Decades-Long Mystery: Missing Plane Found in Lake Champion

In 1971 a plane carrying five men suddenly disappeared on a snowy night after departing from Providence, Rhode Island to Burlington Vermont.

Experts believe they have finally found the wreckage of the Cessna 310, a light twin-engine aircraft in Lake Champion.

The initial searches for the 10-seat jet commander were unsuccessful, primarily because the lake had frozen over just four days after the plane went missing, likely concealing any signs of wreckage.

Since then 17 more searches have been conducted.
Garry Kozak, an expert in undersea search and survey, conducted a search using a remotely operated vehicle and found a jet at the bottom of the lake. The jet had a custom paint scheme matching that of the missing private plane.
On Monday, Kozak said, “With all those pieces of evidence, we’re 99% absolutely sure.”

He also hopes the discovery will give the families of the victim some closure.

Although the wreckage has been found, the cause of the disappearance remains a mystery.
