      @@AK-pr2nk they would have been best of getting a better drummer but one with Tony's style of raw power. White was way too light and technical. He's in another league than Tony but even then he's really nothing crazy. Tony had a great raw sound be he wasn't very good at all. He could barely keep time and had the most basic fills and never a solo. He just played like a kid bashing the drums. Which was part of his charm, however if they had a real professionally trained jazz-rock drummer they could have had Tony's sound and sooooo much more. So many of their songs would have benefited from a fill here, a solo there, etc.
      Thing with Tony and guigsy is they just weren't good enough to be professional. They had no chemistry and could barely keep time let alone improvise and change things up. That's not just Noel's opinion but Owen Morris their producer. Tony tries to whitewash his poor playing by rewriting history but it easnt a personal thing it was because he was a bad drummer on a technical professional level. Which is why he never moved onto high success. Also his stupidity in getting rid of his rights was insane even at the time, so dudes onviously not the brightest. Anyway Oasis' heavily compressed sound is a direct result of Owen morris trying to cover up the horrible rhythm section playing. It has to be real bad playing to warrant changing the sound to such a degree just to cover it up. We can never have an audiophile version of the first few albums because they baked compression and distortion into the mastertape to cover up for this bad playing. He practically invented brickwalling just to cover up their poor playing. It's why on most songs on the album besides small breaks or intros you can't really even make out the drums or bass because they couldn't make it through a whole song without messing up. In some ways it's a shame because oasis could have really been so much better and well regarded. A good drummer and bassist would have given them even more punch and more in your face power. However their poor playing directly lead to oasis's signature sound, do everything happens for a reason. They were okay for small live shows since the music blends together and it's much less noticeable and imperfect, however you can't have that level of playing on a major studio album. Even Alan's playing was nothing to write home about however he was much better than Tony. Its just they couldnt have picked such drastically different drummers in style due to Alan's light technical playing to Tony's bashing. It seems like they didn't put much thought and just grabbed the first guy available with no regard to sound or style. But even recording a simple song like wonderwall would have been extremely difficult for tony due to the transparent drums. I doubt he'd even be able to do the simple fills right and wouldn't be able to have a light touch like Alan.
      If you have a poor rhythm team you're fucked. Even in a guitar driven band like oasis you can't succeed without it because they're the backbone of the band. They had no choice but to get rid of them. I'm genuinely suprised they stayed as long as they did, especially guigsy. If oasis was signed by a major label since a major label would have said drop these dudes, or they would have gotten the best of the best session players and kept them for touring. Like I said they could barely even record, and it was even rough with Alan due to him not meshing with guigsy at all due to experience leve differencesl. And Alan wasn't amazing either he was just alot better than Tony, he has a bunch of live shows where he misses stuff or plays out of time like on JILY, and they continhed covering up the rhythm section in much of the production. However this is more due to gugisy and no chemistry than Alan not being able to play. A drummer is only as good as his bassist and vise versa. But Tony was full on terrible in the studio which is why his only memorable parts are the simplest of beats at the begining of songs like supersonic or live forever. If I rank Alan is a C+ rate professional drummer, Tony is F. However Tony is a B rate amateur player. It's just oasis built their sound with his style of drumming, any other raw drummer would have done better and no one would miss him at all. It's just nostalgia for that old sound not his skill.
      This terrible rhythm section is why you can never have audiophile or surround sound of the first few albums. The surround sound sacd of morning glory was horrible and never attempted again due to such poor playing and the baked in compression to cover them up.
      Their biggest mistake was not finding a replacement for gugisy when they kicked out Tony and not considering sound and style but picking the first bloke available. They should have had brought in 2 guys with wicked chemistry. But shoulda coulda woulda.
      It's a shame they didn't get some absolute beast drummer and bassist because their songs would be even more powerful with masterful low-end. I do believe because of Noel's own limitations they would never get the best of the best it more became a revolving door of players. If they had someone like Zak Starkey and a sick bassist from the getgo they'd have done alot better. The only real amazing players they've had were Starkey and gem. And even then they're still not the top of the foodchain.. I don't think noel would have allowed someone like gem in in 97 because he was alot better than him. Only when noel wanted to stop playing lead and just sing/strum did he get him. Like noel even stated he himself was the best drummer and that's saying alot. I also believe Noel's writing limited them due to writing such basic drum and bass parts. He should have gotten professionals and allow them to build their parts around his guitar. Supposedly this is why Alan left due to hating his limited and basic role and noel not allowing him any say. And that basic limited playing Tony could hardly due in the studio. If he had a better work ethic then maybe he'd have become great. But seems like he refused to put in the work and had a massive attitude. He makes it seem noel had a grudge about him and all sorts of nonsense but in reality he was so bad he couldn't record and led to the birth of brickwalling to cover up his playing. Morris has no reason to lie about his poor playing and said this in 2014 when he was pissed for noel not giving him the chance to remaster his albums. So he'd have taken Tony's side if he wasn't telling the truth. And Owen was a beginner at the time, any senior studio mixer would have instantly called for his sacking instead of making it murky compressed mush to cover it up. So no matter how much it's fun to think about Tony staying, or looking back fondly on live preformances of his, he'd never have made it past that 1st album and really shouldn't have been on DM. The best would have been finding someone with his style but 100x better. Sacking him was really the only option regardless of personal conflicts. Theres a reason he never went onto solo success and why no one successful in their scene ever recruited him their band. If he was competent he'd have been recruited by his peers due to his connections in the scene/industry and just having been a part of oasis considering their stature. But everyone in the industry realized hell never be any better than a pub player and was not humble or dedicated enough to really grind and practice his way to success.
      Okay enough rambling now. Here's what Owen said:
      "...And a lot of the mixing on Def maybe and Morning Glory was about hiding the not so great playing (by certain members), so the "compressed mush" was actually essential in my opinion. It was about delivery the songs, Liam's vocals etc as best as possible, given the general overall ineptness of the backing tracks and sonic production."

