Making our 2HP 2 Stroke WASHING MACHINE Powered Mini Bike Faster!
Vložit
- čas přidán 2. 11. 2021
- We built a Bird Nighthawk with a 1960s 2 stroke Jacobsen engine, making for a sweet 1960s vintage mini bike. The downside is that the gearing was way too tall, meaning our little 2 horsepower engine would barely move under its own power with a rider. In today's episode, we install a jackshaft to reduce the mini bike's gearing, surprise Ike with the bike, and we all go for hot laps to see who is the fastest ride around the CarsandCameras GP.

2 stroke put a slightly heavier spring in the clutch so the motor can rev up more b4 it takes off
czcams.com/video/_mstbNizOjIu/video.htmlurey
Y'all are gearing that tiny 2 stroke like it's a 4 stroke. Your power is on the higher RPMs! Great job, I love every build you guys do!! I hope you all do more 2 stroke builds. The amount of power you can get out of those tiny engines is incredible!
No matter what gear combination used it’s still 2hp,
@@vermontaviator1248 my Puch Maxi was 2hp and could at least pull pretty well to 30mph without an issue. It's now like 7hp and rocks.
@@vermontaviator1248 it does matter if it doesn't get into the powerband.
It sounds like the governor is kicking in way before it needs to, but again, 2hp.
Those old two strokes were awful even for the application they were intended for, I worked on tons of them in the late seventies but hated every minute of it.
add more springs to the clutch to make it engage at higher rpm...2 strokes have no power until they wind out...basically the clutch you have on there is meant for a 4 stroke power band that engages at much lower RPM..
yeah like you would a tuned moped
You can hear when the engine gets into it stride and starts pulling, it around there it should engage.
Problem with that is you just burn it out. It's meant to engage just below the rise in the powerband
Exactly what I was just thinking
Well it's a washing machine engine not designed for high RPM. this engine is has port timing design for low RPM.. if you really want to wake it up need to do some porting and add an expansion chamber and some other goodies
Aluminum baseball bat makes a great tunable expansion chamber
How would this work?
In all seriousness, I like watching the videos with the low horsepower machines probably more than the crazy powerful builds. Makes me think of the fun I used to have on my dad's old 10 1/2 horsepower Ski-Doo snowmobile.
I loved the saying "I'd rather go fast on a slow bike than slow on a fast bike".... Very true.
Thanks again for a very entertaining video!
For some reason this is one of my favorite builds from you guys. To take an old 2hp washing machine and plant it on super cool old school mini bike is priceless. Great job guys.
It got's the power you just need to set the gearing for the high rpm's for a two stroke. Use a slide carb with pod filter.
performance expansion chamber. eliminate the jack shaft. This thing should rip pretty good. I love this build!
U r absolutely right. Maybe get some port work done to it (if possible) .. after they get to the next project .. while its just sittin up
From what I've heard megaphone exhaust works better on this older style than expansion chamber but yes.
@@noahpaulette1490 yes exactly, a proper Mikuni conversion, and a tuned megaphone and it will wake right up, port work on these cross flows are gone about much differently aswell. If anyone is interested, the book tunning for speed, covers alot on the very early two stroke development as it was written first in 48 and updated a few times throughout the 60s into the 70s. Nothing wrong with the jack shaft, the clutch engagement needs to be at a much higher rpm to get her off the line with athourity.
"we're professional idiots" literally me and my buddies🤣🤣
I believe that is most of us that have subbed... 🤣🤣🤣
Agreed, we all do crazy thing, almost die, but have fun dooing, and sometimes go back for more
Love Charles being a regular!!!
14:45 you can hear charles say a great movie line. "Telegram for mongo" (blazing saddles)
Charles is hilarious
I caught that too lol.
I knew a kid way back when who ran a Tillotson carb off of a Pioneer chainsaw and a homemade megaphone header on one of those on his Rupp minibike and it screamed while being wicked quick. MODIFY IT.
Pumper carb would make a huge difference.
Charles is the "BEST THING" that could have helped/happened to "CAR'S and CAMERA'S"!
Don’t tell Ike. I sense friction 😂
Definitely the projects are great since he joined
Definitely
Ike, Jon, and Charles have great chemistry, with Charles on it makes all three of them bounce off each other and shine all the more.
