Palworld vs. Pokémon Comparison: Just How Similar Are the Designs?

- Much has been made of Palworld's Pal designs bearing a striking resemblance to certain Pokémon, so IGN's resident Pokémaniac Joshua Yehl went through and made a comparison of each one. Does Boltmane look like a Shiny Luxray? Does Verdash look like a green Cinderace? Take a look at this Palworld/Pokémon comparison and decide for yourself.

Some of these comparisons are legitimate, but some of them are a real stretch.
Saying one of the designs "stole" snorlaxs mouth design, whenever his mouth is literally a very generic simple line with 2 triangular teeth is a huge stretch.
Like youre really gonna act like because Snorlaxs mouth looks like that it is pokemon IP? They can copyright claim any simple mouth with 2 teeth? Lol
yeah, similar sure, apart from literally everything else about the design
If we're having a conversation about the similarities between Pals and Pokémon and you don't think it's at least odd that Palworld has several Pals that have the exact same face as certain Pokémon, then I don't know what to tell you. Maybe if that were the only instance of copying then it wouldn't mean much, but it's one of many, and it just shows how widespread Palworld's copying is, from entire models down to simple lines to make a face.
@@joshuayehl7628 Thats your opinion and not what people are complaining about, either palworld stole complete models or even use ai to fusion some pokemon models. No pals have the exact same face as of any pokemon, not like they have complex design that is hard to reproduce but simplistic enough that you could find similarities in many other simpler designs. Plus there are how many pokemon? little more than a thousand now, arent you a little hypocritical to complain that some pals parts looks like one of the thousand of pokemon created to date?
@@pk6546 It's not my opinion, it's all laid out to see, clear as day. There's no denying the similarities, ranging from superficial to exact models and details used but rearranged and recolored. That's a fact. As to whether it's enough to make a case for copyright infringement, the Pokémon Company is investigating that right now.
@@joshuayehl7628 Thats your opinion that you find it odd that a monster taming game have some creatures that makes you think of one of the thousand of pokemon or that its an infringement in any way. Because you cant act like bunch of people didnt outright accused them of lying and telling on them to big daddy nintendo as if they werent aware despite shutting down that pokemon mod.. Its just absurd, do you really want nintendo to have power over any similar creatures inspired on real animal? You werent there when pokemon ripped dragon quest and mtg, or when all those other games were litteral clones of pokemon, you come out of the woodwork when one can potentially be as popular if not more than pokemon. So go ahead, defend your favorite big brand even though besides the artstyle of the monsters theres nothing like pokemon in that game

Similar but not the same. Nintendo would've sued already if they had a case.
Pokemon has 100 birds that are easy to tell apart because they hire artists and go through the design process for each. There's no 2d art for any of the pals, for some reason (maybe because they're frankensteined together)

About decidueye having the same color palette as Robin Quill, Funnily enough, if you type "Robin hood color palette" into google, you will get the same one.

I did look over those, and the key difference is that Pokémon's designs are clearly "inspired by" the DQ monsters, whereas Palworld seems to be using actual Pokemon assets (or close enough that they are indistinguishable) that are the same model, shape, etc. like with Dinossom, Azurobe, etc. It's one thing to put your own spin on an idea and another thing entirely to copy and paste a Pokémon, recolor it, and then try to sell it as a direct competitor to Pokémon.
It's not about similar designs. It's the similarities in Artstyle. Pal monsters look like new Pokemon or "Pokemon Frankenstein." It looks like they asked AI to make 1 monster from 2 or 3 different pokemons at the same time and tweaked those designs a little bit.

So what I'm getting is that Nintendo sent the text. You guys are reaching. Your approach is that Nintendo has copyrights to all facial features in anime and body types. Even tridents an oceanic weapon.
Obviously that's not the case. But beyond a shadow of a doubt Palworld is, in some cases, using models, features, etc. that are indistinguishable from those of certain Pokémon. Palworld using one face that looks just like Snorlax isn't a big deal, but it's not just one face, it's tons of things, from small details to entire models. One instance of copying might be given a free pass, but when a game has dozens of designs that look like they were copied and pasted from Pokémon and then recolored and rearranged, and then they try to sell that game as a direct competitor to Pokémon, that's what becomes the grounds for copyright infringement. If this were all in the realm of legal fair use, then Pokémon wouldn't have publicly announced they're investigating Palworld.
It's not about similar designs. It's the similarities in Artstyle. Pal monsters look like new Pokemon or "Pokemon Frankenstein." It looks like they asked AI to make 1 monster from 2 or 3 different pokemons at the same time and tweaked those designs a little bit.
