As an Avs fan, every element of this video is pleasing. Especially since Forsberg wasn’t on the initial trade list. It’s crazy when you see GM’s give up the farm for one guy as it usually works out much better for the team getting the haul.

I'm a lifelong Flyers fan and I was a kid when we traded for Lindros and of course loved it, and I'm still a huge Big E fan ... but just imagine if we didn't include Peter Forsberg ... a team that had Eric Lindros, Peter Forsberg, & Rod Brind'amour at Center - the superstar "Power Forward", the superstar Swedish skillman, and one of the best two-way Centermen in the game ... what a difference the 90s and 200s would have been lol.
I could sit down and listen to Shannon talk about hockey for a whole day and love every second of it.

Lindros was always great to the neighborhood kids when he was a Flyer. Playing roller hockey and foot hockey in front of his house. Good guy to everyone at MSG when he was a player as well. Very sad he had those concussions.
It's funny how history repeats itself. Duchene, much like Lindros didn't want to play for a bad team and yet both times they were wrong and the Avs ended up better after they left.
Sad to say without that trade happening, Colorado doesn't get Roy, Forsberg or Ricci when it comes time to hoist the Cup in 96. I believe Chris Simon was apart of those Future Considerations that Quebec got in return who was also apart of that 96 Cup winning team

As a (former?) Avs fan, this trade is one the best in history. Any Flyers fan that has looked into what players you traded away or didn't draft over the years overall? Heart attack invoking when you put it all together.
I'm quite sure any Flyers fan is aware of what was involved. After Gretzky going to LA, this is the biggest trade in the history of the league and certainly the biggest in Flyers history

Forsberg and Lindros are on the same level. Just one of them had other hall of famers around them to help them win while they were healthy.
The Steve Dangle trade tree made me realize just how huge this (and the Gretz trade) were in causing just a massive amount of changing influence in the league
I think the Nordiques had to draft Lindros, even knowing he wouldn't play. The bounty for trading him made it worth the risk. As it turned out the Nordiques/Avalanche easily won that deal in the long term.
Lindros must've been gutted Toronto had traded the pick that would've made him a Leaf. Rangers would've been trading away a cup right there.
Not close to the same level, but brings to my mind the Duchene trade. I couldn't believe that haul when it happened and still can't now. Do we see Avalanche where they are without that deal? Maybe, but boy did it help keep things rolling.

Lindros didn’t want to sign with Quebec because Marcel Aubut, during a visit with the family before the draft, insulted Lindros’ mother in French not realizing she spoke the language and understood him. Can’t blame him - I know I wouldn’t have played for an owner like that, either. Also, combine that with the fact that the Nordiques had the #1 pick in three drafts in a row.

Guy Lafleur said Aubut had made a comment about Lindros' mother in french, not knowing she was bilingual. Given Aubut's sexual harrassment lawsuit later, it seems plausible.

Enjoyed watching this. I remember the Lindros affair very well. I didn't know what the Rangers had offered. Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make.
Off the top of my head it was Kovalev Amonte Weight Vanbiesbrouck + Money and picks. The proposed trade that Shanon mentioned is not how I remember it at all.
I loved Lindros. His Jersey was the first I owned. Every year my former boss gets a signed photo of Lindros, frames it, and gives it to me for Christmas.

Two teams ended up winning Cups because of this day. The Rangers won because they didn't give up Alexei Kovalev which helped them win the 1994 Cup, and the Colorado Avalanche of course got Ricci, Forsberg, and the pick that became Thibault who they traded for Patrick Roy

The true architect of the late 90s and early 2000s Avalanche was Eric Lindros.
The true architect of the current Avalanche is Matt Duchene.
When I think of Lindros, I think of Elway, he pulled the same scam refusing to play for the team that drafted him. Amazingly it benefited Denver fans in BOTH cases!
I understand players wanting to choose their team/employer but it just can't work in pro sports. No one good would ever play for the small markets or losing teams. The draft is a necessary evil.
I always thought less of Lindros(and Elway)[and Manning] for doing this. I don't know anything about WHY it was done, but I have nothing but negative suspicions about the why and they mostly evolve around money. I remember Lindros being featured uniquely in the sports trading card world(Score) when he was drafted. I'm sure he made a lot of money on that deal too.
The only other athlete I can recall who refused to play for the team that drafted him, iirc, was Eli Manning when he was taken by the Chargers. Ended up working out for him, at least.

