- Heading out to Port Colborne from Crystal Beach on the SeaDoo.
2 weeks earlier I had noticed the water levels are lower so i went over to the Sherkston Wreck to see how close the prop of the wreck in now to the surface befroe proceeding on to Port Colborne to see a few ships.
Also i encounter an Issue with the Seadoo, I thought it was something the IDF cleared, apparently not as it happened again on my next trip twice upon starting.
This was marked, however our winter storms on the south coast here can be a little unforgiving...I myself have marked this twice...BEWARE,BE SAFE!!!
Great of you to post the warning about the prop. Hopefully it gets a marking so people will avoid it.
Holy cow. You don't realize how big that is until you showed the still water pictures and video. My dad has told me from the time I was a kid you never run more than five knots closer than a half mile to shore for this very reason. Where I am normally running is between Sandusky and Vermilion Ohio and there are tons of old piers sunken about 2 ft from the water surface along the shoreline. The majority of people don't even know they're there...
I marked that damn thing last year and im guessing winter cut the line and the orange mooring ball long gone. When I come thru the canal again next month i'll drop off another one unless someone could PLEASE 🙏 take care of it sooner !! Its a DEATH HAZARD folks
Here in Minnesota rocks, submerged trees, stumps, shallow sand bars are always supposed to be marked, wintertime goes, and the moving ice sheet cuts & drags the sign out.
Try & make an effort, here when the signs disappear, white milk or bleach jugs are put down by lake shore org. or fishermen.
...bronze prop? I'm surprised that no-one has liberated it off to the nearest scrapyard...
Smae here, as the ship was mainly scrapped on the spot.
I guess it's free to take because i would of thought if someone still owned it, then they are responsible for the safety around it
Why didn't you mark it with floaters, milk jugs work fine tied to a string & weight. When you came back to it????
Exactly what I was thinking. He went back to it and didn’t bring a milk jug?
To answer your question, it would be marked as a shipwreck on charts and why he doesn't put jugs on them as its marked a heritage site and you don't mess with them unless you like huge fines
Hows the vaxx treating you?@@troycul6552
@@troycul6552 Bullsh!t. anyone can mark a under water hazard. I garendamnT you that.
If the coast guard or DNR is too lazy to put up a hazard sign, do it yourself, there will be no fines.
People are Lazy and dont care , thats the issue. I almost destroyed a new Mercury 9.9 in Lake Ontario cruising near shore and hit an old train track boat launch structure because water was low in late summer.
and this was a good 50' off the shore where a boat house ramp was extended to. I have marked that damn thing every spring since I started keeping slip at Port Dalhousie Marina. With so many new boaters and Jet Skiers who are careless to begin with , your 30 min effort could save someones LIFE or equipment.
Be the person who CARES in the boating community to help others and play it safe.
I'd be scrapping that chunk of bronze.
Hells yeah lol i was thinking to myself, wonder what thats made of….?
I grew up in Cedar Bay and played on this wreck, Steel Priducts, as a teenager and snorkelers around UT with my grandson.
As it was yearly cut up for scrap, it became clear that it was to become an even bigger navigational Hazzard!
I picked up a bouy the other day and hope to go and attach it soon. I'm currently away in Northen Ontario and when I get back I'll try and put it on rge prop
Thanks for that bit of info about the prop shaft. I jetski a lot from Cleveland and west to the islands.
I am planning a trip to Crystal Beach this summer..
Thanks Nigel
Great heads-up on that prop. Hopefully for boaters in your area it will be visually marked. Hitting that would be a game changer. I've had to use my IDF about four times since 2021. Worked great every time, and I was on my way. Love the footage of the ships. Thanks for the share.
Up in the Valley we mark these obstacles with a white javex container.
Went on Erie for the first time this season, had three batteries (including an optima blue top) all less than 4 years old and showing no signs of issue. Long story short my batteries died and had to be towed back in. Check your batteries close and make sure you have backup!
Hint: Optimas suck, since they were bought out.
Thank you for alerting everyone to this pwoblem. You should have marked it so no one else had a pwoblem with this prop. And you should have alerted ODNR about this pwoblem so they could take appropriate measures to rectify this pwoblem.
If you went up to the bridge in port colbourne on the far left side of the canal there is an old tunnel that goes for about 100 yards under the street. Pretty cool.
Thanks for the warning about the Venus prop! We're planning to visit it this summer so we're glad to know about the prop shaft! Agree that it should be marked...
Just go slow around the wreck. It's only about 8ft deep on the shore side of the wreck. And the prop is about 30 meters away (west) of the visible part of the wreck.
If the water is calm is really cool to see
Why don't they Mark that as a hazard to navigation???... Notify local Coast Guard station and tell them You're going to do IT😊... Good stuff thanks for posting...
I had no idea there was a shipwreck that close. I love all the ships. I gotta get back to Port Colborne soon, it's not like I live far away lol
Have you been to Whiskey & Walleye at the marina? I went last year and loved it. I need to get back for a food review when the weather is warmer. Thanks for sharing!
