  • Two hundred young dancers have come to New York to audition for the prestigious American Ballet Theatre school. They've dreamed of this moment, but all the desire in the world counts for nothing. The competition is fierce. The judges look only at physique and movement. Who will make it? Who will get cut?

American Ballet Theatre (ABT) is a classical ballet company based in New York City. It has an annual eight-week season at the Metropolitan Opera House (Lincoln Center) in the spring and a shorter season at the David H. Koch Theater in the fall; the company tours around the world the rest of the year. ABT was founded in 1939 by Lucia Chase and Richard Pleasant and is recognized as one of the world's leading classical ballet companies. ABT is also the parent company of the American Ballet Theatre Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School, and was recognized as "America's National Ballet Company" in 2006 by the United States Congress.

Almost 50 years later and this still explains the dance world so accurately!

I wonder where that girl is now. She would be in like her early 60s now. Did she continue ballet into adulthood? Fascinating documentary

Leon was wonderful! The demands on what dancers do back then to what they do now are amazingly different. 3 pirouettes on point and extensions to you ears, plus high arches are the norm now

@@kathymyers7279 Yes, she was selected to be a company member as a result of this summer scholarship program. (these weren't auditions, per se, as the video states, but a summer scholarship program from which some girls were chosen) Cindy danced with them for maybe 8 or 9 nears before retiring to pursue other things. She has only recently gone back to dance, learning and now competing in ballroom. I grew up seeing her rehearsing with Barishnikov, Cynthia Harvey, and others.

I notice that the early 1970s leotards appear to have less Spandex. They tend to be more baggy and wrinkled than today’s leotards.
