I trained a 2 year-old Aussie as my mobility dog. The hard part was figuring out how to train him to go up and down escalators.
First, ALL nails MUST BE SHORT, ESPECIALLY DEWCLAWS. There is a danger of a claw getting caught at the bottom and especially the top of the escalator.
Next, be sure that DOGO has several opportunities to observe this escalator, seeing people come and go, so that he understands it's function. If there are stairs alongside it, letting dog pace you while you are on the escalator and DOGO is on stairs is also good.
Give dog has had a chance to sniff the top and bottom steps, but DO NOT LET HIM STEP ONTO ESCALATOR at first. Dawdling there is the dangerous part.
The trick is to use a long line or an assistant. You need the dog to RUN ONTO the escalator and to run off the last few steps. Do this training late or early in the day when there are very few others nearby. (DOGO had already met the security guard a few times and guard could see that the dog was gentle and well-trained.
While an elevator existed, the building was extremely large and waits were VERY LONG; the stairs were impossible for me.)
Holding my long line, I tossed a small doggy biscuit onto escalator a couple steps ahead of me. Don't use anything smaller on escalators, lest it get caught. DOGO trotted up ahead, got the treat and sat on escalator. I took his harness until near top, then dropped it for the long leash and tossed another dog biscuit a few feat past the escalator, saying "GO GET."
