in nation. This is the world of miserable old men, spreading their misery down the generations.
The previous generations ate it all up and left genZers the debt. I feel this in America too.
Every time I see my fellow working class in China I am proud. I wish we Americans were as forward thinking as the young Chinese. I have been followong the ten nos (and more) my entire adult life. It is our last act of rebellion: to spare our potential children the disgrace of working to make the upper class more wealthy.
I just abstained from breeding to spare the not yet created people the entire shit show that is post industrialist existence. Including being told to respect their elders, who have zero compassion or understanding of what they have inflicted on future generations.
This should be required viewing for anyone who seriously thinks that China is going through an ordinary recession and that the economy will eventually recover. This is a death spiral. With exports drying up, China needs consumer spending to fuel a recovery. But the young working-age adults who should help lead the way have basically sworn off spending. They're not waiting for better times; they've given up for good. Consumer spending is also driven by people starting families - and it looks like that ain't happening in China, either. This is not going to be a temporary slowdown; it's not even something comparable to the Great Depression in the US. This is a profound existential crisis.
Completely agree, I dont think people understand how extreme the situation in China is. Its not just a financial problem, they have an entire population that has gone into severe depression
The CCP refuses to stimulate consumer spending. They're communists after all, and people who want material things eventually want other, non-material things, like freedom. They made a conscious decision decades ago to build an investment-led economy instead of a consumption-led economy. Now that all that's left is a massive hangover from a debt-fueled malinvestment binge, everyone is tapped out, too much debt, no disposable income, so they don't even have the option of redirecting the economy toward consumption. Instead they are just making up economic data, completely fabricating it, and trying to fool foreign capital from the West into coming back into the country so that they get a few more years of investment led growth. But nobody with any sense will invest in China anymore. It's dangerous to even enter China these days as a Westerner. You are subject to arbitrary detention at any time. Even checking on your investments could be considered a risk to national security. Who needs that crap? So China is done economically, and we haven't even talked about the demographic nightmare they're facing. The entire system is going to crumble within the next 10 years and the only way out is to force a severe wartime austerity, invade Taiwan, and hope that they win and can hold the world hostage for massive concessions using the Taiwanese semiconductor industry. Not a problem If they seek not to consume 🦉
If Gen Z shows itself to be a generation of near zero expectations, they are winners in the farcical game, and well-played. Gen X applauds you for staying the course where we faltered. Bravo
So not buying things you don't need are frowned upon or creating additional expenses that you can't afford? If a basic level of living is unaffordable. How does it make sense for anything else?
The Capitalistic mindset is highly illogical. If you aren't feeding the machine something must be wrong with you. smh
Greed driven consumism is the basis of economy, the tree cannot exist without its roots.
Would anyone WANT to live in those buildings I am seeing too often in China? Those horrible apartment blocks not only look bad but are dangerous.
They live in cages basically.
theres no other options
If the US doesn't change course, we'll be going down a similar path.
I think so too. Our wages aren't keeping up with inflation, tuition and housing costs are too insane, job security is getting worse, retirement is becoming unattainable,...
As an American, I'm already trying to follow those no's too
I suspect it might be worse, I suspect that not only are we on a similar path as that of China, but that with growing of unruly masses that the government will start to look for something akin to a meat grinder to get rid of the mass of unemployed and unwanted people something like Vietnam on a larger scale and with the multiple war fronts opening up, that we may find ourselves, out of energy, gas, water, food, and shelter, weather that be from an economic collapse brought on by a self fulfilling prophecy of a doomed economy as people realize the money is only worth something if you believe it so, or due to more malignant reason that of the new digital economy, which ever way you look at it, the public youth, me included in Gen z are becoming demoralized, deincentivized and deinvested in society globally, we can see dark times ahead and can't stop the train, but dare not bring anyone else into this mess, and it shows in the 10nos of China, I can only hope that we'll find a way to make it out of this before things get too dire but I would prepare for the worst and look to leave the cities if possible as soon as possible, lest we begin to mirror the rat city experiments, all becoming the beautiful ones looking in the mirror"our phones" and grooming ourselves but we know the out come of the experiments, my only words to anyone who's reads this, do your best to find a way out and live, take care of yourself and your loved one and together we make it out of this one yet
Really good economy jib creation inflation coming down low unemployment now if we tax rich ban lying insurrectionist bribed Judges and ger bug money out of politics we will be set
Already there. Women are saying no to marriage and kids. Both sexes No to homeownership .
