  • Harvey Fierstein, starring on Broadway in the revival of the hit musical, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, remembers writing the show's libretto and working with composer Jerry Herman plus director Arthur Laurents to put together the 1984 Tony-winning "Best Musical." He discusses his interpretation in the current production of drag diva, "Albin," a part he wrote, but never expected to play himself.
    Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
    The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
    The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

    An undeniable Legend. They say you should never meet your Heroes, but I would make an exception and take the risk in a fraction of a heartbeat when it comes to Harvey. He always comes across as such a beautiful soul, a smart cookie, and I would imagine he is an absolute scream to be around. Added to which anyone who comes up with "I am what I am." Cannot be all wrong, can they? Luv ya Harvey!

    Just in case he ever reads this I just wanted to tell Harvey that I absolutely love him. What an inspiration! I'm now 52 and still think he is wonderful!

    I absolutely love Harvey's approach to theatre as a group effort. He's absolutely correct and this is the attitude that is completely and utterly missing from most Hollywood movie productions. But when a film is a great ensemble effort, you can tell and it makes the movie great. Movie-makers could learn a lot from the theatre.

    I remember sitting in the audience in Los Angeles watching Torch Song Trilogy and not seeing anyone else in the theater except the characters and falling into the play. It was astounding.

    A major artistic loss on youtube is the fabulous harvey fierstein rendition of "I am what i am". a lot of people have done it, however he owns it! i am so grateful for the time it was on and the many many times we enjoyed it.

    As I worked in the theater for 40 years, I love this and am not belittling his work, but he didn't turn "A Streetcar Named Desire" into "Gypsy." The story is the same as it was in the original French play. He talks as if they conceived and wrote the whole thing from scratch.

    I loved the original French "La Cage aux Folles", which was an excellent, funny film. The stage play (musical) was horrible.

    • @nondescript2892
      @nondescript2892 Před 2 lety +1

      The french film was an adaptation of the original stage play...hated both,typical french neurotic farce without heart..the musical was a big improvement...but that is just my opinion

    Yeah, its a lovely, charming score, but there are ONLY 10 songs, each of which is heard AT LEAST TWICE, and without a truly sympathetic and accomplished actor-singer in the role of son, the show simply doesn't work.
