      Well actually the world's cheapest foods are plant based, beans, rice, pasta, vegetables etc.
      Sure some of the plant based meat brands are expensive but that's because there's not enough of it to have competitive prices.
      Plus people say that a plant based diet is expensive but then all they say is they eat grass (didn't know grass was so expensive) yet they wouldn't mind paying out their arse for a lobster dinner 😅 the hypocrisy and double standards are ridiculous

  • @peterknutsen3070
    @peterknutsen3070 Před rokem +49

    I'm quite sure it's a price issue.
    You're not going to replace fancy t-bone steaks that people eat once a month, or a rare weekly treat such as a few rashers of crispy bacon. The real target to pursue is replacing the bulk of ordinary people's animal protein consumption, like pork, and also things that aren't red meat, such as chicken, fish and eggs. And here, cost is a huge parameter.
    So, the answer is: "They forgot to make their product cheap; instead, they assumed they could guilt poor people, those of the underclass, working class and lower middle class, into buying expensive products."

    • @jpe1
      @jpe1 Před rokem +4

      Do you have any facts to support your assertion that [anyone] expected poor people to buy anything one way or another, due to guilt or any other emotion? Your theory sounds like more of a fantasy than anything based in reality.

      I mean, the answer is price, but your assumption of their assumption is silly. It's only in the past 5 years that we've gotten to notmeats that taste like meats, and it wasn't for lack of trying. Development had costs, and production has costs, and the economies of scale haven't kicked in strongly, all of which inherently makes for a more expensive product. And I've seen zero guilt based advertising; it's all "did you want something that tasted like meat but wasn't? It's finally arrived!"

    • @Deathmastertx
      @Deathmastertx Před rokem +1

      Chicken is way less environmentally damaging to red meat. Getting people to forgo beef in favour of chicken and pork would be a definite win. The big issue is that the real costs of producing beef often aren't priced into the prices people pay. The GHG emissions and deforestation isn't paid by the consumer of the beef but by everyone. Beef should be more expensive.
      The long-term solution, and one in which I wish we could just get to now, is pricing meat, veg and grains at what is actually appropriate to their true cost of production. They pay a GHG emissions tax which funds competitive contracts for GHG sequestration or some other counter.
      Plant-based "meat" has its place but imo is kind of a weird temporary blip to tide over our current cultural way of centring meals around meat. Remember for most of civilisation, most of our sustenance would have come from grains like wheat, rice and barley. If I'm having a vegetarian dinner, I'd sooner reach for a lentil curry, meat-less stir-fry or some pasta with pesto than some meat replacement.

I did try many taste like the real thing and I would not mind. However the biggest obstacles is price. The cost of these plant meats are several times more expensive than real meat. anyhow, a different point that I made in another comment is that if everybody ditched meat a healthy plant based diet would likely become unsustainably expensive too.

People are making money off meat products and off non-meat products. If you want to look at what's having an impact on the environment, look at food waste. It's absolutely huge. But that is a bigger social change as it would probably mean less restaurants (huge amounts of food wasted) and unlimited supermarkets. At the end of the day, if we all just eat what we need for our bodies, there would be no hunger and climate problems. so many products are created, be it food or not, and then end up in landfill, resulting in 100% wasted resources.

    Kal, very nice segment. If you wanted to go a little deeper, I would be interested in seeing the math behind the global warming emissions associated with livestock. Feeling very skeptical.
    I drove by a hillside covered with sheep who had beautifully mowed a field in advance of fire season. What alternative is modeled that avoids all the emissions that produces? Leaving the grass stand? Mow it with a scythe?
    Carbon, in particular, has a cycle. Plant growth captures it but, after the plant dies, releases it. The body of the plant is decomposed in one of several ways but *it* *does* *not* *stay* *captured* . If no animals eat the grass in a given field for a century, you do not see coal deposits building up in the field. (We are no longer in the carboniferous period.) That carbon was consumed by fungi or animals and released.
    To raise livestock, one needs to get enough plants to feed them. This involved fostering carbon capture, which the cows then consume. Only looking at part of the cycle is disingenuous.
    If you compare that to air travel, there is no cycle. Fossil fuels are extracted and burned. It's a one-way street.

    I'M NEVER going to stop eating meat-According to a report by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), gene editing could significantly reduce methane emissions from cows’ belches and farts which contribute to the climate crisis1. Veterinary researchers at the University of Adelaide have shown that how much methane a cow produces depends on that cow’s genetic makeup. That means that genetic engineering could help shrink the big burpers’ carbon hoofprint. CRISPR has already been used to tweak other traits in cows, so methane emission could be a next step.
