Russell is such a badass he is my favorite powerlifter to watch. He always looks like he is having fun and would rather be under a bar than anywhere else.
he’s also really cute!
I see he has dog tags on , which branch did he serve ?
@@rogersepeda4378 He didnt, they are a memorial to an old training coach I believe
@@THECALLOF241 ah ok . That’s cool . I figured if anything maybe marines .
Hmm I'd say behind a bar is his favourite place to be
I think this is also great for other compound exercises! Especially Deadlift. (hold it at the top instead of dropping it down immediately).
Don’t hold it for too long though cause once you drop the weight your blood pressure will drop a lot which could cause you to faint
Yes it is!

When I trap bar dl I like to walk to one end of my gym turn around and set it down.
Does this also work for bench?
The man that made me actually like leg days 💪🏼
What's his name/page?

For 4 seconds he told the bar "I'll be back."

I was doing that with 405 on the squat. I would load 405 and hold for several seconds to train my CNS. No squatting. When I did my 1RM at the beginning of January, I did 405. First time hitting that since 2007.
Wow I’ve always done this for my lifts never knew it had a purpose
Ive always naturally done it too and I knew it felt right to do and now I know lol
Yea I thinks it’s the same feeling as watching a home run ball after you smashed it. Like I’m gonna enjoy this for a second
Try this too: before you get into your working sets, put 10% more weight on the bar than you're programmed for and do a couple box squats. It'll prime you well for the lower weight working sets.
So if my max is 60 kg I should do 10% more on the bar as my first set ?
@@ramon9367 no, he’s speaking of the working set weight when he mentioned “programmed”. For example if I have in my program or “working set” for it to be 200 lbs then what I would do before actually getting into my working set is do a couple squats of 220 since “20” is 10% of the weight that I’m about to be working with.
This what helped me get to 315 in my front squat a couple years back. When 295 was my max I would hold it for a little bit and do 315 holds just so my body would get comfortable with the weight….eventually I didn’t feel like I was fighting for my life holding the weight lol
I like how that spotter was there like he was gonna be able to do anything.

Its not the spotters job to move the entire weight for him. Russel would still be pushing a lot of the weight if he failed. Most likely if he failed he would just leave jt on the safety rack. Also when reracking its important to have a spotter so you dont miss the rack.
That spotter should not be there. He could only make matters worst by not lettinf him bail
I always figured they were waiting for the bar to stop bouncing 😂
Wow this is good to know! When I first started lifting heavy it was shocking to your system to lift close to your limit. I found myself saying the dumbest things like damn that is heavy but I think something like this might help me understand better what that weight really feels like and not experience that shock

Many years ago I remember hearing something similar with the bench. I'm definitely going to start doing this for my bench and my squat. Thanks for video!
Y’all are really providing such valuable information much love
I do this with the final rep of my heavy deadlift set.
After watching one or two clips of your channel squat university i loved this channel
I think your explanations are best .
These are the type of tips that helped me get stronger on the big lifts, these small things make huge differences
im doing this next time
Perfect.
That feeling you have when you put the new heavy weight on your body, whether it’s bench squad, etc., let’s your body know what it feels like!
Awesome
I've always done this had the same thoughts about it aswell! I started doing it with deadlifts, you might not be able to deadlift 400lbs from the ground but raise it up and lift it 2-3 inches and hold it aslong as you can.
Thx for being nice and not yelling at me like I'm an idiot 🥰
Damian Pezzuti does this and I always thought it was just to recover before re-recking without dying, nice to know this
That is so smart!
Brother is a monster blessed by our GOD, salute stay safe and enjoy yourself

