I recall my first deployment riding out a monsoon in the South China Sea aboard the USS Mount Vernon (LSD-39) in 1979. A couple of us ventured down to the well deck to check vehicle tie downs. As we entered stern well deck I'll never forget looking forward towards the bow to see the front of this huge ship flexing up and down as it broke large waves. I found it rather unnerving that this steel ship seemed to be bending 3 to 4 stories (30 - 40 ' ) as if it was made of balsam wood.

Until fairly recently, oceangoing ships were designed almost entirely with survivability in mind. They had to be, since survivability was still an unsolved problem.
Nowadays, merchant ships are designed to carry as much as possible, as long as they meet certain minimum (very high, but still) criteria found to correlate with survivability in storms.
If all the money and effort which goes into building a modern chemical tanker, went into simply designing a vessel which would be stormproof no matter what, the modern ship could be built very stormproof indeed.
IOW: It's not immediately obvious that the older, wooden ships were THAT much worse in a blow, than modern ships loaded to the max and built to carry as much as they can get away with for a price. I'm not saying the new ones aren't ultimately safer. Just that the difference may not be as big as one would naively assume.

it's not nothingness down there. There is a lot of life down there. Life we know very little about. In fact we actually know more about our Moon (and we've only landed on the moon 6 times) than we do about the depths of our Oceans. The Ocean/s can go very deep. The Marianas Trench is at least 7 miles deep. That's 3 times deeper than where the Titantic sits.....Think about that for a minute. It took technology 72/3 yrs to find that ship. We have ships that sank way (hundreds of yrs) before that that we can't find. Our Oceans are enormous and a complete mystery. Respect them!

Water is heavier than it looks. After passing a big wave, if the front part of the ship is facing down and collides with the water, a big shock is generated.
In the average life of a ship for about 20 years, it is exposed to harsh salt water and waves countless times.

I tried once between Norway and Danmark. January 2005. Storm catched us in the middle of the sea on the way to Copenhagen. I realised how bad it was when we saw a transport boat in front of us . Everybody in the Crown Danmark name of the boat was crying and praying. Luckily for us it lasted few hours. But felt like a lifetime. We arrived safely next day. I never put my feet on a boat since. Respect for those who works on boats.

Same here.. The 15th of March this year I traveled from England to the Netherlands. I was afraid to fly so I thought traveling by boat was a calmer/safer option. There was a storm. And I never been that terrified. When we were at the middle of the sea/ocean the ship was going crazy. I was actually preparing to die. Thank god we all arrived safe. But.. I will never travel by boat again!

There's something chaotically beautiful about the sight though.

These massive boats look like toys on the sea!
