Bring's back memories as I first went to Clacton aged 5 in 1957 and also went to The Savoy Theatre to see Billy Cotton and His Band during The 57 Summer Season in Rosemary Road as there was a Little Cafe across from The Savoy called The Olive Tree Cafe which we went to each time we were in Clacton and that was quite a lot as my Aunt had 3 Caravans with 2 being at Valley Farm and the third one was in Holland-On-Sea.
In 1968 my Aunt and Uncle bought a House in Clacton and I was there many Weekends, and finally moved myself to Clacton in 1976 until 1989.
Another Hey-Day for Clacton was back in The Sixties when The Pirate Radio Stations - Radio Caroline, and Radio London along with RNI (Radio Northsea International) in 1971 could be seen from Clacton Beach.

This is quite interesting being a clacton resident all my life, and remembering some of these old shops from when i was a kid. Its such a shame that the video footage is not as good a quality as some of the home digital video cameras of today.
    Great video anyway though.
    Thanx!

Does anyone remember the shell house in jaywick? Or the swimming pool in butlins where you could see the swimming pool viewing window from the cafe …

Thank you for sharing this great piece of history. I just caught a glimpse of our house as you approach the old Butlins. Thanks to the people in the car too, assuming they are no longer with us?

Bob Young who is one of the people commentating, only died a couple of years ago. His wife is still alive I believe, but now in an old peoples home. My father still owns the car he had, when Bob could still drive. He had to pack up driving a couple years before he died, and his wife also called Bob, (their showbiz act was Uncle Bob and Aunty Bobby lol!) Sold the car to my dad after he passed away. They was a lovely old couple, quite a couple of local celebrities, putting on shows, and theatre, well into their late 70's.

Really interesting watching this, during my time living in Clacton, Old Butlins site is now a housing estate and coach park, and when you swing round to the car park opposite, block of flats where my wife and I brought our first flat in 1994!

Thankyou for posting this great video, i would love to know when this was recorded as im pretty sure i was a resident of clacton at the time of recording. We had the station hotel pub between 1985/7 and many great memories were had there, like my dad getting drunk with Terry Downes the boxer on the night of his 50th birthday and Peter Buglione! I think Peter fancied a shot at the title with Terry that night until my dad smoothed it out, one of many occasions when dad smoothed things out with peter in the pub. Its a shame your journey didn't bypass the pub and circle the station trangle, would've been awesome to see it on video in all its glory! How nostalgic it was to be driving up past the old shakespear theatre and seeing the car sales place, the pub garden was just behind it. And just down past the town hall is a gold estate car i think its a Peugeot or a talbot but i remember that car always being there never moved and the tax was out of date. The place is just as i remember it when i was 10. Im 47 now, The journey from holland park school back into town took me back, those were the days! Thanks again for posting 👍

I think the recording date of this is summer 1985. My reasoning is that the slide on the pier that was blown away in the great storm of 87 is still on the pier. Plus the closure of atlas park was in 1985.
