- Welcome to the valley. Stay alive. Keep hydrated. Make it home.
In the wild, Rhinos and Red-Billed Oxpeckers have a very unique symbiotic relationship. The oxpeckers spend their day nestled on top of the rhino for food and protection, and in return they help to alert the often visually-impaired rhinos if there is danger in the area. They can, however, be a nuisance to their hosts, often picking at wounds when searching for food, and their bond can quickly turn parasitic.
Based on their relationship in the wild, The Rhino and the Redbill is an independent Kickstarter pilot telling the story of a blind rhinoceros named Niles, a flightless oxpecker named Red, and their unhatched egg Sam, working together to weather the harsh realities of a drought ravaged wilderness. Scorchwater Valley is dying and it's taking everyone else down with it, and the duo strive to breathe life into a new world as they prepare for a newborn on the way. It's every creature for themselves as social structures have collapsed and factions of carnivorous gangs, evil cults, and deadly poachers compete to stay on top of the food chain. Niles and Redford have to work together to survive in a dying world, provided they can survive each other.

Absolutely criminal that this is isn't in the eight digits in views and picked up for an animated series. The animation is feature film good but I can't get over the absolute PERFECTION of the writing and voice acting. What an absolute winner; I hope this is considered for the Oscars.
Yes, this
It's at least in the 6 digits for views
@@thegreatgoldfilms6311 That's awesome. It was at around 35K when I made this comment.
It should be in the seven-eight digits.
This is very interesting good animation and story plot
The best things are for the culture people. Although this has few visits, only the real people can understand this great job
Absolutely AMAZING WORK! So proud to be able to say I was part of this project! Thanks all for watching, and Help Someone Smile Today!
Adler amigo esta aqui!😁
Fantastic performance on this by the way. You were certainly one of the highlights.
I thought I recognized your voice!
IT WAS YOU!!!! I was watching the whole thing and I was like ''yoo this bird sounds exactly like adler.... Am 'I crazy ??
Aaaaa I thought that was you! What a fitting role, you did an absolutely amazing job!
The chemistry between this rhino and this bird made me want MORE!!!!
Fun fact: Rhinos actually have poor eyesight, but this doesn’t mean your safe if one is charging directly at you . They have great cense of smell and hearing.
*random information*
Agreed
@user-jd2gm1vb3o Here’s another fact: if the rhino is born blind and doesn’t have a bird for directions, the rhino would grab a random stick and use it as a walking stick with his hand.
@user-jd2gm1vb3o wow
Symbiosis
This was a beautiful piece. Seeing two disabled individuals helping each other navigate through a dark and barren "mad max-ish" world is a great premise for a story about friendship, survival, and trust.
Please keep up the great work.
How is the bird "disabled"?
@@lagopusvulpuz1571 One of his wings is broken. Did you not see the video?
@@ThePoetryNinja I saw it & the bird was flying without issues the whole video. It's harder to see. I thought the bird was lazy or didn't want to leave his friend behind.
Why does real talent never get the views it deserves
This was freaking amazing
Both this and Liam Vickers' Let's Split Up are good Pilots that could become even greater shows.
Algorithm
So enjoyable to watch, and huge fuel/appreciation from a fellow pilot-animator. Can't wait to see more from you!
This animation should be a animated series, his characters are so cool, the music is perfecto according with the animation, that intro and it has a open final
This is the kind of animation that deserves millions of views. You are severely under rated.
God I want a full series now, this was truly special. Found this channel because of the DK Country reanimations and was pleasantly surprised to see he's made a pilot episode with his own ideas. Great stuff, the retro soundtrack, voiceacting/characters, the superb animation and overall concept comes together perfectly. Hope to see more!
It is beyond criminal that a finely produced Kickstarter pilot like this, which BTW could easily pass as a legit Hollywood product, doesn't have enough views right now. Such a shame!
In my opinion is a masterpiece among the CZcams animations. This pilot animation has a lot of potential to become an animated series with a lot of secret lore
I really, really, hope this gets picked up as a show it’s so beautiful. Everything from the art, music, voice actors oml 😩😩💖💖
Netflix
Also main character is blind
This is genuinely the best looking animated short film since Dinosauria. I like this concept a lot.
