"please no more war" not sure how you can expect anything more from him without risking the safety of his family. there is no freedom of speech there like we enjoy in North America... you can't just go speaking out (or changing social media profiles) without facing consequences...especially when you are in the public eye like OV.

What a difficult spot for this guy. He is high profile and Putin has embraced him. His family lives in Russia. Id imagine at a time like this, dissent against an authoritarian capable of disappearing his family vs pleasing hockey media and maintaining his career is a hell of a predicament. It’s so sad how binary simple people see this situation. Especially after the 20 yr, unjust war, the USA just ended vs a bunch of people in a desert. Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if the mindless hordes demand Russian Americans be interned, just like the Japanese in WW2

Its a tough spot for OV. He doesn't want the Kremlin to hurt his friends or future for talking anti-war. He knows they will seek revenge. His fear is valid. Thats why the fans, media and Hockey HoF should ban him for life from the Hall. No warning, just do it. Then, new support for OV will kick up, the Kremlin will call him and say "Give them what they want, say it, its OK Alex, thank you for loyalty" ... then Ovechkin will denounce the man who caused the war, and young hockey fans will hear this good message and the future will suck less. But we have to ban him.

    • @jasonnacci4091

MLB had no problem banning Pete Rose for life, while in the Living Legend stage of his career. All he did was gamble on baseball. He hurt the integrity of the game. He was NOT providing social cover for a war apparently EVERYONE is against, except the Russian Govt. *Its OK to keep politics out of sports ... but respect for human life must come before sports*, both in deed, and in word. The NFL got it right in deed when they cancelled the game after Hamlin was hurt bad. Uglier injuries than that happens to civilians in Ukraine nightly. Hockey should feel which way the wind blows and get vocal ASAP.

He can’t say anything about how he truly feels, his family and friends would suffer the backlash in Russia. Russia is not a democratic country, it never has been. Putin is a former Soviet KGB Agent, so for all intents and purposes he still is a man of the Soviet System. Only corrupt, crazy and nasty people like Putin himself will mentally survive. Ovi isn't grateful about the chances he got to be world famous in a world wide sport. Russians will be excluded internationally on many levels, the new KGB will be controlling everybody and surveillance cameras all over the country are just a few preposterous changes, that will come about.
