  • I needed to install some 60cm width aluminium windows blinds in a gap that was less than 60cm so needed to trim the slats using a blind slat cutter. They were also too long so had to remove some slats and trim the blind ladder strings.

      I always find it hard to finish off jobs completely, I still haven't installed the kick panel on my laundry

    Thank you for this video... I needed to reduce the width of new v.. blinds and wondered how the blind trimmer worked- and what sort of finish after cutting this video gave me the confidence to go buy one and give it a go ....thanks RS.

      Thanks, just remember to cut one slat at a time and watch for the sharp bits and take equal amounts off each side so they look equal compared to the vertical strings (unless it is just 5-10mm you are taking off in which case you wouldn't see the imbalance)

    I hope I can find that cutting tool. I have a bunch of old blinds that I didn’t throw out, I’m thinking of cutting them and spray painting them and using them in my basement Reno project. Thanks. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

      Because the tool cuts a rounded edge in the corner of slat, the cutter would work on a specific width of slats, usually they would be sitting along side in shops that sell the aluminium/aluminum/plastic blinds. You could always try ebay to see if they have a cutter that would match the width of your slats. Or you could always put them outside of the opening so they overlap the window opening, rather than inside the window frame.

    Nice to see what tool is used to get great cut blind slats but what to do with the aluminum top and bottom to get an over sized blind to fit?

    • @RandomSmith
      @RandomSmith  Před 4 lety

      To fit a blind you need to pick one that is the approximate width. This allows you to hacksaw say, 5 cm off each side in the area where there is no winding mechanism. This gap will vary from blind to blind. Usually there are plastic end caps that will allow you to hide any less than perfect cutting.

    so how did you cut the top bracket and the last thinker slat?

    • @RandomSmith
      @RandomSmith  Před 3 lety +1

      Luckily I didn't need to cut them, I just took the plastic covers over both ends. But since they are covered by plastic bits the finish of the cut doesn't need to be great, so use a metal hacksaw to trim an event amount of material from both ends, or if the amount you need to take off is small (

    Where did you get the cutter from please .? I've bought 2 from dunelm in the last 12 hours & they've both broke on first press!!!! Feel I must be doing something wrong .....with something you have made look so simple !!!

      I am in Brisbane Australia and got them from Spotlight - sells blinds and other manchester type item. Was just a cheap one, can cut one slat at a time, make sure the previous offcut is removed before going on to the next. Most DIY shops or places that sell blinds would have them. Dunelm cutter looks fairly similar in operation to mine. These work on a principle similar to scissors, so you know how sometimes you sometimes have to hold scissors in a certain way, perhaps something like that - but I doubt that is the cause. My slats were aluminium and quite thin. If you have a spare slat - maybe you could take it into the shop and get them to try it on one before you get a new one. Thickness may play a part in how easy it cuts. Maybe try B&Q for an alternate one.

    How do you cut the mechanism holder at the top?

    • @RandomSmith
      @RandomSmith  Před 3 lety

      I used a metal hacksaw. Blinds usually come with a little plastic end that will cover the cut to make it look neater. You can only usually cut off a few centimetres. Just watch you don’t bend the slats while doing this, very easy to bend them while keeping the slats out of the way.

    what is the tool you have used for cutting?

    • @RandomSmith
      @RandomSmith  Před 3 lety

      It is a plastic or aluminium blind trimmer. It is fairly cheap as tools go. There different ones for different slat size. Some might only do plastic or aluminium blinds, some do both. . They only cut slats that are about 0.5/1mm thick. They put a rounded corner on the cut so that the slat is not sharp. It’s is a cross between a guillotine and a hole punch. www.spotlightstores.com/nz/curtains-blinds/blinds/indoor-blind-accessories/aluminium-slat-cutter/BP80461199 available from shops that sell blinds, usually sits next to them on the shelves.

      I bought mine from Spotlight in Australia. Any place that sells blinds will sell them. Usually in the same section as the blinds. The cutters need to match the depth of the slat because it puts a curve on the end so there are no sharp ends. Cut them one slat at a time and if the blind is being reduced in length- removing slats, remember to keep them as spares.