      To be fair Liam HAS regained his voice; check out some of his solo stuff. I think the main thing is that they don't want to do a 10-country leg of a tour unless they have some new stuff they can contribute. Liam and Noel co-writing a few songs as well as a public squashing of the beef would go a long way. I'd definitely be first in the queue to get tickets. Maybe bring back Guigs and Bonehead, and possible Tony Carroll if he could technically perform and get on with his former mates. One can hope.

      It was all down hill once what’s the story hit. This is prime Oasis. All of Definitely Maybe, the b-sides and live shows. What’s the story was great but not in the same league. The songs just never had that loud-as-fuck wall-of-sound punk noise mayhem ever again.

    • @buddhull
      @buddhull Před 4 lety +2

      FaxanaduJohn sounds like we agree 100%. I love the early demos, bootlegs and live show footage almost as much as the first LP and b-sides, maybe sometimes more. My personal belief is that the style and limitations of Tony kept things youthful and primitive while Noel had his influences widely distributed which kept the melodies brighter and more rock-focused.

    • @FaxanaduJohn
      @FaxanaduJohn Před 4 lety +3

      Bud Hull Definitely of similar minds! I just think that Noel didn’t like Tony and wanted him out- Noel in interviews from late ‘94 to mid ‘95 is just way toxic whenever Tony is mentioned! Alan White was technically a better drummer although as you say Tony’s singular style was missed, and Noel’s songwriting just wasn’t as strong for me personally once WtSMG came around.

    • @buddhull
      @buddhull Před 4 lety +4

      FaxanaduJohn yeah, in this particular instance the “limitation” of Tony’s drumming actually enhanced the material rather than broadened it too greatly, losing its focus in the process. There’s some great tracks on WTSMG, but they’re nearly ballads (or *are* ballads) besides Hello, Bonehead’s Bank Holiday and Some Might Say. It’s probably telling that a track that wasn’t even included on the CD release might be my favorite from the record.
      And I agree with you again, I think it came down to personal disdain toward Tony himself as well as the ability reasoning. He didn’t speak of any other non-relative member the way he did of him, so the signs are there.
      Cloudburst and Bring It On Down have all of the slightly more technical drumming I really need from this band.

    Good To Be Free had more organ here than I recall hearing elsewhere. It's a cool sound, though I tend to prefer a straighter guitar sound.
