- Michael Jackson is often seen as the standout talent in the Jackson 5. However, before he took the mic stand his older brother Jermaine was the original lead singer for the group, and later acted as a complimentary vocalist on all the Jackson 5's early hits.
The brothers were pitted against each other by the press as they developed solo careers outside of the family group. A rivalry that only grew once Michael left Motown with the rest of his family. Jermaine's attempted to forge his own path, to create a name for himself. Which became more and more difficult as his brother's career continued to skyrocket to new and unimaginable heights.
In this series of videos, we uncover the complicated stardoms, musical rivalries and family dynamics of Michael and Jermaine Jackson.

Michael Jackson was clearly the superstar of the family since the beginning.
Facts
True we all knew it even if they don't wanna way it
Just him and Janet are the truly talented 🤷🏻♀️
Um no it was Jermaine he was lead first til marlon and Michael joined in 65-66. Joseph only wanted to see Jackie Tito and Jermaine sing he thought marlon and Michael were too little
@@Liltopda225 The point is Michael was simply too talented for him not to be the biggest star.
At the end of the day, Jermaine and Michael did love each other.
Jermaine was a talented guy in his own right. He had a good voice and was a good bass player, but it was clear that Michael had something special.
Imagine starting a family music group because one of your kids broke your instrument.
We would never know the talent of Michael Jackson, if his brother Tito was more careful with that guitar!

Michael didn't have to fight for the spotlight he was the spotlight!!!!!
That Michael enjoyed the company of his brothers on stage with him is something you could even see at all of his solo tours. With sooo many songs, especially the ones he did with the jackson 5 and the jacksons earlier, he always had 4 dancers behind him, mimicking pretty much what his brothers used to do.
he was also much more relaxed and playful when touring with his brothers, victory tour shows this
@@erenyeeagah204 I don't agree that he was much more relaxed when he toured with them, especially not the victory tour. Their rivalry intensified and got too heated at that point and they traveled separately. It was a whole mess and almost ruined the tour. Michael became much more relaxed when he went solo and had full control
@@for-house-stark that was after thriller this whole video documents when they were still the real jackson 5

At the end of the day you could tell the Jackson siblings loved each other, but fame and fortune can significantly damage family bonds.

I often wonder what he would think of the music industry of today and what his new music would have sounded like. I guess he would have been something like Madonna today.
@@malbrojay4740 It’s pretty challenging for older acts to release new material which turn out to be hits. Their fans tend to prefer their older material. He would have done very well performing his “oldies” in a Vegas residency or overseas.

Michael Jackson wasn't only the biggest Superstar in the Jackson Family. Michael Jackson was the biggest Entertainer in History💯
Even his idol James Brown was amazed at Michaels talent especially after doing the Moonwalk
The truth.
Jackie also had a self titled solo album in 1973. So technically 3 brothers had solo careers during Motown. The song “Is it him or me?” Was sampled by A Tribe Called Quest
Marlon had a solo album too and Randy started his own band randy and the gypsys but this is about which brothers had the biggest most successful solo careers and it was only Jermaine and Michael
Wow
@@kareemeverison actually @Lamb over Rice is correct. This first part of the mini-series is talking about their Motown years in the 70s and Michael, Jermaine, and Jackie all had solo albums while on the label so it was three brothers at the time, not two, that had solo albums while still being members of The Jackson 5.
@@kareemeverison True but The Video is talking about the Motown years. Eventually every sibling released a solo project. But During Motown Jermaine had two solo, Michael had 4 & Jackie had 1.

Jermaine was a talented individual, I remember his solo career. He had some really decent hits, your in good hand, let’s get serious, let’s be young tonight. He was a force for sure, but Michael had a dedication to his craft like no other. He was determined to be great and he was!

Siblings fight. But they all loved eachother
We all do!
I really like Jermaine, he's a great singer and bass player. He had a few hits like "Daddy's Home" and "Let's Get Serious", but he still deserved more success in his solo career. Not even the partnership with Whitney Houston was enough to leverage his career once and for all, a pity.

