Next time you do a prank involving someones car (we all know there WILL be a next time), just wait till they go the bathroom, THEN take their keys.
Better idea, you should have replaced his car keys when he wasn't looking wih a fake version. So he wouldn't even notice until it was time to go home.

It mostly comes down to dialects in the UK, where by going a few miles you'll find a different accent etc. American English has been influenced heavily by German and French which is why your pronunciations are similar to old/middle English and you can't use that to say that American English is closer because it's not even English.