Peter Forsberg straight up for Lindros and the Nordiques still win the trade. People think Lindros is the ultimate what if story without the injuries didn’t follow Forsbergs career closely enough. Avs would have won 3 cups if he was mostly healthy.

The Red Wings didn't mind beating Lindros and the Flyers for the Stanley Cup, either!
The Red Wings probably didn't appreciate the guys who were traded to the Nordiques helping stomp them in the 95-96 western conference finals.

I remember being in Lindros' camp at that draft. I can't remember specifics, to be honest, but I had a distinct dislike for both Aubut and Page, I think the team under performed, I don't think their player development with lower picks (the top picks any of us could have made they were no brainers) or something along those lines. The irony is that in avoiding bad management at the draft, he ended up with Bobby Clark. Out of the frying pan....
Page was dealing with the Flyers, Aubut was dealing with the Rangers. That's how they ended up with two deals. This proved to be the motivation for creating the 'Trade Call' portion of a deal. TSN broke it down in the 20-year anniversary.

God, the Lindros Trade Deal was -the- trade that made the Avalanche. That first season doesn't happen without this trade.

The Rangers deal was Tony Amonte, Doug Weight, Alexei Kovalev, John Vanbiesbrouck, 1st round picks in 1993, 1994, 1996 and cash. Vanbiesbrouck was trying to become a free agent that summer. He had an arbitration case. IF VBK became a free agent, James Patrick was going to Quebec in place of VBK.

The Aubut era Nordiques were such a gong show. Little wonder Lindros didn't want anything to do with him and thus the Nordiques as a result.
Only thing missing is The Unknown Coach, a flashing Jaye P Morgan, and GENE GENE THE SKATING MACHINE!!!!
Pretty sure Richter and Vanbiesbrouk literally rotated games all season long and the playoff starter was an unknown until seasons end.
Richter and Leetch were unreal for them but I could easily picture that Vanbiesbrouck and Leetch are the heroes in an alternate universe
When the Nordiques left... it happened over night from my recollection. They just upped and moved.
Two years earlier in the NFL, a similar thing occurred when the Dallas Cowboys traded Herschel Walker to Minnesota (details here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herschel_Walker_trade)
So since then, the smart money says, "If you have a choice between having one great player or a bunch of draft picks, go with the draft picks."

Has a young Nordique fan in the 90s, I remembers that Aubut selling the teams wasn't a sure thing.
But the second that the Qc gouvernment said it wasn't paying for a new arena things unfolded pretty quickly and we didn't even have a chance to say goodbye to the team.
Combine that most of the media coverage here was in french, probably that why you didn't heard that much about it compare to the jets.
Note that they were rumors that some of the part owner wanted to buy aubut share to keep the team in place, but the comcast deal happened so fast they didn't had time to come up the capital.
Oh, and one more thing you forgot to mention: the referendum completely dominated the province's media. The Nordiques were seen as the Oui team and the Oui side saw losing the team as a lost cause / worthy sacrifice for Quebec's independence. Instead they lost both.

San Jose drafted Pat Falloon with the #2 pick after Quebec. It’s safe to say there was a big drop off in talent that year after Lindros…he was the clear cut #1 guy that year.
The fact that Quebec was sold to Colorado within two years of the draft shows he threw a hissy fit for nothing unless you think that Quebec stays there with the SAME owner if he played there.
Got one of my favorite players out of that deal in forsberg and Jocelyn worked out well in helping get a trade done for Roy....was too young at the time to understand (5) but looking back as an AVS fan, they won that trade no doubt
its crazy to think two of the biggest trades of all time where made by one team, and no one can say they didnt do amazing in those trades id take forsberg over lindros any day, got to see a aves game and peter had 3 goals and 3 assists and he was hitting everything and the other team being dallas couldnt get the puck away from him and if they double teamed him sakic was there to take the puck and they had tangay on the same line they had 6 goals during that game
I 110% agree if NYR traded for Lindros there would be no 1994. As a fan of 90's Van, it's sad it didn't happen. I guess there are many older NYI fans that agree.

To answer the question you ask at the end of the video, here's how it likely happened:
They (the Nordiques) were in talk with many teams for Lindros, including the Flyers and Rangers. The Rangers deal was likely the Nordiques' latest counter offer, that the Rangers had previously declined. Say, for example, that they had made an offer similar to the one you had on the board, but with another players instead of Amonte. The Nordiques say, "throw in Amonte instead of X and we have a deal." Rangers decline. Then the Nordiques come to an agreement with the Flyers. But then the phone rings, it's the Rangers, they're willing to throw in Amonte now, and the Nordiques prefer that deal.
Chaos/hilarity ensues.
Now I'm not saying it WAS Amonte, I just used him as an example of how it is very likely to have played out. It was most likely the Rangers who, at the last minute, agreed to Quebec's latest demands, just after Quebec had agreed to a deal with the Flyers, that they then tried to walk back from.

