John waters and divine were best friends. Edna was specifically written for Divine. Keeping the actor a male is a way of honoring that friendship.

Yes, Edna was originally the creation of Divine and I'd think without a doubt John Waters wants to pay tribute to that friendship, but Waters also made the comment that he was thrilled the "Hairspray" musical was a hit and if it should be performed in high schools in the future, it would finally give the more full-figured girl and the feminine gay kid the lead roles.

Harvey must be a lucky guy to co-star in Hairspray on Broadway! Luckily, I will have that pleasure of seeing him in his drag queen glory when he plays Edna again in NBC's upcoming production of Hairspray.

A man played Edna because she was played by a man, Devine, in the original movie.

Are you excited for NBC's Hairspray LIVE where he will once again play Edna as well as write the script?

I wish the 2002 version of hair spray was on Netflix (the one at the end nd of this) I would love to just research it over and over yet I can only find clips and songs from it on CZcams but not the full movie I just have to watch hairspray 2007 with john Travolta (leaving may 31st) and he's gold but Harvey is definitely funnier and my favorite Edna I've seen I've also seen Harvey in mulan one and two as Yao and in mrs. Doubt fire as uncle frank.

These theater people kill me. "It's not a drag performance." Well then, what is it? Harvey clearly States that John Waters did it to be subversive... In other words to buck the system and to irritate people who wouldn't agree with it. Anyone that watches this play and this performance and doesn't see a drag Queen must be completely blind completely blind and even more so deaf.
On the one hand you have Hollywood and theater types going on and on about the fact that there aren't enough good roles for women and yet you have a man playing a role that should be huge is the huge for any woman, And yet it is played by a man.
Don't get me wrong... I have no issue with drag queens and productions when and where they fit. A perfect example of this is towards song trilogy which is a story about a drag queen.
But this character is clearly meant to be AA heterosexual woman and therefore it should be played by a heterosexual womat a reschedule woman unless of course you intended to be farce which is clearly not the case.
It's just more of the hypocrisy of so called enlightened elites. Lady cousin would be perfect for this role and she should have played it from the word go.

Well Divine played the role like a woman would and Harvey did too so their so what’s the problem? There were serious themes presented and his casting lightened things up. If you don’t like it, don’t watch.

Drag and cross-dressing aren't the same. "These theater people" know the difference.
Drag involves exaggeration, for one thing, but the interviewer says he sees Harvey playing a woman. You might disagree with this perception but shouldn't accuse them of dishonesty.

Harvey was good in Hairspray but it was a vulgar, terrible show.
Way too loud and overdone with horrible songs. Marc Shaiman and his writing partner should just admit that they have no talent at all.
