  • How many female master painters can you name from history? If you said less than a handful, you're not alone. In fact, there were a multitude of women who achieved artistic brilliance and professional success since the early 1500s. In this video, professional artist Jill Poyerd guides the viewer through the lives of some of the most successful women painters prior to the Second World War, touching on their struggles, the limits they pushed, and how they lined up with some of the most famous masters in history.
    NOTE: Angelica Kauffman was a Swiss-born artist. Generally speaking, her painting life could be spit into thirds as far as residency: She lived approximately 1/3 of her life in Switzerland, 1/3 in England, and then 1/3 in Rome. The height of her career was while living in London, England.

      Juan Carlos martinez They’re not though, as Jill said at the beginning, ask the general population to name female masters and they would be able to only name one or two on average - however they would be able to name many more male masters. These female masters need bringing to the fore so they become household names like Van Gogh, Sargant, Da Vinci etc....

    An inspiring, well-produced documentary on female artists and their works. The array of women who succeeded in art-making is wonderful to behold and important to the history of art. Given the fact that through time men have intentionally been represented as the only sex who can and should produce art--an enormous tragedy for women to be caught in. And yet, obviously as we see here, women would not be held back from their love of being creative and their mastery of painting. Thanks to Ms. Poyerd, we have a delightful presentation of women's art through history that will hopefully serve to inspire today's women who want to produce their own art.

    A few years ago, I bought a book that centered on women painters. It was truly an eye-opener for me. Many of the works shown in the book rivaled... even surpassed those of some notable male masters! When I was studying Fine Art in college, there wasn't much mentioned with regard to female artists. It's only recently that we've begun to discover works by Vermeer and other male artists. Well, it's only natural (and just) that we should include the extraordinary masterpieces of these ladies as well. It's long overdue, folks!

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  Před 5 lety

      You're correct, and I'm sorry now that I don't have her down as a Swiss-born artist. I'll see if I can tweak the voice-over on CZcams. I listed her as an English artist because it was in London where she (according to my research) was at the pinnacle of her career. Her life seems to have been split almost into thirds - 1/3 in Switzerland, a few years traveling with her father, almost 1/3 in England, and then 1/3 in Rome. She continues to have work in the Academy catalog in England until 1797. So basically, I felt her peak was in England and since her timeline is so divided, it was safe to list as that. However...as I said, I'll see if I can tweak it. I can't reload the video from scratch, unfortunately.

    Also interesting that despite the many artists mentioned in the video, there are many left out who are equally skilled, e.g. Kathe Kollwitz, Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell, Lee Krasner, Ruth Hartigen, Elaine DeKooning (just off the top of my head).

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  Před 5 lety +4

      Absolutely. You wouldn't believe how many I had to leave out, and that's without counting those after the 1940s. No matter what video I do, there are always some greats that get left out due to space, story, or goals for the project. It's tough.

    Thank you so much for these excellent videos in your channel, especially for this one on women artists. As the mother of an artistically-inclined daughter, I am so grateful to be able to inspire and encourage her by the examples of these exceptional women artists. I am an aspiring artist myself and this video made my eyes glisten. I will do further research on these artists. Thank you so much for this wonderful discovery. Your contribution to this field is awe-inspiring.🙏

    Just another BRILLIANT video from a modern day master! Thank you for this wonderful video, Jill! Both my parents were outstanding artists, but my dad always got the recognition so this video is very close to my heart.

    Excellent examination of some of the many women artists through history. Fascinating to hear how financially successful some artists were (and also amazing to hear how many children many of them had!) Many thanks for this fine, inspiring, work.

    Thank u so much for this. It just feels amazing to know that there is an entire lineage of art created by the female gaze. I knew of only a few of these our ancestors: Gentilechi, Cassat, Morrisot, O'Keefe, Kahlo, Shergill. Thanks for introducing me to this suppressed amd ignored history. Will look into all their works individually - a whole new world to explore.
    Thanks a ton 💞

      fascinated by Rosa Bonheur. Very unique niche in terms of subject matter - the animal body, that too farm-land animals. And how wonderfully she creates the illusion of the bulk and weight of these big, heavy beasts - even in the paintings in which the animals are static u get the sense of the mass and chunky-ness of the muscles and flesh of the animals, and u know, one kick from this heavy beast will set u flying, so don't mess with cows and horses and oxen. And in "plowing in the nivernais" u get the sense of the immense labour, and the difficulty of of churning the land and the power of the sinews that has to be exercised to get the plough going.
      Brilliant.

    This is great, Jill, on par with your other videos. I'm grateful to have exposure to so many new realist painters. I'm also pleasantly surprised that many of these women enjoyed success and patronage in their lifetimes. I guess I assumed that the sales revenue would have been swept up by fathers or husbands or institutions. So, it's a bit ironic that the self-supporting, successful and contemporaneously popular ones later disappeared from history.
    I also appreciate your comment about talent; many people want to believe in a kind of equity these days, but let's face it: these artists were talented in addition to being determined.

      That's something I hadn't thought of, Andrew - that the money could have been taken up by a male relative; probably true and probably happened to some. I did enjoy reading about those men who supported and encouraged the women/artists in their lives instead. Thank you for your kind and interesting comments.

    Thank you, I particularly liked what was shown of Artemesia Gentileschi. Really sad that what she went through in the 1600s doesnt go all that differently in our modern legal system. Hope her story is heard and beautiful art appreciated more.
