Houston McTear was unbeatable indoors; he had the fastest reaction and greatest start ever, I truly hope they make the movie "9 seconds" in his honor, RIP Houston!

Growing up in West Texas in the 50's + 60's with Bobby Morrow and Dave Sime....our Bone Daddy, the original Sportsphile, was weened on great sprinters....and he still rates Houston McTear as the 2nd fastest he ever saw live behind Bullet Bob Hayes....even ahead of Carl Lewis....who he saw win 4 golds at the '84 L A Games.

I probably have more Mctear in the 2000 hrs of sports, comedy and music that I have left to post.....and I never know what is on a video until I dust it off and transfer it from Sony BetaMax to digital....for this is my project for the rest of my life. Having posted 300 hrs (1300 videos) since last December....I figure somewhere around 2020 I will have completed my gift to the world....but probably have some other content already posted that you might enjoy.

Thank you for this video. I remember Houston tying the world record his junior year in a state high school track meet in Winter Park Florida like it was yesterday. Two of the judges stop watches had 8.9 but they rounded it out to 9.0. In football I think I remember he was averaging 13 yards a carry. I used to run track and swim from 8 year olds though high school and would always look at the weekly times for many years. Houston was unreal and his story breaks my heart. I would tell people about him and no one would believe it, so I used to keep his newspaper clippings and show the doubters and still have that sport illustrated magazine somewhere. So much talent that disappeared from people that used him to his personal demons . Such a tragedy. He would have been a Olympic gold medalist. I swam with Rowdy Gaines since we were 8 year olds and Jesse Vassallo in high school and they both went on to break many world records only to be boycotted in their prime years in the 1980 Olympics. So devastating for all of those hundreds of 1980 athlete's dreams being destroyed by politics. All the years of intense focus, setting goals and working hard. Doing everything they were supposed to do. Rowdy still came back a shadow of himself in 1984 and won three Olympic gold medals. He would have won five in 1980.

I remember going to see him run at the long Beach sports arena. I was about 11 or so with my dad and the guy standing in line in front of us was Wilt Chamberlin who also specifically came to see Houston run!!! He won the race but, the coolest part was nobody said a word to Wilt....everybody was silent because he was there with a friend and talking with his big bellowing voice. Nobody wanted to ruin it. But my dad stood right next to him looking at me like see how tall this guy is? My dad was 5'9" and only came to about the heart of Wilt. Probably about 47 years or so ago!
