Is it me, or is Ringo's drum playing phenomenal in the song?
Ringo himself said this is his best drum work, since the song was recorded at like 1,5x the speed and then slowed. Therefore, he had to play ridiculously fast and precisely
its not just you!
It's very sharp
Pretty impressive drumming yes 😊

Ringo's drumming and Paul's basslines are heavenly.
Hence why they are still alive

It sounds like taxman but in a different key
❤
Especially considering it was actually played much faster than we hear it here, then slowed down. :)
What I noticed too...and the psychedelic sound....Ringo is amazing and says this is his FAVORITE song to play.
Most important band in pop/rock history, period.

For 99% of bands, this would be their best track. For The Beatles, buried as a B side that didn’t even make it to an album.
Yeah, that says it all
Simply incredible when you think about it from that angle!!
They not included songs from their singles in the albums
For 99% of bands, All Things Must Pass, Hear Me Lord, and Isn't It A Pity would be their best work. For the Beatles, it wasn't even worth their time to record them
That one came of 45 you know what I mean
Ringo was recently quoted as choosing this as his favorite Beatles song. That's why I'm here.
Hahhah me too..
I can see why. Ringo’s drumming is phenomenal on this song.

He said: "I feel as though it was someone else playing." "I was possessed!"
@@kubadzejkob332 so interesting. He may have been. Sometimes the creative flow is so powerful it's as if the artist is just the conduit for something bigger coming through. Makes me wonder about the afterlife and if artists who've passed on can re-enter temporarily while the living are so powerfully engaged.
I personally feel this is an underrated masterpiece. It's one of my top favorites of theirs. It's just so good.
'Under-rated?'.......people have been raving over this track for well over 50 years.

This would have fitted so well on Revolver
i think it’s great as a single tbh
LP D'A even if the time wasn’t right, this feels like a perfect song for Rubber Soul to me
Well it was recorded during the Revolver sessions.
What?? This song is such a Rubber Soul song
Fabrício Núbile I always see rubber soul and revolver as a double album. They’re very similar
This is where The Beatles started to turn the corner, moving from pop to a more experimental approach. They had reached a level of confidence that enabled them to make music for themselves rather than trying to please the record labels. This is where they went from incredible to, well, beyond.
I'm 65 years old and incredibly , only heard this song for the first time two weeks ago. From the very first listen it struck me as a masterpiece. A truly superlative recording. The first thing that grabs you by the scruff of the neck is Ringo's drumming. The next thing that hits you is Paul's bass.. But that's not all. This song gives and gives. A masterful performance justifying their position as the greatest band of all time.
You only heard this song recently!?! 😳
@@lindaslattery8341 this song isnt that well known among the general public
What! Your LAME!
Welcome brother
Where have been the last 65 years? I heard this when I was 8 or 9 years old. My older brothers and sisters had about every 45rpm and album put out.
This is the perfect rock song... John's haunting vocals, George's understated guitar, Paul's incredible bass lines, and Ringo's virtuoso drum work.
Damn skippy!
Incomparable.
What did you smoked?
it's one of the best Beatles song for their individual contributions
It is! It's a lovely pop song masking a lovely hard rock song.
Ringos drumming here is simply outstanding.
He has said it's the Beatles track that he is most proud of.
this and Tomorrow Never Knows are probably his best performances
He was unbelievably hot that year.
I keep hearing that...what is so special about his drumming here? I mean, it’s good but i don’t get the “his best drumming” stuff.
I read an article by drum session legend Kenny Aronoff in which he said he used to make fun of Ringo's drumming until some magazine asked him to do a breakdown of this song. It blew Kenny's mind that Ringo never repeated a part in this song - every verse is different, as is every chorus. In effect, it's a 3-minute drum solo carrying the rest of the song.
What is so magical about The Beatles is that while all the pieces of what they did could be found in classical music, blues, jazz, early rock, and elsewhere... there was NO ONE who could have put them all together like that and made such shockingly original music all things considered. The Beatles were - and still are - unbelievable. And as a drummer I can't ever take my eyes off that lovely, minimalist kit of Ringo's with the iconic logo... the ultimate drumset for the ultimate time-keeper...
i agree ..
Agree!!
Also as a fellow drummer, I want to state that Ringo is a master at staying in his lane and never “over-drumming” the songs.
And his Sound, his tuning, his approach is as unmistakable to the ear as any other considered great drummer.
Sounds like something that just came out last week from some new indie band. Unreal. What a band.
Right?? Timeless...
Exactly what I was thinking!
Ringo's drum.. Paul's bass.. John's voice.. WOW!!
Don't forget George's coolness
George’s guitar is great in this just year how it blends
John did have a great voice. It was a very distinctive voice, unique, pleasant. I wish he could have kept it together. But in the end, JOhn had a tough early life it took its toll in his later years. John gave us a lot. I wish he had been able to give us even more. But he did give us a lot, as half of the greatest writing team in history. Of course, Music did not really get going till the 50s and the Beatles "Revolutionized" it. Love the Beatles.
Don't forget georgr
George’s riff?
The perfect Beatles song. Ringos drumming and Paul’s bass are unreal.
Paul is actually playing the riff he will later use on "Taxman"...

