- We polish this HUGE Air Force C-137, call sign FREEDOM 1. This is the plane depicted in the recent movie Argo. The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic crisis between Iran and the United States. More than sixty American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days (November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981) after a group of Iranian students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, who supported the Iranian Revolution, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Find out what it takes to restore this massive beast.

I love to see the statue of liberty detailed by Ammo
It would be brown, lmao
The patina is desired. It will never be detailed
@@harissarris4301 you'd be very surprised, brass and copper when polished like crazy is almost like white
@@rcbuggies57 it can be anything from nearly-white to golden and red depending on alloy
@@Nworthholf very true, and my mistake, since the statue of liberty is pure copper it'd probably polish out to be a very pure copper color. But most brasses with a decent zinc content will be very close to the color of a white gold ring immediately after polishing, but oxidation brings it back to yellow tones extremely quickly.
Not sure why but this randomly

Not sure why I watched this entire 25-minute video of you guys detailing a plane, probably because it was extremely satisfying and the production quality was on point, subbed.

A nightmare ☠
Yellowed from cigarettes. Thats all you need to imagine it.
Nautricity You don’t know that.
Watching this more than a year later, I have to commend the amount of dedication and effort that all of you put forth into taking this monumental task. I'd like to think it wasn't your great editing skills, but I could see/feel that there was a sense of passion that exuded from each of you. While I doubt that my hobby/part-time side-job journey will allow an opportunity as grand as this, nonetheless, I wholly appreciate the time you take to put forth videos like this, outside the normal scope of detailing cars. Thank you Larry.
Man, the quality of the videos is really high. I feel like I'm watching the Discovery Channel.
To all the crew involved, well done and you should be very proud of the job.
I Love how much this Guy Loves His Craft! He really makes it Poetic, He really cares about every Car, it can be an f1 racing car, to a multi million dollar car. He puts the same love and attention into a chevy Impala from the 90's. This Man is a true example of hard Work and dedication. And He seems like a really Great Guy. I'm happy Him and His Family is thriving.
wow, it's amazing to see someone evolve in their craft as you have sir. I remember when I first started watching your channel. You talked about the impala you used to sleep in. now you're detailing air liners. A true inspiration you are sir. CONGRATULATIONS.
I got to say the quality of your videos is outstanding. This might take the cake, the editing, the video and the final product was amazing. Subbed
Buff out The Golden Gate Bridge... Sure... Hold my beer...
World’s largest 50-50 Shot... I’m pretty sure I saw that in an adult video.
They repaint the Golden Gate bridge on a constant loop.
Matt H. Man, painting it on a constant loop and they still haven’t figured out it’s being painted red not gold. Idiots 🤦♂️

I live next to this place. I can actually see the pima air and space museum from my house.
me too ! actually i saw u step out ur shower this morning
What are you... a relative of Sarah Palin? People that can see things from wherever they are... idiots...
Thats a big lie lmaoooo there isnt any houses even close enough to see that with the naked eye. The furthest you can see with the naked eye is 10 miles and thats with light amount of detail and color so salt flats you can see 10 miles in the middle of the ocean where no land is spotted which is around 10 miles out. So when you take all the color, detail, landscape and this place is a good distance from houses yeahhh. Nice lie but no cigar
SharpOperator #246 ummmm isn’t there like a housing complex right across the street? Pretty sure I remember seeing one.
Just checked Google Maps, you Sir... are wrong. There’s an elementary school right across the street and everything. There’s a whole park and baseball field too.

Larry, watching you detailing planes is great but you should definitely do a video on motorcycles, man! A lot of people here ride bikes and would like to see how you properly detail one. A naked bike - because of the intricate work they represent - would be perfection. Cheers.
+Ricardo Lourizela Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely keep it in mind. :)
Yep, this channel is lacking a proper bike job! I would love to offer my Ducati GT1000 for the sacrifice, but she's in Canada right now...
I never thought about bikes for some reason but I’ve thought of quads and shit lmao
Just finished watching it truly impressive how much work you guys did!
If I had to put a price on the job I'd say it was around $40 - 50K
Volunteer work
I'd say 20k on labor, but whats the cost for materials used.
$20,000 is only 40 dollars an hour so it’s pretty safe to say that was the minimum labor cost. My guess is probably around $6,000 in raw materials.
@@ryanschaff123 I don't know what detailers ask per hour in the US, but 40$ seems like a lot to me.
Going by his usual cost of products, figuring square footage, wheels, windows, I would guestimate $4.5 million
How many brave polishing tools gave their lives so this aircraft could shine again?

