    Mazda reminds me of my AOL chatroom days, i'm just not sure if I believe what this stranger is telling me about themselves. Should we be trusting them that they're truly a beautiful designed, rotary powered, next generation sports car? Or are they just another crusty, potato looking company that's sending another SUV off the line? Well, i'm not sure but with all the news around Mazda launching Spirit Racing, their recent Rotary powered sports car prototype, and their continued love for prototypes, I figured it was time we weigh in on why I have trust issues with Mazda.

    I have a 22 Mazda3 AWD Turbo and aside from it not being manual, they did it right. 250hp and 320tq from the factory. Tunes and aftermarket parts have already pushed this platform past 350hp and 450tq to the wheels in a jelly bean. Hopefully we continue to see aftermarket support growing from this brand.

      I have one too and am disappointed. I thought I knew exactly what I was buying but didn't realize just how utterly horrific the cost cutting was while not realizing the aftermarket so was bad too. I have dropped $5k into mods and tunes (I was literally there at the beginning, right there with you at ~340/410 crank) and still am going to get rid of it. From literally throwing the turbo motor in without any adjustments to the SUV tune other than lowering power limits, to the same tires, wheels and brakes that was barely adequate in the non turbo AWD, to pathetic stock battery, to not giving the turbo IRS unlike VW and the Jetta, to having a beautiful interior with the cheapest crappy hard lower plastics, to not even a plain strut tower bar after adding 100 lbs to the nose of the car never designed for it, to the seat belt chime that sounds like the end of the world for how daring even start your best without the seatbelt on, I could go in and on, oh, a bunch of stupid crap on the Plus model but no rear view mirror cam to offset the poor HB rear visibility. I addressed every one of those things except the seatbelt chime and lack of IRS and I'm still gonna get rid of it... Funny enough, I'd consider a CX-5 turbo if I was in the market for a small SUV as it gets all the attention to detail as their best seller, twin scroll turbo with a touch more power, rear seat vents/chargers, IRS, etc. Unfortunately people don't buy cars any more so if they haven't already dropped small cars completely already, they have no incentive to put out anything proper for enthusiasts. So yeah, while the tune and my mods have made the car fun now, the trans cripples us from having good acceleration times like 0-60 and 1/4 mile while also limiting freeway mileage. Full disclosure, I do like to charge cars frequently anyway but after all I spent it still is an SUV engine at heart in a car without IRS and a performance rubbing trans.

    Wanted to throw it out there-- Mazda just had their best sales year in 2023 since 1993 and they are projecting to have an even better year in 2024. I'm confident that the CEO Masahiro Moro will have exciting things to come in the future since he was the head of motorsports when the FD RX-7 was released. He has stated that he wants to lead the company to a future where they still have internal combustion engines and rotary powered cars(powered by e-fuels/hydrogen most likely). I think its fair to say that Mazda has undelivered in the past. I think they simply didn't have the resources to do so while meeting emissions regulations and overpromised. I can only hope that their recent sales numbers will help us see more exciting things in the future.

      That's promising. There's no way a rotary engine would pass emissions, but it's God's gift to sports car enthusiasts. If it was able to run on an alternate fuel that was easily accessible would be amazing. I loved Mazda back in the day, a quirky company that had a goofy engine but had an awesome motorsport first mindset. That mindset is much needed in this time of heavy vehicles with so much computer imput and safety regulations. Toyota having some ownership of Mazda is a horrible horrible thing. Mazda needs to be the outlaw that it once was

    I'm looking forward to the new Mazda 6 that will supposedly use the inline 6 they're already putting in SUVs. It seems to me that back in the 90s and earlier, and even somewhat in the 2000s, it was easier and less expensive to build unusual risky vehicles that were compliant with regulations and able to find niche audiences. Mazda being a small independent automaker thus had enough of a budget to do this, which is where the fun classic Mazdas we love came from. Now it's much harder to do that though. Emissions restrictions for small cars are outrageously strict, way more so than SUVs, hence why every automaker wants you to buy an SUV. Profit margins for small cars are thus lower, especially for niche ones like sports cars and hot hatches, even though the market has proven that whenever automakers do build such things (cough GR Corolla cough) there is a rabid appetite for it so long as there aren't dealer markups.
    I can fully believe Mazda genuinely wants to build the same types of cars they used to, but doing so now is a HUGE financial risk for a small company such as them. It really says a lot that they're going along with some kind of rotary development program anyway, even if they have to be extremely cautious about it.