Fellas, you need me on the team - I need me to be on the team - this brings me so many memories of growing up and "fixing" old machines. Finding this one to be a great build!
I wonder how many people got the "Candy cram for Mongo" refrance. Awsome job.
You guys should put a two-stroke expansion pipe on their help it breathe more
Unlikely to find one for that motor. That being said, they're not that hard to make. Plug in the numbers into an online calculator for 2T pipes and it'll spit out something that will wake it up.
But then getting the motor to run in the sweet spot rpm (power band). That should be easier than the pipe, but maybe not...
@@MrSpaz12 this is true my friend I just think it would be really cool and it really would help it runs better with a figure carburetor of course making one is the only way to go
Bigger
@@johnfarish9305 totally agree. If they're bored. It's a bit time consuming for probably not more than maybe 4 or 5 horsepower and that's fairly generous I think. But they could also play around with squish to bump the compression up a bit. Carburetor. Make some reeds from carbon fiber and like you said, bigger carb. Might even be able to massage the ports a bit as well. And most of what I mentioned is (relatively) cheap if not free if they already have the parts lying around.
@@MrSpaz12 False, you could put a 50-125cc expansion chamber from any 2 stroke dirtbike with welding, used pipes go for no more than a 100 on ebay i have tons of them for my experiments
If possible, I would gear it for more low end. You can hear it start pulling once it gets going and it would be easier on the engine. You probably won't lose too much top end, but if you do, you could gain that back by removing the governor. To me gearing is everything. Keep up the great work.
Might want a calendar instead of a stopwatch
You should call it “mild per hour”
Miles per mellinium
More two strokes please!! I love watching these old two stroke revivals.
I have a 4hp Tecumseh 2 smoker Id send out ported and cone piped for them to shove in a bike!
Charles was giving me Jeb the bush flash backs there for a minute 😂
The Biggest train wreck in C&C history?? I remember a school bus story once...
Nah 2 strokes for the win ;)
As the saying goes. There should only be 2 valves on a bike. One in each tire ;)
What are the odds of you showing up
EDIT: please say that you kind of hate two stroke engines because we all know that they don’t have good acceleration when it comes to full throttle and power. You don’t get no more than 3 horsepower 4.5 if you are lucky but definitely hardly any torque. You’ll have to push it to even get it to go. Also, the carbon build up in the cylinder head will get insanely bad due to the gasoline and oil both entering the combustion chamber and as a result say goodbye to your head gaskets.
One word of advice when you put those 2 stroke vehicles in storage drain all of the fuel immediately. You’ll end up cleaning out the carburettor of all of the sludge. Especially if you don’t want to have the needle and seat to stick because it could cause the engine to run away.
I am saying that about my personal experience with using a 2 stroke go kart. Two words for that…. IT SUCKED
I never bought another one again
I remember someone rolling a hot rod lawnmower
And the police coming to John's parents' house
@@dilianvt
...wtf is happening
HAHAHAH
You all were business savy by adding Charles!! He's a Hoot!!!!
Great channel!
I get excited everytime i see a new upload.
Keep them coming!
Yet again another unique build. Great work fellas! 🤘🏻
Ok, for some reason this is one of my favorite C&C mini bike builds.
If you wanna try some different vintage nos carbs on the engine let me know I have a few. Also could try and give pointers on what to change to addpower
Your such a good guy ike and john you came a long way ike is such a great teacher.Charles your the addition this channel was waiting on.
Great job guys....congrats Charles !!!!
Love you guys been watching you since the beginning
I love watching your content! And you have inspired me to try my hand at making motorized toys. Just wanted to say thank you for you efforts!
Congratulations on 1million subs, been watching since 400k, and your videos have always kept me glued to my screen, keep up the great ideas, and showing the American public why we don't need phones to have fun, and keep us busy.
14:45 craftsmanship. Does that mean a craftsman tool was thrown at it? LOL - love the vid - good times
Is that an old Rupp in the background @ 11:50? My dad had a Rupp Roadster and gave us rides around the backyard in the mid-70's. That was my favorite minibike ever.
dude that thing is dope as hell!