True. Immagine collaboration between Alex Henderson and David James Armsby. That would be brilliant
Man this was truly worth the wait! The animation Is amazing, the voice acting was top notch, the music Is nostalgically retro, and was very Intrigued with the story as well. I hope you still get a chance to make onto TV someday or even your own reboot on the Donkey Kong Courtney TV Show (or new movie comeabck)
Oh man! I loved it and REALLY hope it becomes a series. I want to know more about the characters and world. And we gotta see Sam.
Hello great action Hero.....
Not only was the animation BEAUTIFUL, but it was overall a fun time all around! I legit want this to become a series!
I just realized that rhinos in real life have poor vision and the rhino has poor vision too
Excellent Pilot! While anthropomorphic worlds have been done before, you created something conceptionualy unique and cool. Like Sly Cooper meets Mad Max. I also love the character dynamic between Red and Niles, and the inclusion of Sammy adds a sweet depth to both characters.
Edit: Aside from SkullOx, knowing you I bet the big bad is going to be a gigantic crocodile that's some kind of water baron.
I also pondered if it could work to have the big bad be an elephant water baron, seeing how some young bull elephants were notorious for attacking and killing rhinos.
For example, I could imagine such a villain being designed like an Immortan Joe homage, with a respirator that covers the length of his whole trunk. Mirroring the real animal, the villain could not only be physically stronger than Niles, but also dangerously intelligent. Yet, he could be prone to having unhinged fits of temper, during which the sides of his face could start leaking like a real elephant in musth.
Massive kudos to the composer, absolutely nailed it, especially during the action/suspense scenes!!
Edit: fav part is during that convo from around 8:58. Fits the scene perfectly!
I don't know why I really enjoyed the graceful animation of that one archer, just caught me off guard, but in a good way. Love the animation, it's so fluid, and bouncy, especially the hyena! Wonderful job with the voice direction, was surprised when I heard Alder, but you all did great!
😳
Damn.
This deserves more views.
Love the characters.
Alex, I can’t thank you enough for letting me write the music for your amazing film! I had such a blast working on this and enjoyed every second of our collaboration! Thank you so much for this wonderful experience! 🦏🪶
Score was top notch, you did fantastic work!
@@WolfGodwin Thanks so much!
It's a stellar score, your work combined turned out amazing!
@@zigorously Thank you!!
All I can that all is so well combined that it seems like work from a professional studio
Your so underrated wtf. It’s annoying that incredible works like this arent seen a lot
Wow, the writing and the whole "show, not tell" about the world and characters are absolutely FANTASTIC! I hope to see more of this!
The animation on this is... incredible. Art and everything, even the voice acting.
The only thing I got against it is that there are times when it feels like you're doing world building instead of writing character dialogue.
Still, this awesome. Movie worthy stuff.
This is beautiful. The animation is absolutely pro=level and with the bold design choices of an indie creator. The cel-shading blends so well with the expressive animation, it is nearly as expressive as traditional hand-drawn but with all the benefits like easily moving a camera and matching color continuity that CG provides. This is one of those videos I find that feels way too good to be free. It feels like a blessing. Thank you for committing to this and sharing your talent. I'm sure it took forever and was very difficult. It shows- this is masterclass.
Shout out for the great score as well.
I love this especially the 2 main characters being a rhino & red bill bird giving off Banjo-Kazooie in a Mad Max setting, & I like that you made Niles blind which is a reference to how rhinos in real life have bad eyesight
While the 3D did show in a few shots, the crafting on this is very well done. I especially appreciate the execution of the classic "hyper but jumps the gun vs. more straight face but thought out" dynamic. The characters need each other and despite their differences can co-operate for a common goal.
Written, created, and directed by Alex Henderson. A real big triple threat like that is definitely a gift. 😌
This needs a full series.
If this ever becomes a full series I would so watch it!
How is this not under production somewhere? The low view count borders on criminal. Such quality.
This was very inspired, using the natural relationship between these two species and the smooth way they work together was amazing, and I loved it, want to see episode 2 of these guys so much. That last joke, "I've been naked this entire time, had me laughing so hard." thank you all for putting in so much effort for this.
dude, this need to become a series this is awesome
Honestly a show like this is may what we need
This is a straight-up masterpiece. Also I wonder if the knife Rolo has at 5:34 is the same one Niles dropped, cause if so it's a nice touch.
It's like Banjo and Kazooie with Jak 2's tone, I love it!
