    10:28 Shout-out to UI marketing for clearly labeling it as 1.5 Gbps with IDS/IPS. Looks like it checks out!

    It'd have been nice to talk about the thermals during all these tests. I read this thing is getting really, really hot.

      Certainly, but we have found this to be very circumstance based. It has no fans in it. Our upgraded model sitting on a kitchen type bench top, without the plastic feet attached with a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB drive installed was warm, but never to the point I could not keep my hand placed on it.

      @@The_Tech_Geeks worth mentioning because i run UCG-Max also: If you place this device vertically, the temps will drop - my UCG Max never goes beyond 64 degrees. Also the mini display will also turn!

    Nice vid, can you explain the usecase/benefits of smart queues if they are set to the max connection speed?

    • @The_Tech_Geeks
      @The_Tech_Geeks  Před měsícem +1

      The video was more to show that Smart Queues could run up to 1 Gb/s, as on other models as soon as you turned on Smart Queues the performance throughput dropped to 300mb/s no matter how fast your internet connection was. Since the UCG-Max can handle internet speeds of up to 2.5Gb/s I was hoping we could also set Smart Queues up beyond 1Gb/s, but at least turning them on right now does not have a throughput drop as previously.

      @@The_Tech_Geeks great review, I note that the UCG Ultra and UCG Max share exactly the same cpu. I'd expect the same results with Smart Queues?

      It should be, but it could be a firmware update between the tests that may have made the difference.

      @@judgiesa85 i was wondering this too, maybe a change to the way the system OS works or more aggressive clocks or something?

    I recently bought a Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra (just weeks before the announcement of the Max...). I think my old USG preformed better on my 1Gbps connection (DHCP, not PPoE). I could download from Usenet (behind a VPN) and hit 95MB/s - sometimes higher - on the USG, but I can't get it above 80MB/s - even with IDS/IPS disabled - on the CG Ultra. I heard it may be because there is no hardware offloading on the CGU, but I was also wondering if it was because it's limited by its internal 1Gbps switch/hub.
    Have you (or anyone here) had much experience with the Ultra vs Max? Do you think the CG Max will be able to keep up and get me back to my old speeds? I'm tempted to upgrade to the 'No Storage' version of the CG Max when it's available, and sell my CG Ultra.
    Thanks for your help!

      Good question. You mention you are behind a VPN. If that VPN is connected directly to your computer then there really should be no offloading issues as the UCG-Ultra is not handling any of the encryption / decryption and that is your computer, so I would suggest the speeds would be more related to your ISPs router or your computer in that instance.
      If you have connected the UCG-Ultra directly to a VPN, then I would probably not expect the performance to be too great and 80mb/s sounds about right.
      On a UCG-Ultra we have got speeds of around 800 - 900mb/s and on a UCG-Max we have speeds of around 1.5Gb/s
      The only other things to check would be:
      1. Try forcing the WAN connection to 1Gb/s FDX, it could be possible that it is not being able to negociate with your router correctly and so the speed is getting forced to a lower rate
      2. Try reducing your MTU a little and see if that helps.
      Just a couple of thoughts to help with your troubleshooting.

      @@The_Tech_Geeks thank you! Really good to know that you've gotten those speeds out of the UCG Ultra.
      I'll start having a play with those settings (as well as disabling the VPN) to see what speeds I can get.
      And yes, you are correct: the VPN is running on the same machine as the Usenet client, and the only app using it is the Usenet client.
      I've ended up disabling IPS/IDS, as I'm doubtful it is useful to me - though it was interesting/alarming seeing how many bots come knocking at my door (SWAG reverse proxy) every day - and it makes a noticeable impact on Usenet downloads (an extra 15MB/s), which is the only application that saturates my download bandwidth.
      But yes: I'll take a look at those settings, and will also confirm non-VPN speeds, too.
      I just wish it wasn't such a dance to reconnect my old USG so I could confirm there speeds I got with it. I might end up doing that anyway, just to be sure.
      Thanks for your help. If I find anything interesting, I'll report back.

    Can you show how the nvme drive works?

    • @The_Tech_Geeks
      @The_Tech_Geeks  Před 19 dny

      I am not quite sure what you mean - The drive is there for Unifi Protect and other Unifi applications that need to storage video footage etc. We have a video coming out later this week that shows how to configure it all as well.

    can i buy the no storage option and install my own nvme without buying anymore addons?

    • @The_Tech_Geeks
      @The_Tech_Geeks  Před 15 dny

      At the moment the no storage model does not come with a tray to insert the NVMe. This will be available at the end of September.
