    I AM ATHLETE | Season 3: Episode 19
Brandon Marshall and D.J. Williams welcome J.R. Smith and Antoine Walker to the show as they discuss basketball, HBCU’s, what really happened in the 2018 NBA Finals and much more. #JRsmith #HBCU #NBAfinals
The show opens up with J.R. talking about his time in Denver and what it was like playing with Carmelo Anthony and company. Antoine goes on to talk about the similarities between him and J.R. when it came to how they played the game. Antoine felt judged when playing for the Boston Celtics because of the way he celebrated and showboated around the court. He explains how people looked at him differently because of that and understands the weight J.R. felt from the public eye because he chose to do things differently when he played.
Brandon brings up HBCUs and asks J.R. to explain his thoughts on the topic. J.R. begins by saying how he went to a high school that was predominately white and explains that he never felt as if he was accepted and belonged. He goes on by saying how much he admires Deion Sanders and what he is doing at Jackson State. He explains how there needs to be more Brandon Marshall’s and D.J. Williams’ going to HBCUs to play football in order to see a change in popularity.
The conversation shifts to the 2018 NBA Finals as Brandon asks what really happened during the infamous moment when J.R. chose to hold the ball with seconds left in their tied game with the Golden State Warriors. He talks about the miscommunication between the team which ultimately led to that mistake. He opens up to talk about the struggles he faced mentally after that game with the world putting all the blame on him for what happened. He says, “That’s not my legacy…not if I have something to do with it.” He explains how the world gives you labels and creates your identity for you, when referring to his nickname of ‘Henny God’. He says, “I don’t even drink Hennessy.” He explains how he feels he’s been misrepresented but has finally come to peace with what happened back in 2018.

@@playmaker2121 Iamathlete has a training facility in Orlando, Fl. They invite athletes there to workout and learn, not just only about football. If you bumped into Brandon Marshall at a mall right now selling a product and had a good conversation with him, I guarantee he would pull out his phone and film a promo for you on the spot.
JR, is the hypocrite. Basketball players make SIGNIFICANTLY more money than football players, JR can probably buy a private jet. JR can sign a deal right now for 12m for a season coming off the bench and play till he’s 40; Brandon can’t even dream about putting pads on for an NFL team again.
Basketball players don’t make the physical sacrifices football players do and make WAAY more… but do absolutely nothing for their communities. Why is Shaq the only player offering an affordable shoe still after all these years? Basketball players are narcissistic scum bags who wait until the curtain calls to grow up.

I’m glad I got to hear him speak for himself because just like everyone else I had preconceived notions about him. This is the wavelength we all should be on but we’ve been programmed. Smith is one of the worst at doing it...I don’t mean to blast him for the people that’s going to read this and get their hurt, but yes I do mean to say it for the people that will listen…in sports he tear down more black people in then he should be allowed, but then when they respond he say they soft…ain’t nothing weaker then a man judging another man if you never been in his position, or without ever even meeting that man before.

@Barbara Burnett I agree this is a great episode! I disagree that saving money, investing money, creating residual income, creating businesses, etc... is strictly a "Euro-centric" concept. There are a whole lot of poor white people who don't know how to do these things either. Money management doesn't belong to one group of people.. but people of all races and ethnicities have to want to learn about finances... it is not something that is inherited unless someone is lucky enough to be raised by parents who are wise and willing to teach. Billy Carson is a very successful black man with a money mindset who is very passionate about teaching his kids about money management and creating generational wealth. This reminds me of Nick Cannon saying marriage is a "Euro-centric" concept because he has 8 kids from 5 different women. Marriage use to be a spiritual concept... now it is viewed as a state endorsed, social contract. Marriages are failing because we don't value the commitment the same.

I think this episode is one of the best ones, the knowledge JR dropping & his mindset... a lot more athletes (& others) need to open their mind up & really understand some of the things he's speaking on & take action. Now.. I know some already actually DO & are out there doing things. But I think a lot more athletes need to help their communities & their people. Getting all this money.. use it for good. Not clubs, not multiple cars, huge houses for no reason.. etc.. Use your heart & mind.! Y'all be wanting in the league to get out of the hardships where you come from... Be the one to set the stones to help others get out too. Not everybody can go to the league. Not everybody gets looked at. But YOU with the millions you've made.. you can come up with sources for others to have a chance. 💪❤ As always, LOVE.!
