    As much as Newcastle fans love the entertainer type of player we’ve always had a huge amount of respect for players who graft and work hard for the team. Joelinton epitomises that hard working mentality both on and off the field. Howe spotted something in Big Joe but the amount of work he put in behind the scenes to improve his fitness, physicality and understanding of the new role has to be commended. He deserves all of the plaudits he’s receiving and I’m so pleased he’s made it into the Brazil squad too.
    Great video Jim, we know you love Joelinton nearly as much as we do.

      Not gonna sit here and claim I knew he was a destroyer centre mid from the start but I do think he was unfairly scapegoated, used to baffle me when fans would say he was lazy. Very easy to watch a lad play in an isolated striker role with the other nine outfield players miles away camped out their own box and suggest he should do more running. Joe has always covered his fair share of yards even when he wasn't playing particularly well.

    It's worth pointing out that on the Newcastle Online forum, Joelinton was not only voted Player of the Season in 21/22, but also again in 22/23 after full, brilliant, seasons from Guimaraes, Botman, Isak, Trippier, Almiron, Willock, Wilson etc.
    He was absolutely colossal last season and epitomises our rise from relegation battlers to Champions League qualifiers.

    In his interview for NUFC Eddie Howe did a presentation on how he’d analysed Joelinton and looked to play him in midfield instead of attack. The Norwich game was basically Eddie saying to Big Joe “y’know that plan we had about playing you in midfield? Well, we’re bringing it forward a couple of weeks!”

    All of us Toon fans are guilty of giving up on him in that first coupe of seasons. It was never his fault, he was just part of a seriously depressing period in our history and his performance reflected that.
    But man do we all owe him an apology. He could have walked away, resenting is all and looking back at his time at Newcastle as a nightmare. But he didn't, he rook on his new role, he worked hard and he earned the love of the fans, becoming one of our most important players at the same time. I'm so happy he did, and I hope he chooses to stay with us for many years to come. It's always nice to see a success story, and his is a big one.

    Sometimes last season he could just move through congested space in midfield like nobody was there, whether that was just forcing the ball through or having excellent close control. This season he's in a new position and with different expectations of what he will be doing game by game but as just a pure ball-carrying disruptor, he's top-class.

      @dddgtsd Před 7 měsíci +2

      agreed, never understood fans who called him lazy - classic fans who have never played the game, the bloke had to close down four defenders off the ball most weeks and then deal with long balls with no one around, impossible job (well I say impossible, Rondon did pretty well but it definitely takes a special sort of hold up striker to do that job which Joe isn't).

  • @ImmuneGEORGE
    @ImmuneGEORGE Před 7 měsíci +2

    He's physically incredible, great tackler, good in the air, excellent at running with the ball, and even managed 6 league goals last season. He's one of the most complete midfielders in the PL, reminds me so much of Mousa Dembele for Tottenham . WHAT. A. PLAYER.

    • @dddgtsd
      @dddgtsd Před 7 měsíci

      I love Joe (might be one of my favourites of all time due to his redemption arc) but Dembele was far more technically gifted, his close control, weight of pass were miles ahead of Joelinton. They have their similarities but I think Joe's first touch and close control aren't his best attributes, better at running into space with the ball on the counter and using his physical attributes.

    • @ImmuneGEORGE
      @ImmuneGEORGE Před 7 měsíci

      @@dddgtsd I didn't say they were identiical!
      It's mainly because Dembele was a striker-turned-midfielder who was very strong and excellent running with the ball., but he had some limitations with his vision/creativity and goalscoring like Joelinton. I just think they both dominate games with their physicality and are very well rounded.
      I agree Joelinton isn't on the same technical level as Dembele was - he was insane. But Joelinton's first touch isn't too bad, he was pretty good at taking down Schar's long-balls from the left wing - see his goal vs Spurs!

    • @dddgtsd
      @dddgtsd Před 7 měsíci

      @@ImmuneGEORGE I don't remember Dembele ever playing up top, even at AZ he was a number ten at best. I'd also argue his creativity and vision were two of his best things along with his touch. He was strong but not in the same way Joelinton is, Joe is a bit more all action, bullying players where as Dembele was strong on the ball, used his body well and it almost looked effortless.
      Yeah that touch from Joe was class and he's Brazilian so you know he has it but in the middle of the park he sometimes needs a few touches to tame it, compared to someone like Bruno for example. But I get your point, there are some similarities but probably not enough for me to compare the two like that.

    • @ImmuneGEORGE
      @ImmuneGEORGE Před 7 měsíci

      @@dddgtsd Ah, I was under the impression he was a striker in his early years in Holland, but I must be mistaken.
      I disagree with Dembele's creativity though. He was technically excellent but didn't create many chances for his teams. He only got 15 assists in 243 PL apps which is very poor. He's similar to Joelinton in that regard - they both can run with the ball and create some chances that way, but they're definitely don't have an eye for a pass to be considered playmakers.

    • @dddgtsd
      @dddgtsd Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@ImmuneGEORGE fair point, in terms of numbers you're right he didn't deliver many goals and assists but from memory he was creative in a different way, take a man on in his own half and kick start an attack, pass before the pass sort of stuff which I still class as creative. But I'll give you that, he didn't put up many impressive numbers like Joelinton and both players show that G/A don't always tell the full story for a midfielder. I'd say Dembele did have an eye for a pass though but perhaps was more known for his ball carrying. Joelinton does a similar job but his is more bull in a china shop, full throttle, barging through people whereas Dembele was a bit more elegant lol.

