I just tested it. It's blowing my mind. It created an image generated in two seconds that is on par with Midjourney V6 and it animated the damn thing too. Who would believed that the same folks who'd sooner let you join their cult than leave their walled garden, have suddenly grown a heart for open-source AI! I get it, the purpose is to gain market share but right now they are in the lead.

Let's not get too excited when it comes to speed, since a lot of people haven't found their way to this yet, heck the majority probably don't know yet that it was released today. Secondly, if it turns out to work really well (as it seems to be), it's another cause for increased traffic, and that WILL affect performance.
Third....it's not rolled out in most countries yet, so when that happens, it will again affect performance.
Eh, the industry is moving so rapidly. In another week another company will have something better and so on and so forth. Even chat gpt 4 is becoming outdated and it was released last year. That's how quick things are moving.

I have a theory here. Companies like Meta will have an open source system because it appears transparent. The private system will be the agents or sub models.. It's almost like exercise supplements. There's a proprietary blend shown within the open ingredients. A false transparency. The finer details of what's really happening will be closed.

The reality is much more boring. Unlike openAi, their business is not AI, it's a good to have. Opening it is just another cost added in making their other apps better. They can't care less if they win or lose.
The other thing is: by open sourcing it, you get the whole world of enthusiasts improving it for free. Improvements can then be put back into their own model and use that on the behemoth data center they own (that most of the world can't even compete with).

“Open source” means more attention and therefore more access to those attracted… access for a REASON.
It is known in the body-building community that exercise supplements continue to have to be analyzed because they will include ingredients sometimes that are not mentioned for very specific reasons… but they will provide the ingredients of a PROPRIETARY (their own recipe) blend of ingredients which purport to produce the effects advertised - EVEN THOUGH it may be some unmentioned ingredient in some minor ratio added to the mix with actually is the true catalyst for the effect OR produces a feeling which can be associated with the idea of the advertised effects…

My initial tests of Llama-3-8b-Instruct feels like it outperforms Mixtral-8x7b-Instruct. Also about 2x faster than Mixtral at 1/3 the size.
Not likely as it barely beats lama 2 70b. But it 70b is comparable to sonnet and its coding is amazing so its better with rag. Just very poor context
LLAMA 3 must be amazing this is the most human mannerisms I've ever seen from Mark. Can't wait to see his upgrades after the training is done.

How ironic is that a company which was initially setup for developing open source AI and even has it in their name eventually went on to develop a closed source proprietary models and a company known for exploiting its users and their privacy went on to create open source models.
Just found out that MediaTek's Dimensity chips are teaming up with Meta's Llama 3 for on-device AI.
You make a great observation about Europe. Everything's always delayed in Europe because of the insane regulations. This is the reason why Europe will never lead an AI or innovative breakthroughs. Europe will always have to follow and and always be subservient to what others build.
Don't worry they will get these companies to pay billions in fine.
Except if the "breakthrough" wreaks havoc from within. That's literally why regulations are in place lol. May help ensure the form of the technology adopted does not override previous societal advances.

I've just run WizardLM-2-8x22b Q_4_S on my PC (75GB, half offloaded to 2x RTX3090) and it was superb. Almost as good or even as good as GPT-4
Now it seems LLaMA-3 70b is even better AND smaller? Wow, can't wait to try it out!
Please let us now know the comparison or make a post somewhere. Some of us cant test but are vested! Itd be appreciated 😅
@@WolfeByteLabs sure, so I've just tested the Llama-3 70b Q6 on my PC. 56/81 layers offloaded to GPUs. It's a bit slower than the WizardLM model at Q4 (about 2.2 tps compared to 2.7).
It wrote 126 lines of code (compared to 119). It had one repeating error where it added a space in one of the variable names.
BUT once I fixed it the implementation was even better than WizardLM. It did everything Wizard did and also added a score.
So I don't know which one is better. You could argue that an error-free code is better than a more complete code with errors. And the WizardLM is faster so... I'll stick with it.
Edit: Oh and by the way, WizardLM is uncensored once you give it a proper prompt. So that's a big plus.

The quality of the storytelling is the best I've ever experienced. You can really feel the difference.
It's so amazing, the 8B is better than GPT3.5 and it can run on an average GPU, and the 70B is at the performance level that GPT4 was at 12 months ago. And this is just the starting point, just wait till the community puts it through its paces and finds better ways to fine tune it.

its a baby gpt 3.5 lowkey, using it now. ill use in my workflow when i need a quick answer for something that isn't so intensive on computation.
Same, and for privacy. Then off to the 70B API for everything else. Much more cost effectively than using OpenAI. It's not worth the money until they release something more substantial

It is regulations. Why would they deliberately not serve their whole EU market the new product while it's available in like 180 countries. If it was only in the US then I would buy the idea that it was deliberately restricted to other countries because of company reasons e.g infrastructure etc. EU and some other countries require a lag so that new AI can be assessed before being allowed in the region.

Odd that the 400B model scores so poorly on math: Matt Bergman and his commenters found it very good there, including pretty advanced problem solving and even calculus.

Wondering how much compute power the LLAMA-400B model will require for something like 10 simultaneous user, in order to outperform current API speed on GPT4-turbo, which in all honesty is becoming a nuisance to work with.(due to the success thereof I imagine)... Like... Will it require AI specific hardware(not just huge GPU's) ?
GPUs are pretty much ideal for most forms of AI already, while of course there will be specialised hardware it won’t be supremely more efficient.

Just wait for gpt-5. OpenAI is still at least 1 year ahead of the game. Nobody was prepared when gpt-3 was launched, then 6 months later tried to launch something but nobody could do it and openAI released gpt-3.5. Now by the time some released AI agents for comparison, OpenAI had gpt-4, but everyone compared to gpt-3.5. I think for the last year or so, everyone was still trying to catch up with gpt-4 renditions, but openAI are soon gonna drop gpt-5 which will again leave everyone in the dust.

Before a bunch of humans were looking through our data now it's AI that's good at data analysis. The compromising act of using the internet, while the barter of data and privacy is done within the range of consent between individual - organisation and government agencies. If I want to avoid observation from any of the above mentioned three then it's impossible to exist in society in a harmonious way. The option is isolation and it's not viable choice 😢. Fuck the privacy

It doesn't. It uses repetition as a signal. They all do. Hence garbage in = garbage out. The best we can do is filter it as best as possible. But 99% is just noise, and the training algorithms do a decent enough job of joining the dots. If we had the ability to truly filter all that data (150 million books equivalent) these models would already have attained artificial super intelligence. The nosiness of the data is one of the reasons this hasn't happened yet.
