    Thanks a million for your explanation on this issue. My elbow was always painful when I pitched, because I just can’t encourage my shoulder and elbow reaching the correct angle in the launch/cock position (My arm path was not driven by my torso and shoulder, made my elbow was bent to pitch forward). Thanks to training drills you provide, I have gradually fixed my problems in the last two catchball practices. Now I can get rid of my elbow pain and throw faster and harder way easier than before!

    this is an exceptionally well done video! I can't get over the thoroughness of the information presented here. it's easy to tell there's a wealth of experience in this presentation due to the fact that the information is never presented in the form of absolutes. My only critique would be to ask the presenter to speak just a little bit more slowly.

    Thanks Ben ! Btw: You may still have a performance future--IF you fix your leg action. You have good foot action, but you are losing a TON of mobility with all that complicated leg-windup business. I recommend copying Gerrit Cole's leg action. It will fit in great with all the rest of what you got going. The deeper leg-hinge and free-er hips will both improve your hip-twist, your separation, AND give you more downhill momentum. Lookin fwd to seeing you hit 100--Cheers !

    @kevinkondo4284 Před rokem

    Your footage of Max and his so-called “late” arm action is actually on time for the type of overall delivery he possesses. It is obvious to me that Max has what I call a low three quarter, “Reverse C” delivery. That is, the torque and “whip” of his delivery is generated by the lateral to posterior movement of his internal obliques and rechts abdominals. In other words, he unwinds his torso first, and then stops the movement upon full weight acceptance of his front foot by hinging at his waist and literally sucks his mid-body back as his chest and head counter balance the abrupt halt of his initial inertial momentum. You can see that he literally appears to “bow” in a linear fashion toward the plate at release. This is quite contrasted with three other types of delivery. The others being a conventional overhand or high three quarter arm slot (elbow at or above shoulder at the moment of what you are referring in your video as the external/internal/external movement of the hand and upper arm). Another being submarine, and a third being true side arm (which, in my opinion, is just submarine standing upright).
    In the conventional delivery, I agree totally with your discussion on timing. I believe that being late in a conventional delivery can lead to shoulder injury at the moment the greatest amount of torque is placed on the shoulder joint, due to impingement, or due to a shortened run out area during follow through. The former is evident by the elbow elevation being below the shoulder elevation as the shoulders turn toward the plate, and the latter being evidenced by a truncated follow through of the arm after release (anywhere from under the armpit to the belt area - or worse, the arm ends up coming to an abrupt stop almost pointing to the plate). You do a great job demonstrating the ideal transition timing for “arm action” as when the elbow is at or higher than the shoulder at the moment the shoulders turn toward the plate. You explain that position seems to create a “glide” for the shoulder joint to rotate within the “socket.”
    Putting aside that there is technically no socket at the shoulder joint, I think the better way to describe what is going on here is: when the elbow is at least at 90 degrees and shoulder height at the upper torso turn, the entire arm apparatus (i.e., the ball, hand, forearm muscles, elbow joint ligaments and tendons, biceps muscles and rotator cuff muscles) can be “locked together” momentarily, during the moment the considerably stronger chest muscles take over the rotational responsibility of transferring the momentum and torque curve of the delivery. This is the critical moment when torsional acceleration of the upper torso occurs and, anchored by those large pectoral muscles, it is in itself a form of “glide” for this arm “apparatus” (as in the “glide” of the lower legs earlier in the delivery) that has the potential to preserve the energy that was generated initially by the lower body and torque of the hips. This is the moment separation of lower and upper body becomes important. If the chest and abdominal muscles are engaged properly, and the arm is held in this 90 degree unison, if only for a moment in time, the shoulder joint, elbow joint, and biceps tendon, should be protected at the critical moment of transitional torque. Thereafter, the fingers can begin to apply pressure to the top of the baseball and the elbow can extend the forearm to the target. A perfect delivery, with the fingers on top of and behind the baseball, and an ideal follow through with the hand and arm ending up just outside of the frontside knee/thigh, to provide proper run out of the arm momentum and prevent the scapular (rhombus) muscles from having to abruptly stop that momentum anf possibly place too much strain on the rotator cuff muscle anchor points at the front of the shoulder joint.
    Contrast these conventional delivery mechanics with Max’s lower and quite different delivery and you will see that Max does not use his chest muscles at this critical moment of delivery, or in quite the same manner. This is evidenced by the simple fact that Max’s fingers are either under the ball or on the arm side of the baseball at release. In Max’s case, the chest muscles are contracted in more of a linear fashion (between the plate and his body), as part of the recoiling of the entire arm during release - more akin to the cracking of a whip, rather than the flipping of a catapult or trebuchet.
    In that case, it is not surprising that Max can maintain a lower arm slot and later arm action because the critical moment (for greatest injury) for the shoulder joint comes later in time during his delivery and after his shoulder joint angle has changed to accommodate for the release of that energy in a more efficient and effortless manner (i.e., when the torso has already nearly rotated and oriented toward the plate, and his hand ends up literally releasing the ball in front of his face in a linear manner.
    If you would like to see a pitcher with a truly late arm action, yet, being successful with a “conventional” delivery, find some video of Sid Fernandez (1980s pitcher for the Mets). He is truly an anomaly in my opinion. He hid the ball from the batter behind his body very well, which required him to be vary late, yet he had an almost overhand release and did not appear to have been plagued by shoulder issues. He did accommodate for this late arm action, thereby delaying release of the baseball, by striding out so farm and dropping his body so low to the ground, that his back knee frequently dragged on the ground. The fact that he threw gas from this position is a testament to the fact that this delivery style can work - but I maintain that it must be analyzed in detail before teaching it to young pitchers.

      Do you teach mechanics. I have a 16 year old that needs a good eye. He’s talented but mechanics need help. He’s stuck between trying to throw over the top (conventional) and 3/4ths low arm slot. He tends to be supinated at release and brings the ball back with elbow above the shoulder. He use to be fine with no issues until he tried muscling the ball. He works hard. He wants to be a pitcher but is super frustrated. We don’t have much money to pay for these lessons but will pay something reasonable. He worked with a kinesiologist but cost was absorbent. Some that can help don’t because they want the spotlight on their child but my son has it. 6’3 without shoes and 6’7 wingspan. Still growing super coachable and just a good kid. Not a bad bond in his body. Could you just take a look at him?
      Thanks.

      There are certainly some athletes who are naturally able to get into positions that take years for other pitchers to train themselves into, but at the end of the day perfect mechanics do not really exist.