Incredible work!! I'd love to see more. The world-building and characters are really good!
This is Disney level quality. Y'all killed it.
Watching this again a year and a half later, this is still such an amazing accomplishment!
Holy cow! It's final here! This just made my day!
Why does this only have 72,000 views? This is incredible!
I rediscovered this pilot recently, and it felt like I was watching it for the first time again.
This was insanely good! Love the detail of the audio becoming less quiet and compressed once Rollo shows up. It's like the episode at that point had become real, and there was real danger going on.
Overall, this pilot ticks all the boxes for me. Great storyline, well-written characters, and some standout action scenes. I REALLY hope to see more of this universe someday. Great work all around! 👍
This is a massively fun pilot, and it leaves me with a lot of questions but in the good way; I wonder how long the draught has been going on for things to get this dangerous, but I appreciate the mystery. I particularly love the color-schemes for the Rolo introduction and the scavenger's bright red lair, contrasting with the neutral opening and endings, as well as the black-and-white teaser after the credits, made every scene feel unique.
This should definitely be a show!
Damn, how did I miss this till now? The effort put in here is monumental! A true delight to watch, classic tropes and all!
I don't know how many times I've watched this short film. I'm just in love with these characters and really want to see one day a series or feature film with their participation. And I really like this visual style. That seems to be all I wanted to say. I hope this short film gets even more attention because it deserves it💛
Amazingly done. I love the soft lines over hard lines. Kinda give a more lifelike look to the environs and characters. The banter between the two are just a whole other level of fun too. I really hope we get more adventure of these two.
That was amazing!
Man..this has an excellent potential, simple, productive, danger yet definitely not excessive. A fantastic balance of great pearl, good optimism and good target male audience of young and old, much like Indiana Jones or The goonies would do.
Your a marvellous animator and if consistent, I only see great future of you telling stories. Looking forward for more of this blind big rhino guy and bird boy, of this post-apocalyptic adventure.
Dude!! This needs to be made into a series ASAP! Weither it be TV Show, Netflix, Webseries, i don't know! Just... something man! This was to good to just be slept on man... Fantastic work with stuff like the animation, characters, story, voice acting, etc. Hope this becomes more man!
This is absolutely amazing. The writing, the animation, voice acting, sound design and music is TOP NOTCH!!!
DUDE
That was amazing! The expressions, the voice acting, the MOVEMENT - UGHHHH please I need more of this what do I need to do to get more of this
Terrific animation, characters, and voice acting!! The ONLY critique I can offer is on the sound design... The levels are noticeably different between character voices (and some FX and scenes as well), and the voiceover EQ makes it obvious that the voiceovers were recorded on different microphones. Those are minor caveats on a great piece of animation!
this is so good, i hope that my comment helps get it recommended to other people. i love the premise and the characters, the pilot plot is very well-executed, and this project deserves more love
Underrated series pilot alert.
Great job
I hope one day I get this level of animation
I think the character designs and animation style are just amazing.
Love this, especially the hyenas
I remember seeing parts of this on Twitter one day. Glad to see what came from that. It's a really well-put-together pilot.
I hope this picks up. Your team ROCKS. Good pacing on the script, and there was plenty of time to marvel at the amazing visuals in this animation. Fitting and GOOD voice actors, interesting plot, and so exciting. The designs for the mine and the wolf (hyena?) gang were awesome! The whole chase scene was amazing...like a movie. Niles and Red are a familiar duo (and Sam a familiar third), but in this short pilot you made us root for them and their dynamic. The stakes of this dying world are plain to see, too. It'll be interesting to see what else they get into in this decaying, bleak land. So glad to see such a talented anthro animator.
Dude this is awesome! The characters, the story, the animation, it's all amazing! My only feedback is there some parts the lack sound. For example the escape scene in the minecart was had little to no sound effect outside of the punching. However other than that this is really good and I hope more people see it!
Worth every second of the wait
This is the coolest premise for a series I've ever seen! Keep up the fantastic work and good luck getting picked up for more!
This needs to be a series. Well written and drawn. Very entertaining and engaging. I'd love to see more.
Yes, I need a full series. 👏💯
I'm getting Mad Max and TMNT Mad Max vibes out of this!
That climax was absolute gold! I haven't gotten that hyped by something in some time!