Best part of the episode is Ike at 16:30
Noice thx
25 mph that is 2 mph faster than the little 2 stroke bike I brought to mini mayhem
I'm sure that Ike was glad he got his pressure suit on! If you get the chance, can you please do another episode on this, adding an expansion chamber exhaust and a little flatslide? I know that it's pushing it for spoiling the purity - but I guarantee it will come to LIFE!
I think you meant 17:06 is the best part.
Nope, definitely 14:47
as always great stuff thanks guys
A off road crawler trail riding mower would be cool to build. Like maybe, oh, an old WHEEL HORSE? :)
Pull the muffler and check for carbon build up in the exhaust port.
You should do hot laps with each of you carrying it while running and see if you beat your times. 😁 😁
I love the cleetus influence on john:"just send it brother"
i agree!
love those 2cycle sounds man i cant lie
This lil thing is rad!
Charles does good work.
You know everyone is obsessed with more power but then the dependability on two strokes drop. Better clutching is the best. None the less you three had a blast with it and thats what is important.
It is like the old GP two strokes, one wrong move and they locked up because they were on the edge of max power and destroyed.
Whiskey throttle on that one is deadly! I say that and would still ride it with a smile. Well done boys.
I love tis channel cuz it allows me to dream about my childhood. I had a Taco 44
Hey Guys great video, Just a suggestion get rid of the tiny restrictive exhaust and put on a pipe with an expansion chamber like on a 2 stroke dirt bike you'll get
much more power.
You guys need to do a group photo shoot and walk around with a summary of each machine
Its amazing how far you have come
I just picked up a vintage 6x6 amphibian from the 70s to restore
Would be awesome to see you guys pick one up and drive it into the pond
Now this is good quality content 💯😂
I'd like to see another race tractor u haven't had one since Ike wrecked the last one at like 60mph
Congratulations on 1m subscribers!
Reminds me of my new grom. LoL
Love you guys keep it up
I dont know why the phrase "its already dead" plays in my head but dang you made it roll! Nice to see a Volvo in the weeds! Mutch love from Sweden! :)
Not gonna lie I love this build. It looks cool, and even if its kinda gutless it looks fun to putter around on. I love how Ike said it, its more fun to rides a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.
I think when John came over the finish line it was the slowest and looked so funny over Ikes shoulder 😂🤣😂🤣
I've been liking them minibikes. Brings back the 80's for a dude. You guys ever look at them 2 stroke bicycle motors? They make some quality 80cc jobs.
This classic iron brings back memories. My Uncle had a Rupp Roaster II, that be passed down to my older brother. I think it had a 3hp Tecumseh with a legit Comet Tor-Q-Verter. It also had front and rear suspension, head and tail lights, and front and read drum brakes. I'd love to get an old beater minibike and throw a Predator in there, add some go fast parts, etc. I course, in my weight class (300 lbs!) I need all the help I can get. Maybe I should start with a Tillotson? LoL
Is that RUPP Roadster in the background?? Love the content, you guys are great!
Ha! The pre-roll ad on this for for Jacobsen tractors!
Gearing helped, but it is the low rpm clutch engagement that is the problem. That engine makes no power at 2k rpms....mod the clutch to engage at 3.5 or 4k rpms and it would be heaps better.
9:15 HUFFY! THose ripped - I had one LOL
This bike is so cool. Be good one for putting around large flea markets
A light porting, little bigger carb (not a lot bigger) and a little chamber pipe... Tweak the clutch, and go....
2 stroke is life!!!
Yesss I love what you guys do and I’m going to start doing my on builds I got the first like
Charles says "telegram for mongo". Classic blazing saddles referance!
Lil John swimming in those tims..lol
That made a huge difference
you guys need to toss a quality carburetor on that thing, and put an expansion chamber pipe on it. that alone can bump a 2-stokes power up noticeably. and it's simple and cheap too.
I like that cute little bike 🚲
Legends respect
That clutch is hooking up at an rpm that's a little low for taking off with an adult. Great to see your right arm's back in order Ike. Blew my mind slightly seeing you pull start that engine with it.
