One of my favourite artists of the 19th century is Rosa Bonheur. Her depictions of farming life (and specifically cows) are so realistic, and the fact that she doesn't get more recognition than the other Realists of the time, such as Gustave Courbet, Jean-Francois Millet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (also notice the recurring theme of *men* ) really baffles me.
Did you know, Nancy, that when your grandmother started to paint she was advised not to sign her pictures with her first name, but to only use her first initial as there was (is?) prejudice against women artists? That was in the early 70's.
Having gone to art school and fascinated by art history, not only were women artists ignored but every was focused on the italian renaissance. Northern renaissance,byzantine and medieval art was seen as just an inferior stepping stone….islamic art was totally ignored and all asian art except Japanese prints
is 27 too late to start learning to draw and paint? I have always loved art and longed to turn my thoughts feelings and experiences into art, but I'm honestly terrible at it!

I have heard that a communist came up with "international women's day", and thus, I would say that February fourteenth, all hearts day, is a better day to tell of women artists.