I remember seeing that 707 when I went to Pima in 2010. I was in 4th grade at the time and that airplane looked pretty rough up close. Glad to see it looking good again!
Was wondering where this video went... Thanks for re-uploading it.
Just incredible work. So glad you were able to take part in this project. You deserve this level of success!
Huge congrats and thanks to all involved giving that vehicle all the love it deserves! Do I even need to say how good your videos are....everyone knows it!!! Wow!
Great job and thanks for the all of the video editing!
+Jay Ceeroy Thanks!
what about the rest? Engine and other equipments?
10:50 - "...and this passed its first test, with flying colours."
I see what you did there.
YIKES! Unbelievable project: absolutely daunting. Teamwork is THE key to success. Bravo to all of you.
The detailing work was very well done and informative.
It was nice to see you give credit to all the professional detailers who helped on the project.
Our company was probably the last to paint that paint. I spend several years maintaining SAM fleet aircraft as a civilian contractor in Texas....Spent a lot of time polishing those engine cowls, nose ring cowl and leading edges...
Bro imagine having such a good reputation and then BOOM! Outta no where... Someone hits you up to detail their aircraft, that’s how you know you’ve made it. 🙏
Dude I discovered your channel in 2014 when I was detailing at a car Dealership. I was provided very minimal tools, chemicals, and compounds to use as the owner did not believe Detail was worth investing a lot into(crazy)... I learned so much from your videos that they promoted me within 3 months to manager Of the detail department where I was then able to convince the owner and GM of the importance of Investing in the Detail Department. I don't See detail professionally anymore but I still have a passion for it. I wish I had the opportunity to work with you and learn hands on from you. You're a genius in your field
What a great video ! Thanks for the history details. And thanks to all that participated! Great job !!!!
1000 bottles of AMMO later...
I wonder if the engines on this plane still run? Or can run? I really wanted to see the inside too.
I honestly feel like after a bit of work, they could run.

What I like about this video the most is the sense of collaboration between all you experts - no ego - just a learning opportunity for all involved including we viewers! Thank YOU!!
I've seen this video at least 10 times and I still get excited when it pops up in my recommended
My home town! In fact about 5 minutes from my house! Wonderful video! Keep it up!!
This should be a tv show
It looks beautiful! You all did a great job saving this historic piece!
I used to detail planes during the 1980's as a teen. There are several issues involved with detailing a Jet. One of the biggest difference is dealing with the rivets so you don't strip the paint off of them. You did a great job on this plane. This must have been a real trophy for your business advertisement.
Interesting tidbit of history. Jacqueline Kennedy is the one who chose the colors and design that is used for Air Force One.
Step 1: Build a large shelter so I can work out of the sun.
Or better to use deionized water
That's awesome and rewarding to help keep a plane with history looking good
Great job Larry and the Crew. Thanks for the video. Rick
15:34 The planes, the scissor lift, the flag... The truck! 'Meruca!
But he's not fat?
I live in Tucson. This place is awesome.
I just happened to see this video in one of your new intro's and had to find this video. All I can say is WOW!!! To go from beaten down in the sun to looking like it just came from the paint shop is amazing. Great work to the entire team that was involved in this project.
Great job, so cool! Awesome video, thank you for documenting it!
You didn't even clay it? ( lol...)
+letterpool haha!
does this plane actually fly, or will ever be restored to flying condition
Typically these aircraft are no longer certified to fly after a few years out of service. Assuming the engines are good, it certainly could be readied for flight but for the purpose of a museum it would be risky to fly it and the cost would be better spent restoring other aircraft.
thanks mate
Dear god, how many clay bars will he need to do a plane?!
Wow...what an amazing story and video! Wonderful job!
Also... looks like to me the museum should have a full time detailer on staff. Cleaning up those planes would save a fortune in painting expense and the better the planes look, the more visitors they museum would get.
Really appreciate you showing every member of the team with their company name, that's what makes a true team player... never makes it just about himself. Bravo on the job you guys did.
That was amazing. To see what all of you accomplished on that piece of history was really something.
Love seeing the SR-71 they have on display there. Did you check out the Titan Nuclear Missile Silo while you were down there?