Their royal albert hall performance is incredible, johns singjng at that gig was otherworldy and he didnt break a sweat
Don't understand why John hated his own voice ... His singing is thrilling, especially in this song.
He was an immature narcissist with a touch of the egomaniac thrown in.
A sonic marvel. Everything is amazing: Ringo's drums, Paul's bass, George's guitar, John's voice. A musical masterpiece.
Who says Ringo can’t drum? His drumming in this song is spot on.
nobody says that
Anyone who says that is a moron
I've seriously never understood why everybody always says that. It seems like it's changing. He's a great drummer even technically, not to mention musically -- and before you think about the historical context. I always think about the figure of the _drummer_ in rock before the Beatles: it basically didn't exist. Ringo created it.
Listen to *ANY* Beatles number and the drumming will be exactly right for it. Ringo's expertise was in judging what the song needed and then playing it without over-elaboration.
Ockham's Razor states that what can be done with less is done in vain with more. Personally, I agree.
Always spot on
Every Beatles video:
Paul: Always looking like he's actually enjoying himself.
John: Occasionally cracks a smile.
Ringo: Concentration/Boredom.
George: Always looking like he wants to be somewhere else.
George’s smile is the rarest but the best
Correct - except for perhaps their earlier vids where Paul and John are consistently giggling with each other.
@Caleb Reader ikr? That’s why I love the Let It Be album cover! George has a big smile in that photo!
@@nightshadespectre409 Indeed. Of the four, he's got the best pic on the cover.
George really is somewhere else!
Lyrics dont normally mean all that much to me, but "Can you hear me? That when it rains and shines, it's just a state of mind," sticks with me for whatever reason. It's my favorite part of the song
Thats because you can hear him. Now what is he saying?
John's reedy voice Can you heeeeaaaar me. LOL. The whole band kills here.
It's the yin yang❤
ACID IS BEAUTIFUL
That's the key line for sure
The Best there is, the best there was and the Best there ever will be
This song showcases the best talent of all four Beatles. George's lead guitar sound more like church bells than a guitar. Paul's bassline supplements the melody beautifully. Ringo's best drumming ever, and he does it so effortlessly. And John? Just the greatest words, melody, and performance. Perfection.
Well said..
@@MFclips Paul's bass is amazing on this and many other songs. They had a synergy that only happens once in a great while 🎧
Incredible songwriting from John combined with incredible playing, singing and production. Perfection on all accounts
You forgot the vocal harmonies. Not a sour note, which was something the Hard Days Night era Beatles couldn't quite get right.
People need praise Lennon’s rhythm guitar playing. The man had a fantastic ear for tone.
I may be stuck in a time warp, but 2021, Beatles are STILL the best ever.
Good place to be stuck.
Started listening to them in the mid 70s (born in 1966) and never stopped.
Stay in that time warp-their music was and still is the best
nope... you're right as rain...
I will never say that they are the best ever, because who am I to say what the future lies ahead (one hopes better things), but I can definitely say that they were without a shadow of a doubt the best artistic act that ever happened in the 20th Century. Nobody can change my mind about that. No other artist or collective could ever top it, no Stanley Kubrick, no Francis Ford Coppola, no James Joyce, no Virginia Woolf, no Gabriel García Márquez, no Vincent Van Gogh, no Shigeru Miyamoto, could ever afford the sheer massiveness of The Beatles. They are for the ages. And don't get me wrong, those are some of the best artists of the 20th Century, but while they might go out out of style (and they do I guarantee you make you raise a smile), The Beatles is something I'm so clearly sure will outlive any other artistic device ever conceived it makes me believe there's a God out there.
Can't believe how easy they make this look. Staggering talent.