    Its hard cause as a big mazda fan, i love what they did with their cars of the past and I love the ND miata and is my dream car which im blessed to own one. But it kills me seeing their sports car history shrunk down to only the miata at this point.
    I want to believe that they are going into the sports car segment but every announcement is another SUV and every sports car tease is just an “if” I love the miata but if they made a sports car to rival the Supra/Z thatd probably end up being my new dream car.
    Id like to think that the reason they continue to push SUVs is because, like porsche and every other sports car automaker, they need the profit from SUVs to fund their performance car segment. I honestly want to believe that with their extremely successful CX-5 and successes of the other SUVs that they are finally at the point where they can start branching into making fun cars again.

Even being that old it feels like somewhat of a luxury sedan the interior even being old feels modern enough and comfortable, everything inside feels well built and not cheap. Kills me to see the 6 being killed slowly like they stopped manufacturing in Japan last month, there is still some copium in me that tells me they will make a RWD one but a man can only dream. since the 3 and the 6 share so many things, imagine if the 3 would also turn into a RWD version? It would be the ultimate daily hatchback fun car. I don't mind the SUV's if they pay for some other fun cars that don't sell that much. Just don't let the original Mazda spirit die please...

Using Toyota as an example (am a Toyota guy :p): If I ever buy a "GR" sportscar, I'm removing the GR badges, I really don't like the "Gazoo" branding. I understand it has meaning in Japan, but for all of us who own / love Supra's / MR2's / Celica's, we have a connection with Toyota Racing Development / Toyota Technocraft. I think the issue is Mazda is small as an automotive company, maybe too small to take the large risks. In regards to Mitsubishi I think as automotive enthusiasts its easy to forget what Mitsubishi really is, its not really known for just its cars, Mitsubishi makes trucks, a lot of them, air-conditioning units, heck Mitsubishi makes warships like the JMSDF's destroyers and the F-2, which is a larger F-16, I mean I would argue there are more famous things that Mitsubishi has made that are more famous than the Evo, and its the A6M Zero.

Very fun, smooth, looks amazing, and the experience in the cabin listening to music and cruising makes it wonderful for daily driving. outside looks great with the smooth curves in the sun, sunset, street lights, etc. I love the interior and exterior so much, it really is a beautiful car.
      Also super comfy. went on a 500 mile trip and butt did not hurt (also did it on one entire tank of gas driving really fast one way with about 35mpg and then more fuel conserving the other way at about 45mpg. you can get really good MPG with the manual if you want to. for slightly more sporty driving revving to 4/5k rpm before shifting I get about 26mpg minimum in the city or 30ish mpg in city for casual calm driving).
      It isn't impressive with HP, but overall, this car was made to be a wonderful daily driver, not a sports car, and I think it excels at it. a lot fo the power is in the mid rpm range, so you can keep rpms low for chill driving and then rev up or drop a gear when you want to .

Making a flashy concept car is great, but the Mazda Vision has been only that for years at this point...just a concept coupled with aspirational hype. Honestly, I'd be OK seeing a Compound Turboed Incline 3, a la Toyota, front engined midship, Coupe, something that basically is an RX-7 but without a rotary. I'd even take a small engined hybrid if I'm being honest, just so long as it had that sort of handling, that odd power delivery, and didn't cost a kidney, a lung and one of your arms to buy.

    Mazda just killed the 6 in the US and introduced more SUVs with hybrid drivetrains and a new smooth quiet turbo inline-6 just like, you guessed it, BMW’s I6. I think we all know the direction Mazda has been going and will continue to go. The Miata has been regulated to niche, halo product that doesn’t make them any real profit.