Gear Ratio Calculations Example: eng sprocket 10 tooth to jackshaft sprocket 30 tooth, other side of jackshaft 10 tooth to wheel sprocket 60 tooth. Engine to jackshaft ratio is 3:1 and jack to wheel is 6:1 the combined is 3x6= 18:1 There are some simple formulas knowing the engine RPM, final ratio, wheel circumference to calculate MPH, or reverse that since you know the 25MPH, you can calculate what RPM the engine was turning. You can also calculate what size sprockets to use if you want to change the ratio by a certain percentage. Then some more fun stuff based on HP, weight of bike or go-kart, the ideal gear ratio can then be approximately predicted based on data from other builds. Of course it depends if are going for pickup or top speed things need to adjust. You guys probably already do this by feel since you have so many builds and experience.
Bro 21 minutes old and already three and a half Thousand views whooh! Can't wait to watch
Okay you cannot sit and watch this time trial without a big stupid grin on your face, this was awesome! 😂
I would like to see you guys do up some 50cc scooters, would be great to see. But apart from that you guys are unreal to watch, love your videos, keep up the good work guys. From Queensland Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍👍
Gotta love the janky Jacobson's snail bike 🚲
14:47 "Telegram for Mongo." I love Blazing Saddles.
Here's an idea for you in the TopGear style. Can you build a go-cart out of stuff you find at a swap meet, at the swap meet?
Charles gave it the flintstone start. He should’ve tried the flintstone 🛑….FEET DOWN!!!!
Too much fun 😁😁😁
I thought for sure you were going to stick the times on the bottom of the cabinet below the board...lol You're having fun and that is what counts!
P.S. I would still like to see you guys build some more 2-stroke stuff with performance engines and carburetors.
Ya'll ain't gotta worry about popping that engine from high revs. Two strokes have a compressive load on their rods at all times. That thing will run out of power before it's in any danger of exploding.
As for perking it up...get an alcohol carb on it and feed it RC car fuel. 20% nitromethane, 12% lubricant, balance methanol. It's gonna FLY on that stuff, prolly spit out 4-5hp.
Itll melt down on nitromethane
@@CobaltOntarioadventures Engine would run cooler, actually. Significantly so.
Combustion temp may be down, but it will blow up. We raced plenty of PROPERLY tuned sleds on the lake and nitro eats crank seals. It will melt down. It isn't an RC engine with no seals
@@CobaltOntarioadventures They have a second engine for parts and they'll maybe ride it 3 or 4 times before it gets shuffled off into storage alongside all the other builds they do.
No harm whatsoever in feeding that thing a hot supper or two.
Also, it aint that much nitro. The bulk chemical is gonna be methanol.
@@TestECull it's the methanol that dries seals lol anyhow, not trying to be confrontational here. But I've seen plenty of 2 strokes pop on nitro. Lots.
That being said, you're right about them getting a few runs out of it and thats that. For kicks, sure rip it on nitro. They got their money back already on this video for sure. That's the difference I guess, between making content and building engines.
That is a funny looking person!!!! LoL. I'm dying!!!
Something to think about for a future build. Are you familiar with cycle carts. Lots of great videos out there. 👍
If you guys can get your hands on a Roketa 250 gk39 it's most definitely worth your while, I got one a few weeks back awesome machine!!
4:10 nice Goldmember reference.
You look very toit! Yesh toit like a toiger! Would you like a shmoke and a pancake?
Hey guys love your show just a suggestion I was watching your Honda 90 built I think if you use the factory air intake filter system it's going to run a lot better
Put heavier springs in the clutch and grind some weight off the clutch shoes it will raise the stall rpm drastically and let the engine get into the power more quickly👍
like the skinny tires, very old school. the front end with the "sort of" suspension is cool. be really nice with a swing arm and some rear shocks
Perfect bike for my kids 😀
That thing is a rocket ship.
Could you guys do a 50cc 2stroke build to try and beat the world record? Sounds ridiculous but would be amazing to see
Hi y’all from west Alabama love ya
Guys i just got an 06 briggs and stratton 5.5hp tiller engine and im trying to figure out how to put it on a minibike any ideas guys?
Like always this Old Man enjoying your videos. John your Dad and I talked a lot about the three of y'all during my appointment yesterday. I could really see how proud he is in how far y'all have come. 🛵🧔💝💝💝
Id love to see a build off 3 of you with 3 gokart frames and $400 to build them! I think it would be absolutely amazing what each one of you would build. Plus 2 of my coworkers and myself are going to be doing that soon so it would give us some ideas lol
First love the videos man.
Charles is 6 seconds LIGHTER than Isaac. :P
Thanks!
