  • My issue with a "late" arm isn't as much that it's an injury risk (although it arguably is), but that it's a potential performance inhibitor.
    An "on time" arm is one between 45-90 degrees of ER when the front foot accepts load. This should be paired with retraction as well.
    Note: there is such a thing as an early arm, although this is less common.
    Too late = the arm isn't in a position to accept layback (scap tilted posteriorly to avoid impingement zone)
    Too early = you lose some of the elastic potential in the arm (like pausing before a jump).
    Here's three drills to try if you want to fix your late arm action.

    Didn’t even realize my arm action was late until I saw the thumbnail and thought “hey that looks a lot like my arm action” I was super skeptical because I felt like pulling back into a more stretched arm action only created command problems and a slower more whip like arm was still good kinetic chain movement, now I’ve done the drills and am throwing harder and more accurately by letting my arm naturally start later and fall into place better, I swear your words are gold and I’ve never seen you wrong, would love to hear your thoughts on creating a sidearm delivery through trunk angle instead of arm angle

      That's great to hear! And we're planning to record soon. Keep an eye out!

    Really helpful! Wish I caught this in high school, I had a lot of shoulder pain towards the end and didn’t realize until I just started throwing again to prepare my arm for my 5 year old son that I am very late with my arm.
    I’m excited to try these drills to work on getting the mechanics better and hopefully avoid injury doing long toss with him growing up.
    I’ll make sure to do lessons with him to help with his mechanics also.

    This is extremely helpful especially coming off a shoulder injury. It felt like my normal motion but my arm was basically at a 90 degree angle when releasing and pushing the ball. Thanks

    This is something I’m still working on, I found that it had a lot to do with my lower half. I was a big drop and drive guy, but I’ve been doing a Fernando Rodney type slide step and it’s been helping me stay closed, which I find really odd

    Great stuff. My 17 year-old son is a RHP. Maxes out around 90. Sometimes he’s late and pushes the ball, costing velo. How many days per week would you recommend these drills, and how many reps per drill? Are there any other vids that address late arm and where arm should be at foot strike?

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 3 měsíci

      These can be done when warming up and beginning a throwing session. No set amount of days per week. Here are some more videos we've made!

      Awesome. Thanks so much. So a good pre-throw thought would be: When arm arm is up, that’s when the front side begins to rotate toward the target

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 3 měsíci

      Sure, but don't get too caught up in hitting specific checkpoints in the delivery.

    Late arm misses tend to be high and in, early arm misses tend to be down and away. Correct me if I’m wrong

    During the ten toes drill what if your arm physically can’t get fully up does that mean mobility sucks?

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 11 měsíci

      Could be. It's more of an issue if it can't get in line with your torso angle

    what mobility drills would help if you dont have the ability to get your arm up and back

  • @Thundderz
    @Thundderz Před 22 dny

    during the exercises, if you are doing it with a partner, do you still aim and try to be precise or it's better to just throw into a net ??

    • @treadathletics
      @treadathletics  Před 22 dny

      Start with plyos into a net. Eventually, you can work it into catch play

    Could rounded shoulders cause a late arm action?

    • @Metsbat14
      @Metsbat14 Před rokem +1

      I think it probably could. Rounded shoulders are caused by tight pecs pulling the arms into internal rotation. That would cause an impingement in the shoulder when you try to get into those deeper scap retracted positions. I don't think you would actually have enough "room" in the joint to get into enough external rotation in that case.
