The Go-Go's Dive Into Their History in New Documentary at Sundance

  • Some people might come to a Go-Go’s documentary wanting a purely fun, bubbly experience, based on the effervescence the group projected at its breakthrough peak in the early ’80s. Others might want a sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll tell-all, if they’re aware of the tensions and bad habits that led the all-female band to acrimoniously break up in the mid-’80s (before many off-again, on-again reunions that have followed).
    As the group and their director stopped by Variety‘s Sundance studio, it was clear they were happy that pop-punk frolic got its due in the new movie.

I remember a group of either sophomore or junior girls dressed up as the Go-Go’s from the Beauty and the Beat album for Halloween and it was GREAT! I would also dance to Our Lips Are Sealed with my baby sister in the living room, playing their album on a record player over and over. Wonderful, wonderful memories. Gina is correct about the RRHOF. I have been there several times because I enjoy most of their displays. That said, it is as political of a place as congress is. A shining example is Leon Russell. Leon appeared on more recordings than many of his fellow Wrecking Crew members because he would cross genre lines not to mention his own recordings. Ever since it opened the HOF acted as if he never existed. Once Elton backed the tour of Leon and himself for no other reason than to pay his respects to Leon for his support and advise he provided to Elton early in his career. Within a six month period Leon went from a zero to an inductee in the RRHOF solely because of Elton pushing the subject to the HOF powers that be and a lot of behind the scenes lobbying. Leon was ìn poor health for many years. He performed at his induction in March 2011 and died in November 2016. Steve Miller openly told the world how artists were treated by the hall and so on as the same bs continues.

    I watched this documentary yesterday and it was great I highly recommend it.
    I've noticed a (very obvious) trend with bands once they become rich and famous, something you all know so I don't need to spell it out.
    I mentioned this for a purely selfish reason, I want to share an anecdote from the doc.
    They were talking about how bad their drug and alcohol use got when one of them shared this little story about Charlotte Caffey; One night in the late 80's or early 90's Ozzie Osbourne, yes Ozzie Osborne, kicked her out of his hotel room because she was so fucked up, again.
    Seriously what do you have to do to make Ozzie say "this is too much for me she's gotta go"?

    Living in LA back then it felt like the Go Go's and the Bangles were rivals like the Beatles and the Stones. I always wondered if they saw it that way too. Fun times.

    • @VanielDeeform
      @VanielDeeform Před 4 lety +7

      Post World My understanding is that they were on the same label initially (IRS) and that even though they liked The Go-Go's, The Bangles wanted to be recognised as their own band; not a 2nd version of the band who broke out a few years before.
      There are some photos online of them together in the 1980's. I don't think there was any real rivalry. Particularly as The Go-Go's had broken up, by the time The Bangles got really big. Plus, both bands have had a respective member join at different times. Vicki Peterson played lead guitar, replacing Charlotte Caffey while she was pregnant and being a Mom. And Kathy Valentine played bass with The Bangles for a time, when Micki Steele decided to leave the group. It would be amazing if they toured together, but it hasn't happened yet, but who knows...

      There was no rivalry between the bangles and the go-gos. The go-gos had pretty much run their course as the bangles were taking off. Over the years, the bangles have said in several interviews the "rivalry" was a media creation. The bangles never said anything unkind about them...quite the opposite, actually. (Bangles fan here👍👋)

    • @ellie8721
      @ellie8721 Před 4 lety +3

      @BlueArmy33 You like whom you like. You've probably only heard the Bangs' hit singles. I've only heard the Go-Go's singles. There's definitely more to the Bangs. They're a great rock band. Obviously the Go-Gos respected the Bangs enough to ask Vicki Peterson tour with them. The Bangs were all accomplished musicians, whereas, even Carlisle admitted that only Caffey could play her instrument and was the talented one. Sue said her eye thing came about due to being nervous. Doesn't matter which band one likes. They both had an impact on the music world and helped pave the way for other female artists.

    In the summer of 1983. August. I called out to summer football practice to go see the Go Go's at Castle Farms. Charlevoix Michigan. Only time I ever missed practice. Flock of Seagulls opened. Go Go's put on one of the best live shows I have ever seen. And I've seen AC DC live 6 times. So I know what a good live show is. Obviously they're 2 completely different types of show. But good live is the test of any genre. Incidentally the best live shows I've ever seen is a toss up between Dylan and Willie Nelson.

    Back around the end of September 1980 I met Kathy Valentine in the "Green" room at "The Whiskey" in Hollywood after her set with The Textones who were opening for Gary Myrick. I was just 21 and I don't recall any mention of Kathy playing with the Go-Gos. I did a little impromptu interview and I asked what The Textones had coming up to which she replied: "We're playing in Arizona next month." And I asked her somewhat jokingly "So, what do you do with your first MILLION? She looked right at me and said "I'd like to have a new car. I've never had a new car before." In just a matter 2-3 months later I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought at the time that the signed Textones flier would be the last I ever saw of Ms. Valentine when-BOOM! The Go-Gos debut LP in the display case of our Mall record store. For years I showed off my Kathy Valentine autographed flier from the Textones show in September 1980 that she signed: "With Kathy, from love." Sadly, one day the flier couldn't be found. Talk about GRACIOUS! It was me and my friend roaming the Whiskey like we OWNED the place and we landed in the band "Green Room" due to its having an unguarded open door. We weren't even sure when the Textones set was ending so imagine our surprise when they wandered in from the stage. My friend and I had a demeanor that made everyone think that wherever we were-we were SUPPOSED to be there. Kathy and one of the guy members I don't remember which one were receptive to our presence and we stood around and "schmoozed" for awhile. I do remember that Carla O. was not in the room at the time. My friend bought a "Gary Myrick & The Figures"t-shirt. There were no Textones t-shirts that night. Now 40 years later I look back and I see this "Green Room" in my mind and think how I was talking to someone who neither one of us had any idea of what a heart-stopping ride she was about to get on. Now, either she had already joined the Go-Gos but thought it inappropriate to mention "another band" or her going over to them was not a done deal in late September 1980. The only other part of our conversation I can recall is when I mentioned that my friend and I live in NC and we're driving back in a few days and we're stopping to see my friend's sister in Austin, when Kathy's eyes got big and she says "Yeah, Austin! That's where I'm from! Carla, too!"

    Club Zero was their first Billboard Hot 100 hit in 19 years when they released it in 2020. Then the hall of fame after this documentary and the new hit song invited them to join the Hall of fame in 2021. Their latest incarnation in the 2020s is just amazing as few bands from the 1980s still perform on stage, by themselves, with no support from anyone else. Yet the Go Go's did it - their way and by themselves.