Imo, Randy is more talented than Jermaine Jackson.
whitney wasn’t famous yet when she was on his album, I believe it was her first record appearance ever. Plus, Jermaine still had a good solo career years after up until he tried to diss Michael on Word 2 the Badd.
Don't take it personal is his dopest track.
The brothers are all wonderful and have talent but MJ is the King!👑✨💕No one could and can do it like Michael. He was truly gifted!🌟💎MJ Forever❤️🔥
Michael was in a class of his own. Jermaine is a good singer & it stops there with him. Michael on the other hand had the total package plus more. His light was just to bright to share the stage with his brothers🤷🏻♂️
It’s ridiculous to compare Mike and Jermaine. They were 2 totally different men, with 2 totally different talents. Some people just have a gift. Michael was one word: special. I personally prefer the vocal tag team of Michael and Jermaine. Jermaine staying at Motown was his downfall. It would’ve been cool to see him at CBS with the rest of the brothers.
Agree he would have made more money and it would have boosted his career more cause they had more control, and Mike would not have always been lead singer
@@aharonbenyisrael8387 No offense, but in my opinion, there was no reason for Jermaine to stay at Motown as a solo artist. He was not that type of singer. Had he never married Hazel Gordy i think he would’ve left with the brothers. Even Hazel wanted him to go with his brothers. Til this day Jermaine still says he stayed cuz he felt he owed Motown and wanted to be loyal. Michael basically had to sing EVERYTHING when they went to CBS with occasional vocals from Jackie.
I can't help to wonder if Michael would have made the career he did if Jermaine had followed the brothers at CBS. Perhaps this "breaking up" is what helped Michael "grow up" or let's say "gain in maturity" and take his flight towards the mythical superstar he became. I guess we will never know and can only speculate, but it's interesting to wonder. ;)
Michael had an ANOINTING on his life! That’s the difference here! He has a calling! 🔥🔥
Has? Not had?
Their afros were on point🤗
They all was gifted but Michael worked the hardest. Mike kept elevating, learning and pruning his skills until ultra pristine mastery.
Although Diana Ross generally gets the credit for “discovering” the Jackson 5 back in 1969, it was actually soulful singer Gladys Knight who first brought the brothers from Gary, Indiana, to the attention of Motown hit-maker Berry Gordy.
Randy originally joined the group in 1971. Also prior to Motown 25, Jermaine appeared on The Midnight Special with his brothers in 1979.
Once you put Michael on lead you couldn't go back it was clear he was the star even Jermaine knew that
MJ was just *different* 💯 Those "chosen one" type of people happen every once in a while. Jermaine had his share of hits👍 But there's only one "chosen one" per family, and Mike was IT for the Jacksons.
“Do What You Do” is my jam and I love that video with Imán😊
Thank you for telling the truth about this normal sibling rivalry !! Those guys loved each other . I can totally relate to Jermaine’s feelings about Michael . He was only concerned and rightfully so about the people MJWas surrounding himself with . I read Jermaine’s book and it was soooo interesting and enlightening about their family dynamic . I also understand MJS dilemma also as I have a son in the business and sometimes the business can be so demanding he may not always pick up or answer my calls , not because he doesn’t love me or want to talk . Just because the business is so frickin time consuming . Ultimately Mike and Jermaine loved each other and were very close .
Yes Jermaine has stood hard by him❤
you can't convince me jermaine didn't resent michael for having the career he thought he deserved
Jermaine once said that he should've been the King of Pop and not Michael.
@@DTownNash lmao he wishes😅🤣
Yaaa it’s prolly true but I think that’s normal. In any group/band, there have to be members in it that feel had they been promoted the way the lead singer was, they’d have a good solo career. Latoya Luckett or Kelly Rowland were just as beautiful n talented as Beyoncé, she just wasn’t promoted as the lead singer. JC Chasez was a better singer than Justin Timberlake but he wasn’t promoted as the lead singer. For any bandmate to have those thoughts is normal.
I’m sure JJ resented MJ at times but don’t think that MJ was always this innocent angel either. When it comes to Michael or the family in general, it is JERMAINE (not Jackie/Rebbie/LaToya) that is defending him since the mid 80s.
In the last child molestation trial it was reported in case MJ would be found guilty, Jermaine had a secret arrangement to fly him out of the country to whatever country thst USA couldn’t extract MJ from. Larry King asked Jermaine, if that happened, wouldn’t U have gone to jail & Jermaine said yes.
I respect any man who fights for his family even if they aren’t always getting along.

MJ is a couple of yrs older than I am, but when my little friends crushed on MJ, I was in love 😻 with Jermaine!
I still love listening to Jermaine sing “I found That Girl.” 🥰
Jermaine is extremely talented in singing well and playing bass at the same time, however, Michael was a once in all lifetimes talent. The group Hanson had a similar issue where the record deal was signed based on one brother as lead singer and another brother took over and did all their hits. The BeeGees had a similar dynamic. I'm not criticizing the excellent video, I am pointing out that sibling drama is an issue in sibling groups
Yea its so normal in families
Jermaine loved his little brother, and his family’s Legacy to this very day.

Taylor fronted the band Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers. At a 1968 concert in Chicago, a family group called The Jackson 5 were their opening act. Impressed by the group, Taylor arranged for The Jackson 5 to audition for Berry Gordy and other executives at Motown.
You guys always get this wrong, who he called was Suzanne and she saw them at Bobby house and she talked with berry to come and see them and to let them audition for Motown