Hard to watch, but thank you for bringing this to light.
System must be chneged all over this planet is the same.
All I can think of now is that scene from Spiderman where the Green Goblin is like "You know, we're not so different, you and I." But it's just American gen Z to Chinese gen Z
Can relate and mirror their principles almost exactly, though I’m British and the generation above...
The government manipulated the society until we reached this level.
The Chinese government doesn't care about them. The previous generation has been abandoned and they never earned their keep but continuously struggled the rest of their life. As for the 90s generation, I don't know exactly.
This is depressing as fuck. Humans are social creatures and require love and friendship to be emotionally stable. A lot of these people will self delete or have a despair induced heart attack in their 40's. I don't understand how some see this as positive.
Marching to their dystopian society. ..congratulations China.
Be wary of those who want to follow China's model.
Yup! America will choose a fork this year for sure. @@theguybehindyou4762
Meanwhile Schwab keeps praising the CCP. The world is next.
Look around you... anything familiar, yet?
Don’t worry, the West isn’t too far behind lol
What's the point of having a family and a partner if you can't afford it? It doesn't make sense from a survival point of view. Right now, I'm struggling to make ends meet with my current job within the school district. It's tough out there and I can barely afford food let alone bills that I need to have a roof over my head. That's one of the root reason why I'm probably going to stay single until I grow old and not have a family. It's part of preservation and survival skills.
Get a real job and I'll give a shit.
"We just stopped counting the unemployed. Bam, 100% employment!"
I see a lot of this reflected in the US. Lack of opportunities; upward mobility. Those with connections...and everybody else.
Why in the name of everything near and dear would the hospital MAKE THE FATHER REMOVE THE TUBE!?!?!?
Fear he'd sue them for malpractice resulting in the death of their child. China has an even more frivolous lawsuit culture than the US, as hard as that might be to believe.
I cant get over the "no helping elderly people whp fall" rule, that's wild
That means "no respect for the elderly"
This may also be related to the very common scam tactic called "touching porcelain" where the person on the floor fakes it and then grabs as the perpetrator the person who reaches out to help them up to swindle out "medical fees".
@@aelfher woah that's wild, never heard of that but i dont doubt it at all. Desperate times we're in these days
@@cassaspell serpentza had a pretty comprehensive short episode about it last year
Yeah. I don't think that's true however I do believe not holding doors open should be illegal😂
I don’t blame them for not getting married. It’s too much trouble. Too stressful. It’s easier and much better to be free and single. Like me! 😎👍👍
Maybe they just didn't "work hard enough" and thats why they are in the position they are in. /s We all know what this is about. Its a reflection of the 1% in the US who fucking take EVERYTHING. View their employees as a pure cost and its gotten to such an extreme that people of all ages are suffering for it. The amount of people I've met who've carried a 4 yr degree with a few years of experience being offered the low teens in wages per hour is horrifying. Lets be honest, as far the US goes, companies said "Fuck you." when they began deleting pensions back in the 60s and 70s. Productivity has sky rocketed and the only mfers who primarily benefited were the ones who owned all the businesses.
The defined benefit pension is a stupid risk for any company to take
@@timthetiny7538 And thats why you have people hopping ship.
@@timthetiny7538 Also, wouldn't be such a huge deal with companies paid their lower ends enough to actually invest in retirement.
(F off, CZcams). I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to feed a system that is rigged against them.
The child calling out to his dad to help him as he layed dying due to being taken off of the breathing machine is tearing me up. I had to stop the video because I was in tears.
Yet, here someone thats rich can mobilize all the help in the world. It angers me even as someone that isn't Chinese.
Be mad a God then
That’s life. Cold as fck!
The system is working as designed, not as intended.
Such trend that pursues minimalist lifestyle or "lying flat" is not new in long Chinese history. It reminds me of Toasim (道敎) or Qingtan (清談) ideology by Seven Worthies of the Bamboo Grove, (竹林七賢). They emphasize simple lifestyle with minimal materialistic consumption and minimal greed to sustain life. They regard highly of peace of mind, natural/organic lifestyle, longevity, universal balance and harmony. They despise material wealth and competition, fight, greed, worldly fame or high social achievement. They avoid social relationships and distance themselves from worldly matters. It is exactly the opposite of the lifestyle of Capitalism. Such trends generally go popular when the Chinese society and life become harsh and disarray during political turmoil or war.
TAOISM
But that time people still wanted to build a family, marry and have children?
