One of my favourite albums of all time, also bought this in 81… level 42 are still touring, actually went to see them in Portsmouth last year, still sounding superb….
On the same album, listen to "dune tune". Had this album since new in 81. Was my first ever vinyl album purchase. Still in my top 5. Not everybody knows their early stuff, which is their best material imo 👌
Spot on! I first saw them live in 81 and their early stuff while not as commercially successful as what followed from 85 onwards is still my favourites today.
I love that you got your first taste of Level 42. They're a talented, but often under-appreciated band in the music industry. "Something About You" was their biggest US hit, while "Lessons in Love" was their biggest UK hit. They really excel with their live shows and early instrumental tunes like "43," " Mr. Pink," and "The Pursuit of Accidents.". Their other early material is great too such as: "The Sun Goes Down (Living it Up), "Weave Your Spell," "Hot Water," "Starchild" and much more. The two vocalists in the band are: Mark King on bass (he usually sings the verses like on Love Games), and Mike Lindup on keyboards (He usually handles the choruses with his amazing falsetto). Sometimes Mike will take the lead on a song like The Sun Goes Down, Starchild, and Weave Your Spell.
I've loved Level 42 since 1985 when I first heard "Something About You" on MTV coming home from high school. Mark King is the reason why I learned to play bass. He's simply phenomenal.
i loved it when i was 12 and i still love this song. Its so funky its incredible, like STARCHILD...such good songs of level 42. Later on they went downwards with to much commercial stuff and not real music. Funk and soul was gone. But I remebmer them for their great starting years. fabulous
Something About You was their biggest hit in the US. Lessons In Love top the charts in other countries. These are the songs that introduced me to Level 42. The bass-lines are dope and the lead vocalist Mark King is the master of bass playing.
Love me some L42! Been a fan since a GF took me to a Tina Turner concert in the early 80's and L42 was the opener. TT was great but L42 was awesome and been a big fan ever since. There's a group called Dirty Loops that are equally talented and funky that y'all need to check out. They recently dropped a cover of Thriller (collab with Cory Wong) that is not to be missed. They are managed by Quincy Jones so yes they are that good! Cheers
Went to see them six times in the 80s ...their best album imo is .....The Early Tapes ....pure jazzfunk ....they went a bit too commercial and popy later on for me
One of my favorite albums, I would fall asleep to them and now that’s you are replaying ❤️❤️❤️. It just felt like so much love, no prejudice and not no hate but btw” love games “ is the least of my favs 🫣
Interesting you should say that. Their 1983 album "Standing In The Light" is almost entirely produced by Larry Dunn and Verdine White from E. W & F :) The LP included the singles "Living It Up" and "Micro-Kid", worth checking out especially the remixed versions.
Hey Modern Renaissance man why did you disrespect that big black girl on your Instagram. That was very mean. You could have said something more positive and uplifting.
Hey I Love your channel but is there anyway that you can speak less than 100 words a minute ? Only joking, keep up the good work... Pete from England...
It makes me smile to see someone discovering a band I've been loving since high school, some 37 years ago.
1985 for me bud ,
Mark King on the slap.
He always hit hard, but live…..even HARDER.
Superb funky British band.
As a Brit , this warms my heart. When I moved to the states , I lent this album to a pastor friend of mine ... a musician himself and same reaction.

Great comment 👏🏼

Also "Starchild". "Dune Tune" I always liked. Their albums "Standing In The Light" and "True Colours" are loaded with great song.

Level 42 did some great tunes, But that slap bass is what I always remember from being a kid👍 Shout out from UK 🇬🇧 mate!
Mark King is a fantastic bassist, for sure. Darn fine vocalist as well.
Watched This band at least 3 times over the past 40 years... Luvvin it.
Bought every album

Really pleased you picked one of there less commercial hits. They have some stunning stuff that is super funky
well said, the early stuff was amazing, I saw them live back in the mid 80s, Love Games was there biggest track then
The best band for bass player. Mark King is the Man, playing, singing, and chewin a gum at the same time. The best
Thats right!! Dude is a monster!!
Got to do the "live" stuff. Will be amazed how Mark King can sing and play The Complex bass lines with ease.
Been listening to Mark King & Lv]evel 42 since the early eighties. He is the master of slap bass and still is.
Fantastic band 🇬🇧
Check out ‘Good Man in a Storm’ from 86’s ‘World Machine’. Amazing bass line which Mark King plays and sings over.

It was probably 1987 or 1988 because I saw that concert. I saw Level 42 in 1986 opening for Madonna on her "True Blue" tour.
If you want to see the quality of the singer (and Bass Player) Mark King, look up 'Mr Pink' live. Mindblowing skills.
Probably the funkiest band to ever come out of the UK.
Mmmm, they are funky, and great, but the AWB were tight too. The Haggis Horns are a modern day Brit band playing heavy funk and worth a listen.
Jamiroquai might have something to say about that
Mark King is an outstanding bass player. If you really want to see him cook, check out their live video of them performing Mr. Pink. Dude is on fire.
You should pick up 'Something About You' and 'Leaving Me Now' by them.
Yep these are great picks.
Just absolute class 👌
Mark started out as a drummer but decided to slap the bass instead. 1981 Love Games: czcams.com/video/e0BcV8ES47A/video.htmlsi=cuAss7TUfGH7qtWT
I still have that original album 👍🏼🎸
Try "Eyes Waterfalling", this is one of the sickest slap bass songs ever...
Jazz funk at its best
Happy to still be here too.
If you like bass listen to there MR Pink instrument live at Reading
Went to see them six times in the 80s ...their best album imo is .....The Early Tapes ....pure jazzfunk ....they went a bit too commercial and popy later on for me

Mark king is bass guru good British jazz funk they got few nice vibe tunes ,,,🇬🇧🇬🇧🚫🚫🤙🤙🤙
Great song, but the full length versions of their songs are much better 👌
4:50 to 5:43 that's wow factor 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Try star child from the same album sounds brilliant and that bass.
To their credit, this resembles Earth Wind and Fire minus the brass.
Level 42 play live with three brass musicians.

When I hit the like button, the number doesn't go up. 😮
I'm shadowbanned
Best music of the 60ts 70ts 80ts
Listen to Mr pink!
You will actually get the 12in version of Love Games and doubles the Bass Intro
Part of this track reminds me a bit of one of George Benson’s tracks
Thanks Ty, I knew you’d like it😂
should've put him on to a live version.
@@df3575 you could always request a live version
@@rickymarden8342 Done now. But you're the one with his ear prior to this post....
I'm new here.
But to be clear, I'm partial to the Live '83 SVT taping.
It is OK not sure why but it didn't impress us much. We must really be stuck in our own era✌❣
Hey Modern Renaissance man why did you disrespect that big black girl on your Instagram. That was very mean. You could have said something more positive and uplifting.
Review the sun goes down bt them 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🤙🤙-

Been a L42 fan since I first heard them in the 80s. Still touring too. Check out their other tunes too.
