Start with the 40s films, Prison, Thirst and Crisis, all excellent foundations for his later films, like Summer with Monika, Virgin Spring, Sawdust and Tinsel, Smiles of a Summer's Night , Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal; then proceed onto the 'faith trilogy' , then go onto Persona, Hour of the Wolf, The Magician and Shame; proceed to Cries and Whispers, then onto Fanny and Alexandre, perhaps Scenes from a Marriage and Autumn Sonata.

I would highly recommend the Criterion complete Bly ray box set with almost all his films. It’s’ not cheap at £150 upwards, but it contains almost 40 films, and many of them aren’t available to watch elsewhere. I’ve been watching them chronologically and it’s been a real treat to do it this way to see Bergman’s style develop over the years.

    • @randomrecipes5007

Yeah, it's not cheap, but bang for you buck? It's insane. Nearly 40 films for 150 bucks.. That's like 3 dollar a blu ray.

I started with Wild Strawberries when I knew very little about his films and would concur with this approach. Also agree with MW that most films upto, say '53-'54 don't reflect the true range of him and so can be deferred to see if one is falling in love with the director or not. Bergman, like Angelopoulos, Bunuel and Tarkovsky, to name a few, is not everyone's director and it is OK if you don't like him in the first pass.

    • @Dirkschneider

@@Victor-E-R I mean Victor you obviously don't understand the essence of an opinion... not everyone shares it with you... because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I didn't watch the video. And it's not that you don't have the time to lay our your rationale, you just don't have the desire which is fine. But if we're talking about time... the amount of time you've responded to me with meaningless comments you could have explained your argument... I mean to be fair to you you kinda started by saying that he went in circles which is a start... All I wanted to know is to get inside your brain as to how you came to that opinion is all... some examples would be great if you have the care to go back, rewatch, and give me some timestamps (which I realize is unlikely).
