  • When Bernard Clark drove Nationwide's trusty 'On The Road' van past a railway signal in Surrey eight miles from the nearest British Rail, he simply couldn't resist investigating - even if his first thought was "not another railway story".
What he found was the miniature Ewhurst railway, running from the bottom end of the garden, past the rosebushes and vegetables, around the far side of the greenhouse and on to the garage.
Clip taken from Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, Tuesday 5 July, 1977.

"I'm a bit worried about falling off... Have you ever crashed it?"
    "Oh yes, yes, many times!"
    Absolute legend

Appeared that year, in 'The Spy Who Loved Me' (though Richard Kiel's 'Jaws' made it look like a sardine can).

Here in Bermuda one Vincent Astor, the American business mogul, had an estate. He has a tiny private railway built, a bit bigger than this one, which extended from his property on Ferry Reach to the railway station on the other side of the peninsula (not very far at all actually, it's easy to walk lol.) Unfortunately it's been allowed to rust away to a truly horrible state.

Is this a British version of the CBS's "On the road"? I believe it had been originated by Charles Curalt in 1967.

Hobbyists are a dying breed. But they invented so many things in their back gardens we still use today