The Beatles 1966 songs like Rain, Taxman, And your bird can sing etc, had a huge influence on New wave bands in the late 70s like the Jam and XTC and 90s Brit pop bands like Oasis. The imagination and creativity the Beatles got out of just guitar, bass, drums, and backward tapes in 1966 was astonishing.
And broadly speaking, in American rock
Not sure about XTC but The Dukes of Stratosphere carried this off perfectly 😊

They make everything look so effortless…
At one point, I feared the Beatles will be forgotten one day. But like Beethoven and Mozart, their music is forever immortal
Not anytime soon. My 3 year old is a big fan.
I think the fact they they are as popular as ever over 1/2 a century later and still so beloved and respected confirms it will be a really long time before they are forgotten. Ringo sounded as if he had 4 or 5 floor- toms and snares ....great performance
I recall an interview he gave in which he was asked which Beatles track was his best work, and he said this one. He told us that he knows his own style well, but that this number was almost unrecognizable to him, and that he didn't think he'd be able to reproduce it. One of the things that makes the Beatles so infectious is because they are always smiling and genuinely having such a good time together.
They were born to play together. When John met Paul and they discovered they had very similar musical tastes, they developed a wordless language. As they began to try to write their own songs, each became familiar with the process the other employed, and in their secret language of feel, they were able at times to finish each other's sentences, metaphorically speaking. But songwriting was something they felt obligated to do. Playing live together was more of a compulsion.
In this video's case, you mean stoned on some great weed.
No matter which one came up with the song . they all bought in with their best effort . That's strong .

I swear to god this is one of the most impressive and complete compositions ever created. This really showcases every Beatle at their very best, not only as individuals but as a unit. From the amazing, innovative bass-line to the rampaging, flow-state drumming to the droning, dreamlike guitar rift and of course the poignant lyrical skill of Lennon that pulls you into a world that you can REALLY visualize. On top of that, when everything’s put together it blends so seamlessly, like a perfect puzzle; much like the vocal harmony that is literally like crack to my ear. It’s like the whole song is in a perfectly balanced counterpoint between all instruments and voices.

Micky Adams good job
One of the greatest B-Sides of all time.
This is just a great song. Regardless of anything. Genre, band, era, anything. Great tune.
In my opinion the Beatles are the greatest band in history. They didn't just do one or two new things. They did maybe 70 new things. Perhaps I am wrong. Well, I can live with that.
not wrong... 😉
No, it's a fact...
There is no opinion on the matter it’s just factual no other band even comes close which is crazy seeing that other bands like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin are great but if you disagree let me ask you this …. What other band mates sing in those two bands besides nick jagger and Robert plant ?
Great bands but when you look at the Beatles you have 4 Huge stars 3 if you want to be realistic and not count ringo
@@cjsmith4152 4
@@cjsmith4152 Listen again to the drumming just on this track, and remembering that he was brought in because he was the most professional of them all too....
I remember when this first came out...the end of the school year in 1966 - the 7th grade for me. "Paperback Writer" was on the A side of this single and was a great song. But I remember liking "Rain" a lot more just because you could distinguish every instrument, every lick, every nuance in the recording of the song, something that was completely new at the time. We went crazy over Paul's bass line. Before this, the bass in "pop" music was never this out front. And Ringo's drums were also brought up in the mix. Plus the guitars were so bright and crisp sounding. Superb vocals. My friends and I would air-guitar, air-bass, and air-drum this song over and over and over again. And we loved singing along with this, especially when you came to the ending line, "Can you heeeeeeeear mmmmmee." Phenomenal song.
Contex is everything!!!
Not pop . It’s rock
I was 8 when this came out, but I do remember it. I remember thinking that I'd never heard anything like it before. A song about how people ACT? Every other rock song I had ever heard was about girls, cars, girls, dancing, girls, etc, and an odd Meaningful Folk Song or two.
@@thehunter3387 it's not today's pop, it was pop when it came out
I was 12. I thought it should have been the A side. But then it wasn't even on any album, just a single. Interesting ,though, how Paul does a non love song like Paperback Writer, and Lennon pens Rain. Neither wrote a love song. I miss those days.
As an example of psychedelia, I think this maybe tops anything even on Pepper. Massive favourite of mine. John's clearly loving it, too. ❤
Gotta be one of their most underrated songs
Nope. Don’t even try to call any beatles song underrated. Like dude, it’s got over 15Mil views…
Rain and Paperback Writer signaled the psychedelic shift in everything. If you were old enough then, their debut on the radio was mind blowingly cool; you knew THIS was something brand new and revolutionary. The whole feel and sound was astounding, fresh and moved the human race forward a step or two and made you more aware. THANKS.
To think back then that teenage fans were listening to this single having no clue that the album was going to be completely the same tectonic shift of the music landscape. They literally changed the way you look at studios. Before, it was to go in and play your instruments.... after that album the studio itself was seen as an instrument. Stunning.
Too young to understand or appreciate in 1966 yet soon after loved the blazing white hot guitar of Writer. Rain took longer for me to catch on yet once I did I always crank it up!
@@Lmclean89 I just loved it at 15. The lyrics did it for me
I've never considered either song to be psychedelic.
Don’t forget Blue Jay Way. Now that’s psychedelic.
When your b side is better than 90% of other bands a material
The flipside to The Ballad Of John & Yoko, Old Brown Shoe, is another amazing B side that people might not know about.
100%
I Am The Walrus, Rain, Revolution and Don't Let Me Down were songs that easily could have been a TOP20 song for ANY other band. For the Beatles only were B sides.
100%. This ws always better than Paperback Writer but probably a bit too extreme for 1966
Plus all the stuff Lennon and McCartney wrote for other singers in the 60s - some of the latter's best records!
Paul was and is a workaholic which is why they were so prolific. When virtually every song in the top 40 is a beatle song for years its easy to miss a song like this
Ringo's drumming is so great here
"We're all John Lennon fans." - George Harrison
@blue heeler lol, which "crappy ballads" do you speak of...Let It Be...Long and Winding Road..cause those are considered among the greatest songs ever recorded..and u sound very silly because the "originally Beatles sound" was 50% Paul 50% John, and Paul can rock just as hard if not harder...so ur evaluation falls flat on it's face
Edit:Thanks for all the likes, if you like Hip-Hop, R&B some Soul, maybe you'll like my music.
blue heeler you are a fuckin idiot hahahaha
@@loganlockyer2651 honestly true
The Beatles never would've been as big as they got without the 4 as a whole. Also, George held the band up at the end IMHO. Which George? Both of them.
paul said it himself, he's the #1 john lennon fan and that he's always loved im' and he still does
It's so beautiful to see the 4 of them together playing a song. The magic is there. Will never end. It's there in the Beatles.
They're why I picked up the guitar 30 years ago. Lennon is why I play rhythm guitar. As a player, you long for the magic and camaraderie they had. I don't see that with other bands to this day.
They had a collective genius.
@@joellebrodeur1015 Magic and camaraderie? Ever heard of Face to Face, or for that matter, even Green Day? Mind you, different style of tunes...
Yes I agree and awesome group ☺️
John nails it and is at the height of his coolness. Look at how cocky (in a good way) he stands there and belts this tune out.
This song could have been a hit in the 90's alternative era.
Just another example of Ringo's impeccable timing and easy style.
The drums in this song are just phenomenal! Ringo is truly one of the best drummers of all time!
Phenomenal? Now look at the 0:44 mark. Ringo drags the transition too long and isn’t entering the first beat with the rest of the band. In 1971 he couldn’t play the part Quincy Jones expected from him and was substituted by a double. So I don’t know what phenomenon are you talking about…
@@sevchyk it's not a bug, it's a feature.
@@TolgaDarcan Do you really think that he made that awkward dragging deliberately?

