How We Made It - Weighted Poker Chips: Where Does The Weight Come From?

People usually have a positive response when they hold a pile of weighted poker chips in their hands. The heavier weight makes the chips feel more robust and of higher quality. The secret sauce is in the weight.
In this video, you'll notice before the mold closes and the liquid plastic resin is injected into the mold, the mold operator manually places a metal disc onto each cavity of the mold base. The disc has a number of holes in it, to allow for the flow of plastic as it is injected into the mold cavity. Notice also that the metal disc is placed onto a couple of small pins to hold it in place. These chips are more expensive to produce due to the added cost of the metal disc, the labor to insert the disc onto each of the mold cavities, and the slow molding production rate (due to the low cavity count of the mold). However, for those projects that require high perceived quality, the weight is worth the added cost!