You’re knocking it out of the park with these shorts. Keep up the good work.
I do this but never knew this was the benefit. It's more a mental thing for me.
Great job brother!!
Same reason why I did 5 second pauses On my bench press got my body use to it.
I legitimately never thought of this!! I’m going to try it out next time!!
Russ is that DUDE 💯
Smart man!
MM!!! You learn something new everyday. I think I'm going to half to give this a try
Excellent tip! Smart training.
Russell is epic great, luv watching the best
Appreciate this
The spotter was praying he doesn’t go for a second rep.
Love it. Efficiency can be badass!
Thanks king💪🏻💪🏻💪🏽💪🏽
Dude hit 755, he can do whatever he wants with the bar.
Great advice!
Smart man!😮
Mad respect
Gonna start doing this
I've been doing this for years and never knew it was a thing. I simply did it for that exact reason; to let my body know the weight
Awesome concept
Love holding deadlifts at the top after a heavy single.
That's brilliant. I don't do huge weights, but when I hit my last rep I usually take it alot slower
Thanks for the tip 👍
"I WANNA HOLD IT!!!!!" -Kirk Karwoski
I did walk outs before my last couple squat sets today and tbh it makes the actual squat feel way easier. The weight feels lighter than the walkout
Bruh first just seeing that weight makes my legs ache because I don't think I could even unrack that weight...yet...so this man is a complete monster and I hope I can do that one day. And also not gonna lie, that pause at the end is definitely I am gonna try and never really thought about that
That is great advice thank you
Crazy weight very strong
“I WANNA HOLD ITTTTT!!!!”
That is so fucking interesting actually, def gonna do this when I lift heavy from now on
Impressive! I do the same when I am doing heavy deadlifts. I hold it for a few seconds before releasing it.
This is really good info
Another great time to do this is on your last rep of your top/heaviest set of deadlifts. Training without straps of course. Build some deadlift specific grip strength.
wow, he is very strong. Maybe I'll try this method next time I do squats. Also does anyone else struggle with re-rack? I get pain in my shoulders when I start to move forwards.
Beast mode
Yeah buddy!
Very interesting I will try this
Holy shit that's almost 800 solid ass pounds
The things I learn randomly thanks to shorts
That power rack looks badass
Props my guy props
Been doing this for years. I can confirm .
"I wanna hold it!" I wanna hold it!!!"
Imma try this out
That’s actually very interesting!
he sounds like a freaking chad bro
That sounds like something I'm gonna do
I’m in a commercial gym these days so I no longer do it but trust what he says.It really does make a difference with time and if people didn’t judge so much and annoy you and come up to you for ego lifting I’d be doing heavy static holds all the time
I'd like to see what this looks like for other compound lifts
MES (minimal essential stress) smart training tip🤓
Good to know
I do this with any movement as well always try some thing heavier and drop set to your weight of choice and it’ll feel so much lighter
Watching that lift made my back crack
My back hurt just watching this 😬
My guy is over here squatting grizzly bears
Makes sense!
Makes sense.
Funny your channel said not to breathe the way that guy did before squatting 750lbs. Yet here he is
SNAP CITY COMING
I really wish I knew this in highschool. There's alot of science coming out with strength training and calithstenics witch is really crazy to think about. I get it strength training is way less time consuming but having that type of flexibility and core strength really takes off so much tension on your body
Wow this is really interesting
That’s fantastic, thanks for the tip. I’ll try this next time I struggle to squat a plate 🗿
The power racks the go for gaining strength quickly doing partial,s.
Proper shit man
If you see someone smile after squating twice their body weight, bro run
bro thats like three times 😂
I used to think he did this for comp specificity
It actually is a mental/physical thing to allow your body to hold higher weight… even if you are just holding… it can help a ton.
he is not wrong. On my 6 week cycle ( programme not roids) I will attempt a 1RP on major lifts that last week. the week before I will rest slightly over the 1rm static holds for a few seconds a few reps.
It’s shocked that I didn’t know this but I did it subconsciously
Chuck Oglethorpe did this well before . West side barbell
I guess this is my sign to do more pause reps in general rather than rushing through reps
Additionally, if you're planning to compete pausing some time after the squat will create a habit to wait for a RACK command. In my first competition I was so full of Adrenaline that I forgot I had to wait for that command. The habit of holding saved my white lights.
I always laugh at these spotters. When you're spotting somebody of this caliber pushing the envelope to this level you're just standing there praying nothing goes wrong.
I do the same thing on OHP
Didnt u have a vid talking about not taking a breath that raises your shoulders and yet here we are...
I'm going to try it. But it seems mentally challenging
