  • Nigerians Protest Against Economic Catastrophe under Tinubu | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu introduced economic reforms as soon as he took office. He removed Nigeria's fuel subsidy & devalued the currency, the Naira. Both moves have had a disastrous impact on Nigeria's economy. The country is seeing inflation approach 30%. Palki Sharma tells you more.

The people do not trust the president. He came through corrupt means in an election he did not win, his history is entrenched in corruption (drug peddling, certificate forgery and election rigging) and his actions in power have raised many doubts about every promise he makes. If you think of how the UAE is able to generate wealth to build and maintain its world class infrastructure, Nigeria has the same means of generating wealth from the same source as the UAE and even more wealth. Outside the two you mentioned other are 3) High cost of governance 4)Insecurity 5)Corruption. Life is so hard in Nigeria right now. Prices of goods and services have tripled. A loaf of bread that was sold at 500 naira in December 2023 is now sold for 1200 naira. Living in Lagos right now is hell for salary earners

Add legitimacy issues to the list. Everyone with a brain knows the man rigged his way to that seat, with the corrupt judiciary doing his bidding. Again, the price of Diesel has increased from the the price we got after removing subsidy from Diesel because it was subsidy on Diesel that was first removed like two years ago. So, the price we bought up to November 2023 was still #800 per liter and since then, it has been changing, it's now #1,300 since January and since we do not have stable electricity, that's what industries use to produce and the cost is also reflecting.

Nigeria is properly ruddered should have no business bending to the IMF demands. There's no nation that made gigantic progress economically by listening to the IMF. The main interest of the IMF is the opening of global markets in a structure that benefits already developed economies.
Tinubu is inept. He has nailed Nigeria's coffin. My country may never recover. 🇳🇬

Thank you Palki for highlighting the struggle in our beloved country Nigeria. Can you throw more light (internationally) on the despicable political state where greedy political leaders live large and fat @ the expense of poor Nigerians? They have turned hardworking, contented people into angry men and women. They consistently ask the poor to tighten their belts but are buying billions of Naira worth of official vehicle at such a time as this and loot on a regular! It is not only the removal of fuel subsidy (which has always been a muted way of milking the country for long) that is plunging people into this dire situation, it is complexities of issues which the current politicians are not ready to fix because it that is not their aim and objective. What about the insecurity that has sent most farmers out of their farms and consequently increased hunger? Some problems are global, I do agree but Nigeria’s case is peculiar!!
