    23:30 Day 3
    We did a three-day primitive camping trip on North Bass Island. The island is located in the center of Lake Erie in the state of Ohio. It is just two miles south of the Canadian border. Throughout this trip, we explored the entire island. Along with many swamps and beaches, we were surprised at how many abandoned buildings we found around the island. This would include a small abandoned neighborhood in the island's northeastern corner. While talking to our pilot he mentioned that there were only about 7 people that still live on North Bass. Back in the day there were several different independent grape vineyards on the Island. For some reason (which I haven't been able to figure out) they all left. We discovered over a dozen abandoned homes scattered around the island which we could only assume belonged to the owners of the vineyards and their families. It truly wasn't what we expected. Regardless I would definitely recommend the trip if you are into primitive camping! We also did some fishing and made some small projects while on this trip. All in all, North Bass is a fantastic place for remote camping!
    I hope you enjoy the video!

    • @mitwild
      @mitwild  Před 3 lety +6

      There were actually abandoned houses all around the island. The bulk of them were concentrated on the islands east side. The abandoned neighborhood is located in North Bass Island State Park East. If you follow Tuhan road to its eastern most point it will bring you to the area were the abandoned neighborhood starts. Its is a very remote place. I would personal say that North Bass is the best place for primitive/dispersed camping in Northern Ohio as there are not many other locations like it in the region!

      North Bass Island …… when I was a child, it was owned by the Myers winery, and it was a private island. The only people who were allowed on it were the native American employees that worked for the winery.

    13:57 You asked why there's only about a dozen people now living on the island, well, even during the summer, it's can be a bit of a hardship. There's not much for amenities, and probably the cost of bringing things to the island is expensive. The people who still live there own or work in the vineyards, so it's worth it to them, I suppose, but I cannot remember if the island is even wired for electricity (except by generator). Winters must be a bitch, if the lake freezes over.

    • @mitwild

      @@mitwild Northern Ohio used to be a large vacation destination. Cottages were popular all along the coast and some remnants include Put-In-Bay and Cedar Point. Folks use to go to their cottages along Lake Erie for summer vacations.
      The 1980s really saw a boom in air travel and cruising... Why go to your cottage on Lake Erie when you could go to the Bahamas for the same price? I grew up in Northeastern Ohio and Lake Erie is gorgeous, but had to compete with folks going to Orlando or Miami.
      Some old vacation destinations are growing again. Others are just ruins now.

      The old winery collapsed on middle bass island the island in between south and north hence the name. It was a very well known winery by the name of lonz or lanz I’m not sure but the whole building collapsed and it was a huge incident. The place closed down ever since now it’s just a museum/tourist spot. But if I’m not mistaken they used to grow grapes on north bass since it was mostly unpopulated and it was a short distance away.

Most Lake Erie islands in our area are uninhabited but there's 4 I know of that are and North Bass is one (this video) along with South Bass (which even has their own school) and Middle Bass. The last 2 have stores. Another inhabited island close to what I listed is Rattlesnake which is inhabited but I don't believe they have a store (but have a runway landing) so they'd have to go to stores on South or Middle Bass. Hope this answers your question and as far as growing stuff? South Bass is a frequent visiting island. They do have some vineyards and have their own winery too. There are no fruit trees anywhere at least on public land. Wikipedia has good history on it. Basically the drop in the price of grapes contributed to many leaving the island some time ago and the state owns almost all the property now. If you ever plan on visiting preparing for bugs is a must. Without repellant everywhere you sit your butt and your ankles will swell with chigger bites and mosquitos will buzz loudly around your tent all night.

    Yeah real shame that the State immediate domained all the property's on Nothbass. Used to be a nice island to vist. Flippin dump now. Thanks Strickland for ruining a nice place.
    BTW there used to be wild horses on the island. Had to buzz the airfield if they were grazing too close to the strip to land.

    Hey look at this abandoned house with the grass all nice and mowed. It's totally abandoned you guys.
    Ffs man 80% of North bass Island is private property.

      The abandoned houses are located near waypoint 4 which is designated inside of the state park. Map URL above. The main reason they are abandoned is actually because they are in the area that the state has claimed as the state park. This prevents anyone from buying them and renovating them.
      Also 589 acres of the 688 acre island is public. So more like 80% is public land. Link to this below
