In the 1800s, Ralph Waldo Emerson said you didn't need revelation, only contact with nature, to become aware of God. And he left his Unitarian ministry in Boston, where he'd been following in his father's footsteps, because he wanted to be excused from holding communion services. And he switched to a career of writing and lecturing, where he did very well. Many have concluded from this that Emerson had rejected organized religion. In fact, he continued as an active lay member of his Unitarian parish in Concord. There he did not use the main-floor pew he owned but sat with the poor whites and the Blacks in the balcony. On a winter lecture tour to the Twin Cities, he spoke for a fee at the St. Paul YMCA but also spoke at the Minneapolis Universalist church without charging a fee.

Careful with some of these commenters. Maren has stood up against racism, police violence, and anti-LGBTQ verbiage. Hence people saying she ruined her career because doing all of that in country music isn’t okay lol. Love Maren though, her music style is great!