    IMO... also to add to why the reception to Bruce's appointment was so lukewarm... that Ashley essentially pushed Rafa Benitez out after Rafa kept us for two seasons on a shoestring budget after getting us out of the Championship.
    As I understood it... after being told for months that money was limited, Joelinton was put to Rafa (he had final say on transfers). Rafa wanted Salomon Rondon permanently and to put that money elsewhere. Neither side budged, Rafa left when his contract was up.
    Bruce saw what the hierarchy saw in Joelinton (and allegedly was less willing to put his foot down), so the move got done.
    I'd like to think however that if Rafa had Joelinton he too would have seen what Howe (and Julian Nagelsmann) saw and been able to get the best out of him...

I remember going to the away FA Cup game at West Brom, seeing us go from 3-0 up to 3-2 up in the second half and watching him walk around the pitch with no energy or urgency. I felt so negatively towards him at that time. Now though, he is completely transformed and one of our best players, and one of the best midefielders in the league. • @dddgtsd

      I have to defend Joe here, we were all disappointed with his end product and we were a bit confused with what his position was but I genuinely never watched a game where he didn't give his all. You have to understand he was playing up top in a 8-1-1 formation most weeks in which he was having to close down a whole back four on his own and chasing lost causes all game. The poor bloke was knackered most weeks, I used to check the distance covered every week because people would call him lazy but you'd be surprised, even before his upturn in form he was covering the yards.
      He frustrated me but some of the fans scapegoated him massively (not suggesting you did), in many games under Bruce he was by no means the worst player but he was always the first one people begin to aim their stick at. He was early 20s, didn't speak a word of English and his manager was Steve Bruce - got to feel for the lad during that time lol.

    He's such an integral player for newcastle and an absolute cult hero in Newcastle now.
    He took it upon himself to hire personal trainers and digital analysts to improve his game under Steve Bruce as he could see the lack of coaching and fitness levels was leaving him behind.
    He has worked so hard and never ever gave up, even in the tough years, to get to where he is now.
    It's been a rough start for newcastles new look midfield this season and he has played every game whilst carrying an injury (again showing his commitment to the club) it's time for Eddie to give him a small break or hopefully the international break will have allowed him to recuperate.
    He does his best work when he dovetails along the left hand side with a winger. Or himself as a left winger.
    He and Joe willock have a brilliant understanding together on that left hand side where possible.
    I so hope he can maintain fitness in time for the champs league, because he deserves every success and to show the world how good he can actually be in midfield. He is powerful, hard working beyond belief, fast, actually a good passer of the ball and very good with his decision making. His only downfall is composure when he gets in the box.
    But his first touch and close control is better than people expect.
    Can't wait to see him perform at his best against the champs league elite.

    A joy to see. Initially baffling....mainly as he was signed directly after Benitez left...because Benitez was not funded well at all. And then,..suddenly 40m quid for an unknown in England. And,.....didnt start well. The overall change in them all, into excelling, is best symbolized by Joelinton

    Not sure I've ever been more angry at a player than Ciaran Clark when he got sent off in that game against Norwich. Little did I know what it all meant. Thank you Ciaran.

    Absolute rollercoaster of a season that 21/22 campaign. The Howe call to move him into midfield was so ballsy and not many people were convinced at the time, myself included. Didn't feel like the game to experiment with what was at stake. Boy were we wrong. Masterstroke of a decision.

      To be fair, when played on the right wing under Bruce he showed glimpses of that player, he was often helping out the centre mids and doing more defending than attacking. But yeah it was a bit of a shock to see him genuinely deployed as CM.

    Stuck up for him since day 1. Blind man could see he wasn’t a number 9. I never saw him as a midfield general I must admit. I’m be devastated if we sold him for DOUBLE what we paid now.

    excellent video, maybe it is not relevant, your video would have been too long but his early background as a kid would also be worth a look at too, from the other side of the tracks. His biggest quality is his humble attitude, I understand that he is very approachable especially with kids, recently he invited some fans from Scandinavia to his house, very easy going.
    Thanks.

    gonna be honest i was a joelinton truther, you could see signs of what he was capable of but his confidence was just obliterated by an uninspired bruce team, even before the takeover in the 21/22 season i'd argue he was one of our best players, but it was hard to see because the overall team performances were so poor, howe has done wonders with him though, and he's probably the newcastle player i'd want to stay the most

    Really enjoyed this James, looking forward to more like it on other players if/when possible.
    Although I may be slightly (definitely) biased in my picks as two are ex nufc and two are current I think Mitro and Toney are decent shouts from how they were for us to what they've done since leaving (maybe not enough chances is a factor in Toney) - but then also Miggy & Schar especially based on last season from how they were previously viewed.

    It's worth noting that he did have some games out on the wing in which he spent most the game defending (due to his natural work rate and Bruce's defensive set up) and was actually one of our better players, I remember Jones taking over after Bruce fwent and for some reason he dropped Joelinton, almost as if he wanted to make a big statement. I stand by the fact Joelinton was one of our better performers even though it wasn't hard with the way we were playing in Bruce's final months (not saying he had completely shook the meme status but he was unfairly scapegoated). But yes the Norwich game was the true origin story where he was properly in the middle of the park doing a similar job to what he does now.