    Rotary technology for the new RX sportscar can mean two things, either a normal rotary engine layout, but that will have horrible fuel economy and engine life. The other option is a REV layout like the MX-30, probably with 2 rotors instead of one. I'm not sure that will sell much either. The MX-30 REV is not a major sales hit. It seems that Mazda has hit a dead end with it.
    They might be able to set up a collaboration with Toyota, selling REV versions of the new EVs that Toyota is planning to introduce in the coming years, but I don't think that will provide much volume for Mazda. The SkyActive-X doesn't seem to go anywhere either. It's sad to see that the brand that seems to be the most innovative in engine design doesn't seem to have much success.

  • @kiefershanks4172
    @kiefershanks4172 Před 3 měsíci +1

    Personally, I don't foresee another affordable sports car offering from Mazda. Even the MX-5 is only sort of affordable and even then, it has very limited utility. If anything, I think any new sports car will be a low-volume, very high performance hybrid, possibly with a rotary engine. With Mazda currently selling cars very well, I think what they will want soon is a halo car in their line-up. An RX-9 would fit that bill. But it'll be expensive. GT-R money I bet.

    Mazda needs to get their act together on the enthusiast platform. They have a wonderful legacy from the 70s to the 2000s, so it blows my mind that they still refuse to capitalize on that.
    They need to make a new RX7 or whatever it will be called, but they need to do it RIGHT. Allowing Ford to tell them what they can and can’t do on the RX8 is why it failed. They can’t let Toyota do that on the next one.
    The closest thing we’ve gotten is the top trim Mazda3. That’s it. They obviously have the ability, but they refuse.

Those contributed to the decline of the Japanese sports cars (the third crisis forced Honda to cancel the road-going version of the HSV-010 race car, for one).

    Did not watch the YT just read the YT title. Mazdaspeed ended in 2013. Mazdaspeed is now MSR(Mazda Spirit Racing). Hopefully this Mazda MSR brand will satisfy the American hunger for Small Roadsters with V8 size HP. Or hopefully someone in the states rips out the GR Corolla (AWD 3 cylinder turbo) and swap to a Miata (anyone: NA NB NC ND). So far the only car manufacturer that has hit the nail so to speak is Tesla with their Model S Plaid. Americans has always been addicted to speed. Americans have the best Highways compared to most places. Only the Deutschland Autobhan is second to none, unfortunately, their no speed limit regs is only allowed in some areas of Deutschland (Germany). Americans need to make our own Nurburgring (Green Hell). So American car manufacturers can create better cars the go fast not just in a straight line however in apexes in all racing lines too.

    as cool as it looks, the iconic sp is lame. hear me out because i know calling a rotary lame is gonna get a lot of hate. that iconic sp is using the same type of hybrid system as the MX-30 REV, except with one extra rotor, and look how that turned out for the MX-30 REV. It got pulled from the market because no one bought it. Thats because its a series hybrid, which basically means its an ev with a built in gas generator. Thats exactly what the iconic sp is, an ev with a two rotor generator, and they are calling it a sports car. I would accept it as a sports car if it was a parallel hybrid like every other hybrid on the market, where the gas engine and electric motor work together and it gives you a big increase in power as well. thaats why this concept is lame, its not getting the hp benefits of both engines

  • @DanielBrownOre
    @DanielBrownOre Před 3 měsíci

    Other than the niche Miata, Mazda does not invest in cars at all anymore because sales suck and not big enough company to do the Porsche thing. I tried to make a Mazda 3 AWD turbo work for me but but very long story short it's too cost cut for what you get because despite a decent aftermarket now, there are major things that can't be upgraded and limit it (transmission and rear suspension). Bigger turbos with more car like instead of SUV tunes are here, and maybe the transmission is entirely able to be tuned but doesn't look like there is enough enthusiast market for that to happen and mileage will still drop like a rock past 70 because the gearing is too low for only 6 gears, so sucks for long 75mph+ road trips.
    However, they do make a few nice SUV's for sure, I would certainly consider a CX-5 turbo, which doesn't have most of the bad things of the 3 because Mazda addressed them with the most attention to detail as their big seller, but I'm still hoping for one last updated ICE trans from them.
    So yeah, I may be disappointed in my current Mazda but they have some excellent SUV models, but unless the sales of those AND their cars can stay pretty high, I don't see them pulling a Porsche and having money to subsidize a low selling car.