I can't believe nobody has dropped a buoy there. Thanks for sharing! I'll have to lock in the coordinates if near there.
Did no one notice that on his nautical gps unit the display changed as he crossed into “dangerous waters”..whether you are captaining a personal water chart or the Queen Mary it is your responsibility to know what your vessel capabilities are…what the weather is and what safety gear you need…and the depth of the water you are in… and most importantly where you are on the Lake ..you cross that invisible line referred to as the US/Canada border without proper notice and you will not have a good day
You can cross the border line. You can not meet up with another boat, person, touch land or drop anchor.(as per CBP)
Submarine cable is a power line landing on the bottom the sign is th keep people from anchoring and getting hooked up on it
Power cable that facilitates the Light House. Boater's don't seem to understand the issue, it's noted on the chart. I've seen overnighting sail boats come in and drop anchor on it and learn the hard way.
Sick ride! Id love to cruise around on one of those
It's an expensive hobby at times, travelling and then riding, but it's so worth it.
"Submarine Cable": If you don't know, learn how to use your charts. It's a cable on the bottom, usually electric or data. Don't anchor near it.😊
I know not to anchor around there, infact anywhere in the canal or by the entrance. Charts? I don't think anything on the Garmin showed me what was there, I'll check again
Tell the police. They will know who to contact to put a warning flag up.
Its been here for years, I am surprised there already isnt a marker. For the last 10 years it's probably been about 3ft below but now it's nearly on the surface.
I have seen many Jetski's and boats very close to it
Lake Erie Lake Monster
You must have a couple drywall screws holding that cap on
I've learnt the art of not looking up with my head, only use your eyes
Michigan Love 4 Lyfe! Michigan #1! Great Lakes Great Times!
Ok good I look forward to the weekend adventures, only suggestion is if you go somewhere, please explain more about the boat ramp you will be using, as i like to plan out similar trips after seeing yours etc.
Will do, I just did Port Dover today..I may have to narrate over the footage
Here is a good one for you. Check out mouse island. It is only about 200 meters from Catabuwa. You can launch from East Harbor State Park. Head west for a few minutes and you will see this small island. The President after Grant, Hayes owned it. They built two cabins in 1890’s. The fire places are still there. I saw an old photo of the Hayes family standing in the cabin in front of the fireplace. I took a selfie in the exact spot that the family was standing. Not only that but the island itself is beautiful. Really odd eroding. The ferry line is close to the island so every seven minutes or so the wake from the ferries hits the island. It makes this odd, artificial erosion pattern on the northwest shoreline.
BTW, this island is in Ohio. Ottawa County. About 45min from Cedar Point.
Hey Nigel I seen you today with the jetski rescue, it was floating at crystal beach. Good you found the owner and they came and got it. Tough to get off the beach. Lol cheers mate
Kevin? Cheers mate, thanks for the helping hand, now i'll go and check out your channel
@@NigelHay thank you. Would love to get a jetski and travel around like you do. I like your video of fishing up north on the jetski and when you went up Niagara river. I have a few drone videos of the Niagara river you might like. Cheers
@@ADVENTUREKM the black fly attack video where my face was attacked? Lol
@@NigelHay you or someone else was diving under a dock for something? Keys? I forget now.
Underwater hazards just beneath surface is a common danger for all boaters on all bodies of water. Tree stumps is a common one on lakes. Also sand bars and sudden shallow water where you don't expect it.😮
It'd make a great lawn ornament surprised someone hasnt snagged it.
Not many people own a barge mounted crane. Which is what you'd need to budge it.
@@lennychorn147 No it's doable though the approach looks shallow I figure thats in the 30 ton range maybe more with all that shaft but a pretty easy pick. In Florida that would be gone unless state or federally protected. I wonder if thats protected historically somehow??
@@alexanderleslie4226 How are you going to lift it out and haul it away, without a barge and crane?
@@lennychorn147 Uhhh with a crane and a barge of course.
@@alexanderleslie4226 That's what my original comment pointed out. Not many people have a barge and crane available. So we just went in a giant circle.
Coral Gables 🌴🇺🇸 We Summer in Vermilion and there is always logs and debri early Spring. Caution always. 🏄
That's like the Whale's Back in the north end of Green Bay on lake Michigan. It's between Cedar River and Washington Island.
Points out a ship barely coming into frame and then proceeds to pan the camera to show his face front and center…smh. Brother, we here to see the ships.
Not all the video's on here are of Ships, this one was more of an adventure that included ships, Those ships later featured as a seperate video for each. czcams.com/video/5i12VEdN_18/video.html and czcams.com/video/JoEJqao73zM/video.html
There is nothing like getting out in a Great Lake for the first time of the year. I hit lake Ontario Wednesday, completely alone out there.
I'm In Toronto
Lake Ontario is my hometown Lake (Kew Beach)
And Bay of Quinte is my Reservation (Tyendinaga)
@rabbithole8592 I launch from Deseronto several times a year, great riding but lots of weedy areas, especially towards Belleville.
@@craigaustin4779 Wow! Small World!
