- In this video, I have visited Kaufman’s Army Surplus in Samson, Alabama (phone: 334-898-1770) and found a unique type of arctic canteen in a large box. The canteen is made of heavy gauge stainless steel with a wide opening and an easy-to-remove cap. I think this canteen would be very useful for bushcraft, as it can be used to boil water or melt snow over a fire. Watch me share my thoughts on its features and performance. Thanks for watching.

The canteen on their e-bay is unfortunately not going for the amount you mentioned. (Unless it is a fake Kaufmans ebay store)
Its going for say 94 dollars.
The canteen look more banged up.

I bought one of those canteens years ago for over $100 and sold it pretty quick as I couldn't find a matching cup. AFAIK, they only made about 1200 of them. You got a great deal there, Blackie.

I love surplus gear, definitely built to last.
If I'm in the Arctic I'm taking the biggest heaviest triple vacuum wall thermos, full of boiling cocoacoffee! If I'm out so long it freezes and busts I'll happily get another!
I've passed up the big heavy gauged stainless quart flasks at thrift stores because of the small opening would make it impossible to clean with a brush. This however looks like the finest canteen a military has ever put out. That opening allows you to see inside and clean easier when necessary. You wouldn't want it for anything but water, because it could get moldy. A brush and weak bleach water rinse repeat would sanitize it though.
I bought the last run of USA made stainless name brand thermoses with a similar sized opening. They've all been made in China since. They're Fully insulated for coffee during hunting season and whenever. Brushable all the way through. This canteen would heat water to make the coffee. Great find.

@@bootstrapperwilson7687 That's a good question. I was also wondering what vintage those were out of curiosity. I did find out that they are $30 .
My Aladdin Industries 1 quart thermoses were made in Nashville before outsourcing to China around 20 years ago. The history of the canteen will be much more interesting. Please post if you find out.

Havent tried one of these yet! Gonna check em out. Im up in Wisconsin, and i usually use the Canadian arctic canteens, which look like normal 1qt, bit different sized, but theyre a canteen shaped thermos. And they fit easy into alice pack outside pockets. Got a green one for warm water or pine needle tea, and a black one for coffee. Even have plastic cups to drink from. Never had one of them burst, but i do put liquids in hot, and stays hot for a good 6hrs at -20°F. Cant ask for more than that at those temps. Do wish they had metal cups though! Might see about buying the pathfinder cups, as those are bigger than normal 1qt cups.

Hey Blackie nice find. I don't know the exact dimensions of the bottle have a look at things like Gatorade bottle lids they might be the right size. The toggle idea was pretty smart I went out and bought a fish mouth spreader to hang my bottle over the fire.

Blackie, great find! I was at Kauffman 2 weeks ago, picked up a canteen cup and the "stove", i also grabbed a padded Alice pack hip belt that I needed.

Never seen those newer US arctic canteen kits, looks like a nice bit of kit!!! I'm sure that will do the business for you for many years.

Cool gear, Blackie. Our local surplus store got closed couple years back due to a tornado taking out the entire shopping center. Occasionally I can find gear in flea markets or yard sales. God bless.

You must have had some really hot water in that canteen…we used to fill ours with the coffee in the mess halls and those pots will scald you..never had an issue and just a little bleach inside with water to clean it up afterwards.

Dude that is so awesome, I bought a filter canteen a few months ago that looks like the green 1 L army canteens. Only on the bottom of the cap is a replaceable filter. Not only does it filter bacteria and protozoa but it also filters out heavy metals, pesticides and viruses. I would love to get one of those canteens and I could just screw that lid on that. It would be way more functional. Easier to clean and instill drink out of the same small top part. Which is like a plastic water bottle pop-up type.
I bet Chris Miller at assault gear would have some of this stuff too

They must have given you a special rate. I looked him up online and they self that canteen on eBay. Just the cup without the canteen or the cover is $44.95 plus $10 shipping and handling. And with the cover, it is $89 + $10. And this apparently has a 36 Oz u.s. Arctic canteen. However I did find a Stanley canteen that utilizes a very similar lid for about 20 bucks. I'll have to do some rooting around

These are the Arctic 36oz canteens. And they would definitely be worth 44 bucks if they had the Cup and the cover but those are a hundred bucks. I have one of the Arctic canteens that are they more common style. But I like this one better. The company you're talkin about is the only place I can find online that even carries them. But I guess it does make sense there's not a lot of call for Arctic gear. At least not yet anyway

Hey Blackie love all your videos, i know this is totally off subject but do you have any recommendations on cleaning a M51 feild jacket liner. I picked one up recently for a very very good price to use in my M65
woolite and baking soda will get that surplus smell out
So you're saying throw it in the wash machine even though it's wool? I know some guys say it's military put it in the wash machine other guys say dry clean only

I got a 1 gallon bottle, with the same bends shape in it , nice as a hit water bottle at night . Haven't checked it to see if pathfinder bottle lids would interchange with it yet . It has a leather strip backet , long over the shoulder straps too .
