  • Arthur Lowe stars in this long-forgotten sitcom. Factory worker Clifford Basket (Ken Jones) has inherited the title of Earl of Clogborough, the remaining estate of which is a rundown mansion at Little Clogborough-in-the-Marsh and a faithful servant Bodkin played by Arthur Lowe. Clifford and his mother (Patricia Hayes) move in and start life anew as members of the landed gentry.
    This episode: "It's A Living" - The Earl has the right to appoint the local Vicar. Bodkin has his eye on the £2,000 a year that comes with the post, recommending his twin brother for the job. Arthur Lowe plays his character's own brother, just as he would do more famously in Dad's Army a few years later. Guest stars Roy Barraclough.
    First broadcast January 3rd 1972.

    My late Godmother was a great fan of this series that finished with the revelation " An Earl of Basket that was made in Hong Kong". Good to see an episode again after 50 years - some first rate actors making the best of a very "average" script. By the standards of 1970's ITV comedy, it's aged quite reasonably. ☺

      Though, unlike the BBC in Dad's Army, they didn't try to show Arthur Lowe acting against himself! That required both clever trick photography and good acting. ♥

      It was excellent !
      And the brother was a more interesting character & so well-played.
      Showed that A L was more capable as an actor than we had been shown.

    If a vicar is selected by the local lord, isn't that a rector?

    • @gavinwatson6195
      @gavinwatson6195 Před měsícem +5

      Not necessarily. The right of patronage or advowson, could be with the local gentry, a religious charity, or the local Bishop among others. The ancient difference between Vicar or Rector lay with the right to receive tithes. Now there is no practical difference between the two.
