Why BERRY GORDY HID the JACKSON 5 from the PUBLIC? [Season 1 Episode 4]

We have definitely been cheated out of one the deepest and most unbelievable bits of pop music lore. They gave us a tale of the brother boy band chanced upon by the superstar fairy princess goddess queen. All due respect to Diana Ross, but the true story of the Jackson Five's quest for fire is a banger.
For the life of me I can't imagine why Berry went with the Diana Ross one. I know they were deep in the throws of a messy affair. Maybe its something like he was gifting her this badass boy band. She was in the middle of excising herself from the Supremes and becoming the iconic EGOT aspirant we know she became. Motown was actually moving operations to Los Angeles right around the same time. Berry Gordy's future vision for Motown had Diana Ross placed smack dab in the center of everything.
I think the idea that the Jackson 5 was rubbing shoulders with the Chi-lites, Sam & Dave, Etta James and Smokey Robinson by night then rushing home just in time for breakfast and grammar school has a kind of vigilante appeal to it. Its almost like they were consummate performers by night and mild mannered school boys by day. They pressed their case to more record labels than I had known. Stax Volt had a shot at them so did RCA Victor. Motown at least 3 acts and 2 office staff go back to Hitsville with the same story. "Some kid in the midwest is the second coming of the great one's!"
The Jackson 5 were known and they were known to be fantastic performers. The problem is that Michael was 5 or 6 when they began their midwest movements. Most of the power players pointed to his age in particular. He was good, maybe even great. But what happens to my investment when his voice changes in 2 or 3 years? What happens when his looks change? Those questions were enough to keep the Jacksons and their father Joseph riding back and forth in that Volkswagen microbus.
Motown was their proper home. Motown had an infrastructure in place for the Jackson 5 to thrive right from the start. Berry's plan was slick. It was probably the very first insider plant model in R&B. Yes, Michael and his brothers had legit talent. That is a fact that can't be questioned. However, Berry Gordy was in control. Berry Gordy was determined to turn the Jackson 5 into action figures, Saturday morning cartoons, mainstays on the variety shows of the day. That's why you can google American Bandstand, the Ed Sullivan Show, Hollywood Palace, the Flip Wilson Show, Top of the Pops, Soul Train, Solid Gold, every Diana Ross Special and you will see the classic Jackson 5 performances. You'll seen Michael Jackson's national TV debut on the Miss Black America Pageant too. Multiple Carol Burnett Shows as well. Michael Jackson debuts his version of the robot on Soul Train. As you would expect...it's all electrifying.
This was Michael Jackson's education. He learned at the earliest age that the entertainer must entertain. If you wanted to know if you were good, the numbers are always the way to measure yourself.
In this exploration of Michael and the Jackson family, this period is crucial. This period is where Michael Jackson picked up his competitiveness. Michael Jackson didn't know it, but as he joined the Motown roster he was also saving an American institution. Motown was looking at an uncertain future. Diana Ross had left the Supremes, the Temptations were dealing with substance abuse issues among their soloists, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye were unfulfilled as artists and had been pressing Berry Gordy for artistic freedom. Motown was built on a cookie cutter assembly line formula where his team of writers wrote hits. Just the hits. Motown wasn't built for experimentation. So as the marquis changed from the Supremes, temptations and Four Tops to Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and the Jackson Five, Berry focused the writers on hits for his commercial product teen band. The Jackson 5's first years were a period of great success. This was also when they were most exploited as corporate products. Hard to tell if one outweighed the other. Sinnik22's The Thriller effect is doing the research and UNCOVERING every drop of information that we find. Cuz this was no fairy tale.

You're right! Joe knew how talented his sons were! That's why he was relentless in making sure they would get a chance to show how great they were! If it hadn't been the mayor of Detroit, Gladys Knight or Diana Ross, it would have been someone else, but rest assured that man wasn't going to stop! He knew what his boys had!

The cover story on the back was my time finding out the names of the Jackson Five, their ages, and where they were from. Jermaine’s name was spelled ‘Germaine’ on the initial copies of the album. I must’ve read that thing and looked at those two photos on the back about a million times. For a long time that was all the information we could find on the group.

hmmmm..Bobby Taylors story is much different than this..He said he called Berry Gordy in Cali..They taped it because Gordy wasn't there at all.

I knew Mr. Taylor's name from his group Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers, my parents had. his album. I grew older we found out he living our hometown in Columbus, Ohio when was he wad working with talent here. We were lucky to get to meet him and heard ALL of the Motown stories, especially the stories of The Jackson 5!!!! Oh yeah Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong was his guitarist in The Vancouvers.
Johnny Jackson was my cousin and he was murdered in 2006 by his girlfriend who stabbed him with a knife and fun fact janet Jackson paid for his funeral

I'm from Gary, IN. and grew up only a few blocks away from 2300 Jackson St., and was in elementary school during this period, and I can say what you've present on this video is very accurate. However, I do recall a guy named Marcus Fairchild who was gay, and the rumors on the street at that time was that he worked with the Jackson Five either as a manager or dance coordinator.

It wasn't' the Studio house they were auditioning in. In the early 70's Motown moved to a much bigger building downtown Detroit (that's where the audition was held), before they completely moved to LA. That building was vacant for years and has since been torn down to make room for the now existing Little Caesars Arena.
You may be right but both Michael and Jermaine describe pulling up to the hitsville building and their impressions were that it was less impressive than they expected. They were young, but I went with their recollection. Also their audition was July 1968. They’d been signed by 70. Thank you for watching.

This is first time listening The Thriller Effect 03/30/24
They were a family act basically playing cover music but deep down it was more or less a hobby thing but their father was ambitious and he had conspired with some leaders of industry to put his sons out there . The boys were good but I'm sure if they had a choice they would rather the music thing be a hobby rather than a career.
People also had to remember they were signed already with stealtown before Motown. They already had a,local hit with Big boy which is one of my favorite oldies

Back then the Jackson’s despite their ages toured the same venues then known as the Chitlin Circuit . Yes they performed in stages and saw the Joe Simon’s,but also Jane’s Brown,Jackie Wilson,Gladys Knight and the Pips,Etta James and many more. Etta in a book described a very young Michael aways standing down stage watching her every move to the point it unnerved her and she would say scat and come back,would leave then come back again . Once backstage Joe got him to apologize and Michael told her he watched her because she was so good . She gave him pointers and yes most fans know this story and other from other entertainers who said he watched everything when not performing himself,From Micheal ,Watch the best and become greater. After his death at a black awards show who was honoring him in between breaks with artist giving their memories of him. Eddie Levert and Walter remembered seeing him taking him to get ice cream he did not want saying his throat was sore . Again they were well groomed,worked stages with the greats holding their own to the point most thought Micheal was a little person . All this was before Motown and even Berry Gordy almost gave a past on them if not for Bobby Taylor ,the audition as Berry wanted no more kids acts after Stevie. They came with many laws child stars in entertainment come with from how long they could work to having tutors and more.
