Mecha Ritz: Steel Rondo is a fantastic bullet hell shoot-em-up by HEY that's currently available on PC through Steam and Switch. It stands out thanks to an extremely dynamic rank system, meaning the game can be as easy or hard as you like it. The music and presentation is also excellent, there's a total of 9 unique stages and 14(!) playable ships so lots of replayability too.
The game received a v2.0 update in 2022 that adds some new content and revises some existing one. Notable to this update are the new GRAY ships, which can summon friend options to shoot and clear bullets with it.
How it works:
- Pressing fire button releases up to 8 friend options whose shot angles depend on your position.
- Each friend option can clear bullets(!), but they have limited HP. If they die you have to wait before you can release another
- You can fix this by focusing, which stops them from shooting but creates a healing barrier around you that they gravitate towards and recover HP (also good for just creating a quick shield in front of you).
The ship is quite hard to use and controlling the options' position and firing is clunky, but when you learn it successfully it's amazingly strong, on par with PURPLE.
This run was pretty good, I ended with a really high rank and overall decent score.