I love Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin' but Michael outsang Jermaine on his own song ngl. I do like Lets Get Serious, but Michael's voice is still my favorite, then Jackie's and Marlon's. Fun fact, my cousin on my mom's side is Tom Bradley, and he knew the family. @@princesskristan Yess all the Time no questions
Jermaine is a fine singer, some say underrated. The truth is that he did not have enough talent, charisma and acting like Michael to face great artists of that time, such as Prince, Madonna, Whitney Houston, George Michael, Freddie Mercury and company. Randy, for example, plays multiple instruments and his voice is underrated, also his older sister, Rebbie Jackson, is a better singer than Janet and Latoya.
No, Jermaine had enough talent. What he didn't have was the same level of ambition and intense commitment that MJ and Janet had. MJ was by far the most ambitious popstar ever. He burned with very intense universal aspirations of success. MJ seriously aspired to become as big as he eventually became. Jermaine didn't have this. He had the talent. But talent is never enough. Also, MJ understood very early on that the music industry was a business, so he approached it like one, and made very intelligent and strategic power moves to secure his goals for super stardom. He wanted a black musician to become as big as the biggest white artists that ever existed and he was angry about the fact that the racist segregation in the industry never allowed any black artist before him to become mainstream global acts. So he deliberately planned to overcome this. This gave him a very powerful sense of purpose that Jermaine simply never had
@@for-house-stark I never said that I had no talent. On the contrary, I stressed that he was a good singer. But do you seriously think he had the talent to take on the big shots of music at the time? Do you see Jermaine competing with Freddie Mercury, Prince, Tina Tuner or George Michael? The truth is that the competition was very close and in the eighties and nineties what there was most was talent, therefore it was more difficult to stand out, to succeed as an artist. You had to be different, have something beyond just being a good singer or just playing instruments. Surely there are hundreds of bands and artists who had the same ambition as Michael, but did not achieve success. Also, Jermaine did have intentions of going solo, but you have a valid point, Michael aspired to be the greatest black artist in history and he achieve it.
@@robertj.batista listen, many successful people don't even have that much talent. They had something else which always proves to be more effective and more important than talent. That is relentless determination. That is what Jermaine lacked. Think about Madonna. She could barely sing and she doesn't ever show up on ANY greatest singers list. She danced but she wasn't the best at that either and doesn't show up on any greatest dancers lists either. She could put on a great show with great production. But she never had any standout talent. What she had was relentless determination just like MJ. She came from humble beginnings, people underestimated her and most artists felt she would never have any longevity in the industry because it was obvious she wasnt a spectacular singer or musician or talent. Despite all this, she proved em all wrong and went on to become the biggest female popstar ever and the biggest selling female artist in history. Yet Jermaine was a far better singer and musician than she was. Talent is overrated. Without unwavering focus and determination, talent never amounts to much.
@@for-house-stark Out of all the examples of artists I mentioned, you chose the least talented one to prove your point. And well, the mistake was mine for mentioning it. Jermaine is a better singer than her, obviously. Sometimes ambition, determination is not enough to achieve success. As I was saying, there are artists and bands that were so underestimated that they didn't achieve success precisely because of the excess talent that was available at that time. Madonna, of all the great artists I told you about, she is an exception. In addition, people with less talent today are succeeding in music, since there are artists with little singing ability, who barely dance, others who can't play any instrument, all this happens because the big record companies are no longer looking for people With talent, there are many ways to make the final product, that is, the music, sound good thanks to the high level of production that we currently have. In Michael's time, there was too much talent and unfortunately, no matter how determined and talented you were, not everyone achieved greatness, it's a fact of life. Keep in mind one other thing, the way music was consumed in the '80s and '90s was very different. Not everyone could afford to buy every album by Michael, Prince, Queen, George Michael and company. People at that time had to carefully choose their favorite artists, and they always chose the most extraordinary and talented ones. I'm not saying it's a decisive factor, but it influences. Jermaine was talented, and he may not have the same amount of ambition that Michael did, the fact is that the magnitude of artists or talent out there at the time would have made it more difficult for him to achieve success if he did have the ambition.
@@robertj.batista I agree that back in the 80s and 90s, there was excess talent. So I take into consideration that the competition in the industry would make it extremely difficult for one to standout and compete with the giants of the market. Would Jermaine stand a chance? Yes, there's always a chance. Even if its a very little one. His own style may not have been particularly outstanding, but if his own sister, Janet, could succeed to the level she did, then so could Jermaine. She too, like Madonna, was no exceptional singer. She just worked with the right people who could produce great music and great videos, and she could perform like Madonna too and dance. She worked hard, and she's a woman. She never attained the same stratospheric, unimaginable levels of commercial success MJ had, but her career completely overshadows Jermaines regardless and nobody saw her coming. She was the 3rd most successful female artist of the 90s on the bbh100 charts. Jermaine could've achieved that much, commercial sales aside. He could've at least had great hits if he partnered with the likes of Jimmy jam & Terry Lewis like Janet did. Man, even milli vanilli had hits too before their careers tanked lmao. Jermaine was no exceptional force, but I still think he could have been on Janet's level at least. Maybe I'm wrong

Yeah
Jacko was a shit racist and abuser
He manipulate children
Jackie had a 70’s solo album as well
Part 2 please... I need the tea spilled about the pettiness between them in the 80s and 90s... That's some real juice
Marlon also had a degree of success. #2 R&B single from his solo album. The contract between Motown and the J5 was signed two days before Marlon's 12th birthday. March 10th 1969. 7 year agreement. Which was broken by the J5 in '75.
I want a part 2
