2:02 Fishing Boat Caught In Monster Waves 📍 Location: Bantry Bay, Ireland: The fishing vessel Santamar is struggling to make its way through high seas in terrifying waves during a storm near Ireland, while being filmed from the deck of the Grampian Avenger.
2:37 Merchant Navy Ship in a Storm Force 10 📍 Location: Bay of Biscay, France: A 12,000 tons merchant navy ship is being swept form one side to another in very long, deep swell. After the dangerous storm the crew noticed serious damages to the ship and its load.
3:27 Cruise Ship in Massive Storm and Waves 📍 Location: Cook Strait, New Zealand: A Passenger Ferry leaving Wellington in storm narrowly avoids rocks in very rough seas and big waves.
3:56 Ferry Leaving Wellington Heads Into Storm 📍 Location: Breaker Bay, New Zealand: 90 km/h winds, extremely rough seas and high swell the interislander MV Straitsman is no stranger to these conditions.
4:53 Chemical Tanker in Storm Force 12 📍 Location: Pacific Ocean: In the Pacific Ocean a chemical tanker battles some of the biggest waves ever seen while being caught in a storm force 12.
5:47 Ship in Storm in the Atlantic 📍 Location: Atlantic Ocean: Russian Captain Igor Aleksandrov and his crew facing a storm and massive waves with their ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite the remarkable size of the tanker, many waves are big enough to run over board.
6:48 Ferry Facing Storm and Rough Seas 📍 Location: Breaker Bay, New Zealand: It's not common for Cook Strait ferries to go out in conditions as rough as this however the captain faced the swell with terrifying results.
7:21 Tanker Nearly Capsizes in Storm 📍 Location: South Korea: At 10,000 tons this Chemical Tanker is thrown side to side as a fierce storm rages off the coast of South Korea and crew fearing she could capsize at any minute.
8:22 Ferry leaving Wellington in Storm 📍 Location: Breaker Bay, New Zealand: This New Zealand ferry is usually not sailing in seas as rough as this. Weather at the time was a 100 km/h southerly with high sea and southerly swell.
8:40 Ferry Ride into THUNDERSTORM on Baltic Sea 📍 Location: Baltic Sea, Germany: This bonus clip shows stunning lighting strikes and close calls in the Baltic Sea, as the cruise ship makes its way through a thunderstorm.

I recall my first deployment riding out a monsoon in the South China Sea aboard the USS Mount Vernon (LSD-39) in 1979. A couple of us ventured down to the well deck to check vehicle tie downs. As we entered stern well deck I'll never forget looking forward towards the bow to see the front of this huge ship flexing up and down as it broke large waves. I found it rather unnerving that this steel ship seemed to be bending 3 to 4 stories (30 - 40 ' ) as if it was made of balsam wood.

Until fairly recently, oceangoing ships were designed almost entirely with survivability in mind. They had to be, since survivability was still an unsolved problem.
Nowadays, merchant ships are designed to carry as much as possible, as long as they meet certain minimum (very high, but still) criteria found to correlate with survivability in storms.
If all the money and effort which goes into building a modern chemical tanker, went into simply designing a vessel which would be stormproof no matter what, the modern ship could be built very stormproof indeed.
IOW: It's not immediately obvious that the older, wooden ships were THAT much worse in a blow, than modern ships loaded to the max and built to carry as much as they can get away with for a price. I'm not saying the new ones aren't ultimately safer. Just that the difference may not be as big as one would naively assume.
Glad there’s a whole bunch of other people out there who are watching monster waves to relax 😅

@@yutahkotomi5156 just because they survived doesn’t mean they didn’t fear it. I’d imagine it’d be traumatizing as hell and probably cause more anxiety/fear.
it's not nothingness down there. There is a lot of life down there. Life we know very little about. In fact we actually know more about our Moon (and we've only landed on the moon 6 times) than we do about the depths of our Oceans. The Ocean/s can go very deep. The Marianas Trench is at least 7 miles deep. That's 3 times deeper than where the Titantic sits.....Think about that for a minute. It took technology 72/3 yrs to find that ship. We have ships that sank way (hundreds of yrs) before that that we can't find. Our Oceans are enormous and a complete mystery. Respect them!
