    Oh wow this is beautiful! This happens to be the first dyeing video I've seen and I'm keen to give it a go! I had no idea that the colour would change like that in the cake. So pretty! I'd like to do recycled t-shirt yarn also.

      Welcome to the channel! Food coloring won't work well on cotton yarns, it works best on protein based fibers like wool, silk, alpaca, etc. However, you can have some fund gradients like this with tshirt yarn and fiber reactive dyes or tie dye.

      With food coloring, you want to wear gloves to keep from dyeing your skin a bit. The biggest risk in this project was that I would end up with some green fingers. :)

    I’m curious if you’ve ever tried a double dye on one cake? I mean inject one color into the center, and put another on the outer? Not sure if that would even work but might be a cool experiment. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Maybe I’ll give it a try.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 4 lety +3

      *spoiler alert* coming soon! ;) I've done a few different doubles with cakes. I've done a few cakes with two strands of yarn held together. I've also dyed a cake, then re-wound it with the inside on the outside and dyed it again.

      ChemKnits Tutorials amazing... can you please tell us how to dye 100% cotton yarn ?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 6 lety +1

      Acid dyes (including food colorin) won't work on cotton. Fiber reactive dyes will work. I use one step tulip tie dye kits on cotton.

    • @rcrocheter
      @rcrocheter Před 6 lety

      Will food dye work on microfiber acrylics as well?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 6 lety

      No. Food dye and acid dyes (food coloring is a type of acid dye) only work on protein based fibers (wool, silk, etc) and nylon (which has a similar chemical structure.)

    I am wondering about how the snow effected how the dyeing turned out I love those green hues I am thinking the ph of the snow effected the dyeing process. I ve been dyeing a long time and I ve found that I need to add vinegar in with the dye at first and then if the dye hasn't exhausted then I will add it in the middle of the process I really believe that water types do effect the colors.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 6 lety +1

      It is possible. I didn't check the pH of the dye before I added the yarn to it. The only acid from the snow dyeing was in the presoaked yarn, so while it is possible some vinegar came off, it was likely super dilluted for the colors to bind. pH of rain is slightly acidic (more so than tap water, but nothing like vinegar.)
      I did a science fair project in 7th grade where I collected water samples from local streams and rivers and collected rain water to check the pH. Thinking about this is a fun throwback. :)

      sounds like fun I did a soil test where a jar of soil was then mixed with water and shaken and let settle to see the layers of the different kinds of soils and organic matter was in the jars I think did like 12 samples for my ag class yep per farm girl here funny what happens to our interest as we get older .

    I have a cake soaking right now in water and I want to try tomorrow to dye in the pot. I’m not sure whether to use food coloring or Kool-Aid or maybe some fruit juice any ideas?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials  Před 5 lety +1

      I do this a lot with food coloring. Depending on how much KoolAid you add the colors might strike faster (since more Citric Acid is in the pot) which would look really cool. Fruit juices may or may not dye the yarn depending on a lot of factors. I haven't tried this technique with any natural dyes yet except for Indigo.

      This was a leftover mixture so I'm not 100% sure what colors were in there. Definitely blue, and yellow and likely some reds.
