  • Beloved writer/actor/Theater Talk guest Harvey Fierstein returns to the program as he begins preparation for the upcoming televised musical "Hairspray LIVE!" airing on NBC, December 7, 2016. Fierstein will star as "Edna Turnblad," the role he won a Tony Award for on Broadway (a character first played by the late actor DIVINE in the original 1988 John Waters cult film and reinterpreted by John Travolta in the 2007 movie musical).
Even before being cast in this TV adaptation, Harvey was hired to adapt the Broadway book into a teleplay (after his successful script adaptation of "The Wiz Live!" for NBC last year). Fierstein also recounts behind-the-scenes tales of the stage productions of "Hairspray," "La Cage aux Folles" and his biggest flop, "Legs Diamond" with the great Peter Allen.
    Taped: 09-09-16
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

Harvey should be in another hairspray! I just love how funny he was in hair spray live. I also think it would be really cool/funny if Tracy was the mom and Edna was the grandma and Tracy's daughter is like the main character like Tracy was.

His voice is almost gone. He's always had a raspy voice, but recently it's gotten to the point where you struggle to understand him.

Its interesting that both Fierstein and Bacall told the producers that the shows didnt work. Both Applause and Hairspray went on to win Best Musical and Best Actor/Actress for the respective performers.

I don't get why they ragged on the Hairspray movie. I think it was fine. Its one of my favorite musical movies. I loved all the big names in it. Nikki Blonsky killed it as Tracy. John Travolta wasn't horrible. He wasn't the best either. His scenes with Christopher Walken were hilarious. Queen Latifah's singing I know Where Ive Been moved me to tears. It's like people think if it's not the OG people from Broadway it's gotta be shit when it's not. Harvey is a legend but other people have talent too.

Vocal damage. When he was young, he was in a musical where stage manager made music louder that singer's voicers, so Harvey screamed to be heard. It damaged his vocal cords. You can look up his earlier interviews, it's as noticable then