I gotta know what the invoice on that was ... seriously think about it
I'd guess about 50 or $60,000. At the end he said over 500 man hours. Then add in supplies.
That invoice should be signed by every person involved and then framed.
As much as I enjoy detailing and all of Larry's videos, I am an even greater aircraft nut and aviation enthusiast. So when I saw an ammo NYC video on detailing a plane, of course I went crazy!
Incredible production..I had tears in my eyes when you spoke of the hostages..I remember posting for them almost every day at my school...well done.
Respect to all involved, this was a labour of love, and sure as hell must have been a real slog. It also demonstrates that the machine polishers used are tough bits of kit to stand that intense use.
This must make detailing a Car feel very Simple
Man i would call this torture lol
+Kevin Nguyen I have issues polishing a whole car properly sometimes. I can't even imagine having to polish a whole plane with a thick oxidised layer.
Yeah except I can't imagine how much he was paid 💵💵💵
Should have forced the Iranians to do it.
It's gotta be in your blood!!
used to have to do this weekly when in trouble on dyes afb
Thank God it was saved!!! What a classic beauty!
the videography on this is immense. Great job all round!
That cover in the engine is great the airplane makers should use it for a bird strike protection
I think that the cover is to stop people from throwing things like coins into the engines. A bird would rip right through that thin vinal netting. But that's just my opinion. :D
@@user-or1uo4ct9r You are correct, while the mesh used on static display aircraft will keep out nesting birds, wind blown debris and the things that stupid human may through. At takeoff speeds and higher even a small "soft" object like a bird would punch through the mesh and could cause the part of the mesh to detach and enter the engine, not good. That is the reason there are no protective devices on aircraft. At speeds above 100 mph the weight and restriction of a device capable of providing any real protection would be operationally unacceptable. Believe it or not it is easier and more effective the build engines capable of surviving all but the worse foreign object damage (FOD).
Think about the payment!
Thanks for this Video Larry - really enjoyed it!
The results are amazing. Great job
The movie had the facts distorted. It was the Canadian Ambassador who orchestrated the escape of the hostages. In the vintage photo, he's the guy with the curly hair and glasses going down the stairs. I'll think of his name. Believe me, it's true.
Now fire up those PW JTD3 engines and bring it back to life
The next level of detailing! This is MADNESS!
Wow i remember when Larry was just detailing regular car's. keep up the great job man!
It seems like most of the oxidation comes off by just rubbing your finger on it.

Stunning the old birds looking awesome. 4 days amazing
This was a both a treat and privilege to view. Great job, and terrific video. I've been out to Pima many times and have been inside this USAF 707. When I last saw the plane, the exterior was looking pretty ragged. All those years in the blazing hot Arizona sun had taken their toll. But you guys performed a transformative miracle. The plane looked awesome. Nice to see folks working together for a good cause. Again, a wonderful video. Thanks, I enjoyed it.
When I was active duty, my squadron and I were tasked with repainting 10 static display aircraft located next to our base. The aircraft consisted of B-52, B-1's, B-47, etc. We were thinking they wanted us to spray the planes, but noooo. We ended up painting them with latex paint in the 5 gallon pails purchased at home depot. Nothing like rolling on this paint with roller brushes! It took FOREVER and looked like absolute crap at any distance closer than 10 feet.
Oh nooooooo, a B1 covered in latex paint! The ultimate sin...like painting a Porsche with kids crayons!I Bet you hated every minute of It! Military spend 2 Billion each day,but no money left for a decent paint job!
could you imagine - plastikoting it!!