Lindros should have said he would have no problem playing for the Habs. I think that would have quelled some of the anger among French Canadians.

Lindros’ career took off when the Flyers traded Recchi to Montreal for Dejardins, LeClaire, and Dionne. That turned the Flyers into contenders. Unfortunately they couldn’t get a goalie to counter Brodeur. Which is why NJ had their number
Lindros actually did say he would play for the Habs, it was even mentioned in "Coaches Corner". It was a perfect bluff, he had good PR reps. Smooth!
But the media had already painted him as the number one villain, so good luck fighting against bad press once that narrative sells wholesale to the mob...
Great video but my recollection of events was that Eric’s helicoptering-parents, Carl and Bonnie, were his original agents and were way over their heads. A classic example of why not to mix business and blood.

In a interview, Lindros declare that he doesn't want to play for Marcel Aubut, and years later, Marcel was in a scandal about Sexual harassement.
Don't know if it was knew in the 90, but I still respect Lindros to refuse to play for him.
He was known to screw people in business at that time. It's later that we found out he wasn't the kind of guy to wear pants in office meetings.
Imagine a one-two punch of Forsberg and Lindros down the middle in Philly. Then probably a Sakic and Sundin in Colorado. It would have been awesome!

Lindros really had a point about not wanting to go Quebec. It was amateur hour with the franchise. Look at what happened...they trade him twice. All kinds of rules were put in place because of this situation
He said it's only because he didn't like the coach at the time. Québec has a huge hockey market and people kept going fully to the games. The only reason that they left Québec is because they lacked parterships.

I think it's fair to say that the NY Rangers might not have won the Cup in 1994 if Lindros went to them instead of Philadelphia, but NOT because Vanbiesbrouck would have been in goal instead of Richter. Both goalies were elite. The only reason the Rangers let Vanbiesbrouck go in the expansion draft in 1993 was because he was 3 years older than Richter, not because he was clearly better. And, by the way, Vanbiesbrouck led the expansion Panthers to the Cup Finals in 1996.

I do remember at the time Lindros was reported saying he would like to play on the Blackhawks. But he also was reported saying he didn't want to play on a Canadian team because endorsement deals in the U.S. were more lucrative. I always thought the Chicago statement was just the team reporter he was talking with. That he would take any American team just insert the city who he was doing an interview with.

It's weird when you look back at the early days of the NHL, 1920's & 30's, just about every trade involved cash. Of course there were no draft picks back then.

Honestly, if Lindros was not traded, I don't think the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche would've won the Stanley Cup (or at least by 1996). Those pieces that they got from the Flyers either became key contributors in those Avalanche cup winning teams, or fliped for other pieces that became part of those cup winning teams. As for the Rangers - if that proposed trade came into fruition, would NY trade for Messier and go on to win the 1994 Stanley Cup? The Lindros saga is one huge spider web of what if's.

As much as this trade set the Avs up for success, the initial offer was even more insane!

@@midimusicforever It sucked... There was no coasting - full game every night. Many disagree with me but I think lazy coaching also helped shorten his career - sending him up the middle of the ice with the puck because he could most of the time... was brutally punishing back then.

I think the 2 trades part makes it clear why Lindros was apprehensive about playing under Aubut.

Re Richter vs. Vanbiesbrouck: It's debatable. Beezer was arguably better with Florida in the mid-90s than Richter was with the Rangers during that time. They were pretty dead even. If Beezer is the Rangers goalie in '94, I don't see how that makes any real difference for them.
I agree with you, though, in terms of that entire trade being made. If the Rangers make that trade for Lindros, they don't have those young players that they used to acquire the likes of Noonan, Matteau, Larmer, etc., and would also be down Kovalev and Nemchinov.

as a ranger happy to trade them for Eric, our team is still, vanbies, beuke, lowe, zubov leetch, messier graves gartner, lindros tikky and larmer, thats a pretty good team. The only one i miss is kovalev
Even though trading Amonte to CHI could look like a mistake, Matteau was part of that return. Lindros not going to NYR ended up working out for the better.