Thanks for your view. It greatly helped me too, giving me a harmonious peaceful mindset.
Everything has come full circle then. The commies tried to destroy traditional Chinese culture with the 10 years of misery, also known as the cultural revolution.. slowly the regime has been using Chinese nationalism as a method of control.. but Chinese nationalism leads back to the spirit of the people.. that of traditionalism, minimalism, spiritualism and freedom.
The yangze and yellow river cannot flow backwards!
To be fair, we haven't had true capitalism since the Wilson administration. Just socialism lite.
It's almost as if consistent issues have similar results.
What choice do they have and nobody’s giving them jobs?
Demographics
There are no young people
One child policy
No children- no people
Also just because you encourage people to have children doesn’t mean they will have children. See: social encouragement in Nordic countries. Has not improved birth rates.
They let a little boy die 😢
For a long time it striked me that the multiple layers of power that be evolve in line with their spiritual beliefs, their way of seeing life, people, death, nature. The more harsh conditions of survival bringing out some of the worst tendencies, the most gracious overcomes producing the best and most precious lessons, and so on. I think the Chinese leaders don't care about their people, it almost always was that way, through the entire history of this country. To them, life seems entirely disposable, as long as they gain more and more power and influence. The Chinese people are under such pressure. I don't think things will get better anytime soon. Such a shame. Such a waste.
It's not just the chinese ”leaders” who do that. It's ALL OF THEM.
"If the land that I've owned and harvested haven't results any grown crops, then its time to move out and find a better pasture for better harvesting..." - Myself
If my own nation treated my life mercilessly, then it's time pack my things and move out from my own cursed country...
With no job ....
No money ....
No food ....
And no hope for the future ...
Why would you even think about dating ,martiage and kids ...?
When every day your trying not to starve to death ....?
Here in the USA if you're on Medicaid you can forget it
It looks like America from the outside looking in
As an Indian struggling to find a job ....I can very well relate to this 😅
I'm an outlier!
A GenXer that already's doing the 10 Nos.
Stopped donating blood in the 90s, never married no kids, no relationship...
The only Nos I didn't keep was owning a car and home ownership-only because a got a foreclosure house below market value though.
Way, way below market value.
I don't blame them!
I saw too many people working themselves to death, and dying too young.
Still seeing it now, only because the economy's gotten bad and people lost their jobs, are thy not killing themselves with work, but now the stress of being broke is killing them in a different premature way.
If you win you lose,
snd if you lose you lose.
Dang, this is depressing. It's awful to have no hope in life, and it sounds like it's only going to get worse for Chinese young people. I hope they are able to find joy and meaning in God when they can't anywhere else.
The more the industries computerize and automate, the more work employees are required to do. Some groups are not getting their fair share.
CCP’s social engineering results - their latest generation have decided to be their last. Wow😮! Not to mention, their home-made pandemic is making sure of that! It’s burning the candle from both ends.
CCP’s economic data. China GDP grew by 5.2% this year, and by 2050, if there are any Chinese citizens left, they should have a GDP of $58 trillion as the best economy in the world.
China reports for the first time (2022), their population has dropped from the supposed 1.4 billion. How do you even get to that population when in 1980 at only 1-billion population, when they started the One-Child-Policy? They already had the equivalent of a Fertility Rate of 1, with 2.1 as replacement level (more than 40 years ago).
Lots and lots of young men refusing to cooperate…. You really think their military gear is coincidental? It’s an early warning.
Punk movement.
of what, these men joining the military? you think theyll fight and die for a society theyre protesting against?
I'm in the US but it's similar. The Boomers took a lot of shit in the workplace, but they relieved themselves by passing it to the next person. Gen X and millennials saw things more clearly but kept working anyway. Gen Z just isn't doing much at all.
A family is for the affluent, not working poor.
So actually the Chinese economy features one thing similar to the US: there are plenty of jobs available, but almost none that pay enough to live on with any kind of comfort (13:40).
Not quite.
Ironic seeing Nietzche as a prophet more than one century after his death.
This is not a Chinese problem. This is world wide. Generation Z will change the world.
Did i hear that right. A 4000 yuan a month salary? That's ridiculous. I haven't been to China in 14 years, but i remember getting paid 4000 after the free apartment.
I know my experience doesn't necessarily compare, but 4000 is low. I couldn't have lived on 4000 without that apartment. I can only imagine how much weaker 4000 is now.
Seems like most advanced societies are headed in this direction.
Ngl those green militia coats are actually so fire