The bass is just incredible
It's funny how a song that was a "B-side", and not one of their biggest hits, can be such a great example of their sheer genius.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps was another B-side that has become a long-overdue classic.
@G Galilei thanks to Maccas piano
Paul's bass here is godlike. Damn.
He never fails to amaze me. 🎻🎸
And it only got better when I heard it with headphones for the first time.
True
I was 12 when this came out on 45. I played this song over and over again. I was literally hypnotized. But I couldn't find another 45 to replace it after I wore it out. Sigh. Had to wait over 3 years before it appeared on the "Hey Jude" album in 1970. That was a LONG time to wait for a teen. Now I'm old...but still am hypnotized by this song. I literally will love it until the day I die.
@@Cryo837 I discovered this song at 12, too!! But it was on my Dad's copy of Hey Jude. This was 1993. Amazing hypnotic analog vibrations. Thanks for sharing!
It's the start of summer here in India, and this high temperatures and humidity had made me realise how much I loved Rain, sitting here patiently for that rain while listening this song, rain rain rain....
As a kid without his own stereo, making me reliant on radio or visiting other people, I couldn’t believe this wasn’t getting radio play. I was mesmerized by that sound that wasn’t really emulated until Cream. Ringo’s drumming is almost as out there as Ginger Baker, and where did that bass line come from? This song may have been the watershed into psychedelia. Controlled and focused and yet dreamy in a way that most later "psychedelic" bands couldn’t pull off.
I don't even have words to describe how I love this song.
Just say great
I know how you feel Paul - and you wrote it!

Paul's bass playing given me goosebumps in this song . Every note sounds great.
How have I been listening to them for 30 years and never managed to hear this song? It's fabulous! Thanks Chapterhouse
Just concentrate on that bass line.....

Just love to see them smiling at each other.....so much fun
Ringo's drums are what stands out the most
Very underrated. One of, if not THE best Rock & Roll Drummers of all time.
I agree not fancy like Keith Moon and others. Ringo was a genius complementing the bands music. Definitely one of the best.@@ladamyre1