This is absolutely phenomenal. Love the animation style. The voice acting and characters are incredible! Really great work
Honestly this is one of the best independent animations I have seen. Keep up the good work, you are gonna go far.
OMFG!! The writing and animation own a great quality!! Even the world building connects with characters nature themselves. At the same time, I want to see more about the dynamic between Niles and Red. Lovely characters! I just fall in love with them!
Really, this pilot deserves a place somewhere, or at least, 3 million view minimum.
P.S: please upload the soundtrack! I would listen it repeatedly!
I'd love to see more of this! Fluid animation, strong characterizations, smart storytelling. Excellent stuff! My only issue is with the sound mixing. All of the voices sound a smidge low.
Looks interesting! Not every day you see a series with anthros aimed at an older audience. Great animation, character designs, writing, voice work, music...a good package all around. Hope you get to make a full series.
I found this in a totally normal place and had to immediately come give it some love here! ❤
The animations are gorgeous! Sound design and voices could use some work, setting is very enjoyable! I'd love to see this turn into a movie/series!
This deserves so much more attention
Really excellent! Minor nitpick is that sometimes the dialogue doesn't cut through the bg audio as crisp as it should.
I have been so grateful to be a part of your project and am so impressed at how amazing it turned out.
Thank you so much, I will always be proud to be Rolo!
Very good, only issue I had was the audio was kind of low at some points.
This looks absolutely amazing, I could see this being a full series!
Bro this deserves more attention
I know and there’s More Indie Animation Shows deserve more credit Other than Hazbin, hotel, or HellvaBoss
You forgot to credit whoever voiced Sam.
Jokes aside, this is possibly the best pilot I’ve ever watched on CZcams. (second to Smiling Friends and we all know how that turned out! 🤞) I hope this becomes a show because holy shit am I hooked!
CRIMINALLY underrated, this was sick!!
Just found this now and I have to say: "I love it!"
Getting mixed vibes of Mad Max and Book of Eli. Also, love the "retro" text/credits.
Very interesting and love those characters 👌
Rino is blind and buffed up
And
Bird has a baby egg Sam
Also at the end I don't know what does he want from them look scary but I love the villain looks 💀
Really surprised by the voice acting of each character. I thought they were gonna have goofy voice. And the animation is awesome too! It is beautiful...
Hey ! I'm french but i understand the story with the subtitles, animation is great ! Full of life and the story is great also ! love the coordination of this team, i hope you will continue
Not gonna lie this would make for a cool video game concept. Kinda has a Banjo Kazooie feel to it.
That was so awesome! I seriously hope there will be more!
Amazing! Hope it becomes an actual series!
Amazing animation and the voices fit perfectly! Great work guys!
Been watching your progress making this since you first designed the characters roughly 7 years ago. It's amazing you've been sticking with this project for such a long time. You have a passion for what you do which is what makes your animations and other creations feel so genuine. Keep up the amazing work. Here's a hug (>'-')>
Now that I've rewatched this a few times, and have had time to digest, I have some more things to say.
First, the animation is incredible. These characters move with a fluidity and purpose that is seriously best-in-class.
I feel like the audio levels could use some work. Sometimes the music drowns out the dialogue, and sometimes the dialogue sounds a bit faint.
The character designs are very appealing. Especially Red. His design is clearly just a regular bird, but his model allows him to emote well. It's always a tough choice when it comes to giving bird characters teeth, but I think you made it work here.
The writing is on-point. The relationship between Niles and Red really shines through. The hyena goons shooting the breeze was amazing.
I don't know what the future holds for this project, but this pilot stands as one of the great achievements of indie animation.
This was incredible! The animation, the voice acting! Everything is just...*chef's kiss*
I'm so happy that your project is final here for pilot. I have been waiting very patiently, not saying that you guys should hurry by the way keep up the awesome work.
Oml This is such a masterpiece! I definitely love the music, VA, Character design, and the concept
I was so looking forward to this, and it did not disappoint!
i love it¡ i really hope this project can become a full series in the future.
That was awesome!! Really liked the dynamic between Niles and Red.
Also this animation style is so fluid! I seriously can't tell if it's 2D or 3D sometimes :o
Can't wait to see more tales from Scorchwater Valley!
okay i need more. this was downright amazing. thanks so much for this
Aside from a need for voice sound improvement cause the audio did feel off a lot, I think this series and animation has a lot of potential and can’t wait to see if it takes off into something greater
