    The state bought those houses from the owners to make the island into a park. Apparently, they never tore them down.

    Hey look at this abandoned house with the grass all nice and mowed. It's totally abandoned you guys. Ffs man 80% of North bass Island is private property.

    • @mitwild
      @mitwild Před rokem

      millennialinthewild.tumblr.com/image/634119812243685376 The abandoned houses are located near waypoint 4 which is designated inside of the state park. Map URL above. The main reason they are abandoned is actually because they are in the area that the state has claimed as the state park. This prevents anyone from buying them and renovating them. Also 589 acres of the 688 acre island is public. So more like 80% is public land. Link to this below en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Bass_Island

      Thanks! And we saw a lot of water snakes and birds but that's about it. About 85% of the Island is owned by the state and the rest is private. The island is smaller then South Bass and Kelly's but is still pretty decent in size. If you want a remote trip, its about the best you can do in northern Ohio.

    • @mitwild
      @mitwild Před 2 lety

      There are a few people on the island who I assume cut the grass and there indeed is a grape vineyard. All of these house that were shown in the video have been abandoned for a solid 30 years pulse. After further research I believe the state of Ohio owns the property were the abandoned house are located( they also own the vineyard) Since the state owns them no one can buy them which is why they are empty.

  • @suezaple4950
    @suezaple4950 Před 2 lety

    Maybe the owners left the island after the vineyard place collapse, they may have worked there. Then the state purchased ex. number of acres to turn it into wildlife reserve . would be interesting to know why they left though. Beautiful island to explore for sure . beautiful homes found there as well would have been a fun place in the good seasons . awesome video

      @oomnptideedee5207 Před 2 lety

      I am told they left because of the invention of the mechanical grape harvesters impacting the grape industry. It required less people to work the vineyards while also bringing down the price of grapes.

      The old winery collapsed on middle bass island the island in between south and north hence the name. It was a very well known winery by the name of lonz or lanz I’m not sure but the whole building collapsed and it was a huge incident. The place closed down ever since now it’s just a museum/tourist spot. But if I’m not mistaken they used to grow grapes on north bass since it was mostly unpopulated and it was a short distance away.

    Why so many abandoned houses? The answer is very simple...Time. Picture yourself owning a piece of land on an island. You build on it and enjoy it for a few decades. But then you become old, and your kid's have no interest. So they're left to decay it is very sad.
