    This whole Fyre festival thing was really eye opening for me. I never really understood the workings of influencers and payment etc. After watching the Netflix doc I deleted my Instagram app. The first few days I felt like I was missing out but now I don't care. It's good to not feel like you're being sold to all the time. I stopped using Facebook in 2012 and never looked back. My only vices I suppose are CZcams, which I'm trying to to cut back on and Twitter.

    • @sf6555

      Very true, influencers are just paid props. It can be very dangerous.

    • @teewrx420
      @teewrx420 Před 5 lety +10

      Question, if you consider CZcams a vice, that should mean TV, Netflix, or media in general would be a vice as well right?
      Disclosure:
      Ive never had a Facebook, to similar to MySpace which grew tiresome. Instagram and Snapchat I use but that's only with friends. I'm constantly on CZcams though. Being able to just think of some topic and searching is why I don't watch much TV, or Netflix anymore.
      I would also ask this... If your first concern is influencers and how easily you believe they can influence people, or yourself, to buy shit, why couldn't you just ignore them.
      I see the underlying problem with Instagram models though. They essentially fake their lives, gain followers because they know how to manipulate people's minds, then sell the shit out of "sponsors" merch or services. It's everywhere in media, even print. But you can't lock yourself entirely out of the world. Except Facebook. Fuck them.

      Shamey Ames They’re credit as producers because they owned some of the footage, but that’s it. And they weren’t paid in full by Billy. They didn’t really scam anyone, they just did their jobs. They were the advertising agency who was hired. That’s it. They weren’t the masterminds behind it. Doesn’t take away from the fact that the Netflix doc was good. Also, the Hulu doc paid Billy which is even worse I think.

      re: "making money off people's suffering"
      As far as I can gather, the people that suffered the most are the people who actually did the work without getting paid, or who wound up with massive debts as a result of their involvement.
      If they manage to get some of their money back (or even profit) from selling their footage, or being interviewed or whatever, then I think that's fair enough. Really though - the money should go to the islanders first.

    I organized a lot of partys ("both" kinds: Techno and Metal) after high school and in university. The biggest party had like 800 paying guests and the rent for the place was 5,000€ plus a guaranteed drink consumption of another 5000€ (which is no problem in case a location gets filled) and around 5000€ for DJs and security at an 14€ entrance fee. It went well, but i can assure you that unless the 720th guest entered and i broke even, i was at the verge of a mental breakdown. It took less than two hours to break even, but these two hours, man... That was last time i made such a "big" event. In case it fails you potentially loose like 10,000€ but in case it goes well you barely make more than 2000 or 3000. Learning about this Fyre issue, i would love to hear, what this "entrepreneur" was thinking, how he could handle such a bunch spoiled rich kids. The market has changed forever and the idea of live concerts might not be lucrative at all because people won't be able to go to concerts! How does a venue scale a "successful" profit if they are required to only allow 50% capacity?
    Even if we were able to come back fully, the question of IF people would be willing/able to attend live events is still an issue? I don't think they will be at the same they were in 2019 for a while, if at all.

If the emphasis had been put on the music and accommodations/logistics first, instead of the marketing and "backing", it might have worked out. But no one cared about the product or the customers, including Marc Weinstein. So instead of dollar signs, he has a lot of interviews, where he can blame someone else for his lack of diligence.

    Yeah all events are a mess leading up to it but...no infrastructure, plumbing, or basic fundamental understanding of how to run a festival were too many red flags for anyone who has had ANY experience in event planning and execution.
    I think the problem was that people, both attending and making the event, were so obsessed with being a part of the FIRST FYRE FESTIVAL. Being the first to experience and be apart of this revolutionary event and concept. Why not just wait it out for the following year to see how these things would actually play out? If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

      Artists never have an hourly income. Theyre paid exclusively, in regards to festivals, a lump sum that the festival agrees to in exchange for them bringing their own equipment, band and of course the main act. If the festival is free to haggle, and both sides are free to end negotiations if they arent getting what they want.
