How to cut down an internal hollow door

  • This is how to cut down an internal hollow core door. Internal doors generally will have a hollow core made up of cardboard in a honeycomb pattern. If you cut the door down you may weaken the door by removing the timber support and also by exposing the core to the elements. This is how to Do It Yourself properly. Its Aug-2023. Today I bought at Home Depot in Fishkill, NY a cheap hollow core door. I did exactly as you did in this video. The door construction was almost identical to this, same cardboard honeycombs, but not wood on the bottom strip, something made of papery fibers, but wood-like. This was so easy its ridiculous. Need to mirror an existing 28" x 77" door and this saved a lot of money from not having to buy a solid core door. Thanks Bill!

    Well. If I’d seen this 9 years ago I would have altered my bathroom door so I could have had a mat in front of the shower. Selling up soon though so I’ll leave that for the next owners and remember this for if I need it at my next house 😊

    Thank-you! Really appreciate this view inside the door. I just bought a house and most of the doors do not shut properly. Everything I've read says to sand the door jam, but the doors are all crap, and when I have the money / time I'll probably replace them, but in the meantime, I am going to sand the doors down so they stop hitting the jams. I was worried about how much I could actually sand, but seeing this - I can see I have plenty of room for what I need. CHEERS!

    Hey Bill, thanks for sharing this video. Can the same method be used to cut the door vertically (make it thinner rather than shorter)?
    We have some roller doors in our wardrobes that I want to convert into regular hinged doors, but they overlap each, so I'd need thinner doors.
    Thanks in advance for any tips! 🙏

    What do you do about the original lock position now that the standard ergonomic height for the door handle has been reduced? It's my understanding that hollow doors have a block of wood inserted in that area to allow installation of a locking mechanism. I'm assuming this will no longer match the position of the strike plate and keep of the door frame.

    • @billshowto
      @billshowto  Před 2 lety +2

      The lock position dosnt change. The door has simply been shortened at the base to allow for new carpet or other flooring 👍
