It's hard to come up with a superlative to describe the talent, voice, charisma and all around sexiness of this man. I would have been a quivering puddle if I was in that audience. Love you Elvis, forever!
He was so relaxed. Love this jam session. He can really play that guitar. 1968 he did a medley of old hits from 1956. By this time he changed, music changed but people wanted the old Elvis and he gave the best performances of his life. No one ever will replace him. He had everything and sang from the heart.
A lot of today's artists were inspired by Elvis and this iconic special.
This was very creative because it was actually his whole musical career from the beginning playing with a small band to the movies, gospel to life performances. The complete story. Bravo to you and Elvis. Fantastic. Thank you.

After he came back from a 2 year stint in the army, he had a multi year movie contract when he didn’t do live performances and just released music from the movies. He was very unhappy, and quite literally made himself physically ill, over the quality of the scripts and music, but he had no control over any of it. He said it was the same script over and over with different names. And he made waaaaay too many of them. His manager did him no favors by pushing him in that direction. This was supposed to be a tv Christmas special, but as you can see, it didn’t turn out that way. It’s called his comeback special because it was a huge success and relaunched his singing and performing career.

The 68 Comback Special was filmed a couple of months after the assinations of MLK and Robert Kennedy, it was a Turbulent time in America with the Protests over the Vietnam War, The Civil Rights Marches and the Country was was being torn apart. This song was added as a Tribute to MLK and RFK and to bring Unity & Healing to the Nation.
Yes, this was done on NBC as a TV Special, I was young but I remember watching it. ❤
Watched the whole special on TV. Small screen. I was 24 married almost four years. Sat in front of the TV the whole time. My husband was jealous.
This is surely Elvis version of Hip hop! He was so versatile. How many singers are in five Halls of fame?
If I can Dream is my favorite. He did it with so much emotion. He was exhausted at the end. His back up singers said they never heard him sing any song like that. They were all crying including Elvis. It was a tribute to MLK and RFK. that had been assassinated. The song was written for Elvis with his input to express his feelings. The Aloha from Hawaii 1973 concert is the mature Elvis. That’s how it is 1970. All the songs in those are fabulously done.

Elvis only did movies and soundtrack albums from 1960 on. He had a 9 year contract (i believe) with paramount and missed a live audience. He wasn't shure, if he still had IT and was afraid to get on stage. Well here we saw the results, produced by Steve Binder.

Elvis did 31 movies from 1956-1969, After being drafted in the Army in 1958 he came back home in 1960 and did only movies until 1968 this was his first concert in ten years 👍

One of his girl backup singers is Whitney Houston's mother. The Col didn't want the religious part in this program.
He was rarely relaxed and was always nervous, especially for this show. He had not been on stage in over a decade. He did not like that leather jumpsuit. He sweat so much they had to rip the seams for him to get out of it so they could clean it. This was filmed in a couple of days so they had to use it again.

The composer for "Motherless Child" wrote "If I Can Dream" while the were rehearsing and shooting the show. The Col hated the producers because they didn't take his orders. He never would allow Elvis to make political statements and the producers wanted to do more of that Elvis wanted to do. They wanted him to make a comment about the deaths of MLK and Robert Kennedy, but the Col didn't think it would help sell music. The Col didn't know he would be doing "If I CAn Dream" which was considered to political. Elvis, the movie, does a fair job, but makes the Col sound nicer than he was. Read Elvis and the Col.

A lot was clips of movie and i was 16
He was making movies. HIs manager, Col Parker was a very controlling person. For one thing for Elvis to sing your song the Col would force you to hand over the rights and some of the credit. It was not Elvis, it was him.