Great Fishing there though. One of the best fisheries in the World!
that is an underwater Mixmaster of pure fender-bender death and chaos
Saw Frontenac loading salt in Fairport May 7. She and Tadoussac are in frequently.
you could do a story on what's going on in the sky above you?
You should research Conneaut Ohio. Beautiful Lake front and you can actually ride a jet ski or small boat 2-3 miles up stream the conneaut creek from lake erie plus we have one the best bass fishing on the great lakes!
Marking that prop with a bouy would be the right thing to do !
You returned several times and didn’t think to do what you’re suggesting lol mark it!
I've heard many markers had been placed, many break lose during each storm. I presume a government agency won't mark it as then it makes them responsible (my guess)
Do you get wet on that sea do? I really like the fishing one but I’m not a fan of getting soaking wet every time I go out. I fish Lake Erie on my 19 ft dep v but would love something easier to use by myself.
7:37 That would absolutely ruin someone's day.
In Europa a string if yellow markers must be in place at any object on or below the water.
Those markers are mapped too.
That makes sense and all other wrecks that I'm away of under the surface are listed on maps and charts but not this one
Thanks I will slam into it on purpose now. Need some major insurance cash back from all the years paying them.
Flagging this comment for evidence
Why didn’t you mark it and report it? Geez!
Why doesn't the Coast Guard or local authorities just remove the dangerous prop?
in the lake where we live in ontario, there is a vw size rock just below the water in the middle of the bay that goes from 38 feet to less than 1 ft in seconds. i call it the "widow maker" and WE DO MARK IT every yr. we know where it is but fishermen don't and it is not on the charts. pretty stupid not to mark it.
Why aren't these hazards being removed?
So why don’t you contact the cost guard and see if they can place a marker buoy by that obstacle
I'll see who I could contact about that. It really should be marked. The ship remains are clearly visible but that prop is about 30 meters away from anything visible
Nigel you drop a bottle line there at the prop
That’s a problem that should be Marked with a Hazard Buoy .
How is it indicated on the Charts ?
Water levels are quite low, but they’re still higher than normal bro are you OK?
I wouldn't think it would be such a big deal to have a Coast Guard bouy tender hoist that prop and shaft out of there. It's a navigation hazard.
It may not be that easy if it's an historic wreck. You need approval from the appropriate bureaucracy.😮
So why didn’t you put a bottle on it then?
How? I don't seem to carry spare empty bottles or bouys. But I get your point
@@NigelHay half your video was finding it and warning people…you didn’t think putting a marker on it would make a better video than just saying hey there it is!
can you volunteer to put a marker there.
What happened to your friend's drone? Did a bird take it down?
Why not post the last and long of the wreck so people can avoid it
They usually take scrap ship for demi over to India.
I would of put something there on my own just saying or went to lake patrol or whoever they Have
What's it like to jetski around Long Point?
Other than the unpredictability of the weather, and how quick the water conditions change it's the same as anywhere else on the lake
Coastguard my friend, no exceptions. Needs to be marked. ❤
Why does no one salvage it. At least for safety sake?
So you ride around on a jetski and talk.... and a submerged hazard is the topic of a 19 minute video? If people need to watch this, they shouldn't be out on the water in the first place.
Call the coast guard
Yeah I'd mark that with a buoy .
Why has that not been removed?
Money I presume
I'm surprised you running around there so close to these ships... No Security vessel has intercepted you and wanted to know what the hell you're doing😂😂😂...
Nope, never been questioned and never got in their way.
@@NigelHaySo much for Security measures😂😂😂... thanks for taking the time to respond 👍
Are you telling me that they charge TWENTY BUCKS to launch a frickin JET SKI for a day's boating!!!???
20 plus tax to use the ramp, doesn't mater what you launch its the same price!
$15 Crystal Beach, $22.60 Port Colborne.
is it brass ? how come somebody hasn't savaged it
Wait, you have to pay to launch your boat? wtf?
climate control in your skies by Geo -engineering looks great,if you ever noticed or not, great informative video
500 like 👍
Contact OPP Marine unit
Why doesn’t it get marked with a buoy ?
Liability probably. If Canadian government agency placed one and it disappeared then any incident will become their problem.
If anyone should put one there, it should be the salvage company, they left it there. Just my thought
Eerie.
What a joke
Wow what a selfish person.
17° C, you monster, u know we dont know WHAT THAT MEANS. Lol im just goofy around, it looks like a gorgeous day on the lake.
Why on earth is that still sitting in the water anyway? Seems like something that should be removed from the water before someone dies from it 🤷♂️
No one wants to take resposibility i guess. If Government places a marker and then there is an incident becuase the marker went missing, I would pressume that the Government would be held accountable. I need to look into this more.
If you care enough to make a video about it; Why not mark it with a bouy yourself? If that’s not feasable because of MNR law or whatever. It’s simple to petition any goverment agency for the sake of public safety. Trust me, they don’t muck around about public safety.
Because I don't carry any with me, but we'll noted
@@NigelHay = Submarine cable is a power or telecommunications line laying across the bottom. the sign is to warn all boaters that it is illegal to drop anchor near it, to protect the line.
